To be really angry on behalf of teachers

Jessicabrassica · 29/08/2020 07:51

I know mumsnet loves a bit of teacher bashing.
I'm really angry that once again the Department for Education has put out guidance for schools in a Friday night before a long weekend with some schools having already started and others back next week.
I cannot imagine how many iterations of risk assessments have already been completed to make schools as safe as possible given the constraints of staff numbers, building size and requirements to get every child back in school.
They are getting enough PPE to tick the box that it's been issued to all schools but not enough to be useful.
Teachers mostly haven't stopped working since the pandemic began. They have continued to teach, to support vulnerable learners, provided meals and good parcels out of school funds in lieu of FSM, they remained open through school holidays for key worker provision.
I really feel that they have been well and truly fucked over, left massively vulnerable and will be left to carry the can for community outbreaks.

I'm a parent and work for the NHS if it's if any consequence.

We should start clapping for teachers every Thursday. Looks like they are next in the firing line after the NHS staff.

Jimtimjimtim · 29/08/2020 12:40

‘any of us.
But I have taught a full timetable of lessons online, in line with the specifications, using Teams. I have also done assessments and written reports. So I have done the job I am paid to do and so I do not have to get back to it’

In a state school?? Which one, I’ll move my kids ASAP to your school

@Jimtimjimtim I teach in a state school and I taught a full timetable on Teams, hosted 2 parents evenings and wrote reports.

No dont - we hate all that faux clapping
Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2020 12:43

jupp have you added real world?

Because I live in Narnia.

CallmeAngelina · 29/08/2020 12:44

@Jimtimjimtim

'Moaning' 'crack on' 'snowflakes' 'whining' 'get a grip'.

Well if it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck...

How about some self reflection and wondering why teachers have gone from being such a respected profession to not in 6 months.

I don't give a flying fuck what you think of me or my profession. Bottom line is, that you need me more than I need you. I can walk out tomorrow if I choose to. Fortunately for the children in my care (and their generally lovely parents who are sensible and appreciative of what we have provided for them and the community over the last 6 months) that would then be left without a teacher, I have a bit more professionalism than that.

I'd love some actual evidence for this assertion.

Jimtimjimtim · 29/08/2020 12:45

Primary school teachers spend a fair amount. I am just going to point secondary students towards Amazon from now on.’

Good you should be. Anything that adds pressure on the Tories to stop slashing school budgets is more than welcome.
But that’s got nothing to do with how let down many, many parents feel after 5 months of their schools and teachers providing the minimum education possible while complaining and getting full pay.

CallmeAngelina · 29/08/2020 12:45

Please don't.

Sorry? This isn’t the claim here on MN that everyone suddenly hates teachers??

U4T invasion - lol

Out of interest, IS it a state school? There are none in our entire county doing this.

BoggledBudgie · 29/08/2020 12:50

No sympathy for them whatsoever. There are so many other people working that have no PPE, that never stopped working during the pandemic. Teachers just love to sodding moan about how hard they’ve got it, except they really don’t.

CallmeAngelina · 29/08/2020 12:50

Haven't had any Daffodil for a while, have we?

Scroll on by, I think.

Come on Jimtim. There are loads more hackneyed cliches you could roll out.

I tagged you earlier @Jimtimjimtim. I teach in a state school and taught a live full timetable on Teams, hosted 2 parents evenings and write end of year reports.

You live in the wrong county then as my school wasn’t the only secondary doing this where I live.
Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2020 12:53

MN is not a national survey.

I don't think everyone hates teachers. I think here are a vocal mob on MN who see a teacher headed OP and venomously land upon it, shouting down any agreement with the OP and using the opportunity to express frankly unpleasant sentiments about a whole professions. I think most right minded people don't think like this about any profession, much less clearly enjoy the thrill of the hunt. The fact hat many of these posters keep name changing often suggests there are more of them than there are.

many posters are reluctant to defend teachers and remain the silent majority because they avoid AIBU and the coronavirus board because of how deeply deeply unpleasant they have become. MNHQ seems OK with that.

justaweeone · 29/08/2020 12:53

Total agree with you OP
It is not just teachers that have been working throughout it's SUPPORT STAFF AS WELL
I'm a careers advisor for a high school and I am employed term time only. But due to the circumstances that we are in I have been working remotely during the holidays. At present ( today) I am in email contact with 2 year 11 students and their parents trying to sort out their next steps. This is because I care about my students!
On another note our Senior Leadership Team look exhausted and at the end of their tether!

SideEyeing · 29/08/2020 12:54

@motherrunner My state secondary provided a full timetable online then drove paper lessons to kids without online access.

SideEyeing · 29/08/2020 12:54

(so I agree with you is what I'm saying!)

motherrunner · 29/08/2020 12:55

@SideEyeing Our comments will be ignored though as they don’t for the ‘lazy teacher’ narrative.

You are living in the wrong county - parts of South West London and Surrey were in an arms race to see who could do the most

Moaning', 'crack on', 'snowflakes', 'whining', 'get a grip', 'paid with our money', 'don't live in the real world', 'teachers just love to sodding moan',

Updated for you (hope you get 4g in Narnia Piggy).

Disclaimer: this list is not comprehensive, and I am not a teacher.
