So I’m just going to list a few things here so you get a better idea:

  • retail showroom manager
  • central London
  • selling luxury products (as in if you have to as how much things are you can’t afford it)
  • small team so busy busy busy
  • driving sales
  • loads of admin
  • displays/new product launches
  • small company so you got to cover others if they are on holiday
  • general showroom running crap
  • you need great interpersonal skills
  • full time 40hrs/week

How much do you think this person should be earning ?

It's due for review, and £30k is almost certainly massively underpaid for this role. Definitely ask for a significant increase. If you're selling the kind of thing I think you are, one substantial sale can be equivalent to your annual salary.

IvyEf · 28/08/2020 23:01

Sorry one more post - if you think you can get £38k, why haven't you quit your job for another paying that?

Rhayader · 28/08/2020 23:01

The thing is, like any job, they will pay you slightly less than you can get elsewhere. It sounds like a very specialist job where there might not be many competitors who will pay for your niche expertise.

That said, it can’t hurt to ask for a pay rise as long as you are justifying it. Maybe you’ve taken on a lot more recently or the market has moved and you are quite underpaid compared to what you could get elsewhere. The main “gotcha” is don’t give them an excuse to say no when you ask.. so don’t say “I know it’s tough because of covid” or “I know it’s not the normal time for pay review” just ask for it, justify it, and leave some silence!

Bayleaf25 · 28/08/2020 23:02

I’m clearly out of touch but doesn’t sound overly niche/skilled so £25-35k . Not sure I’ve got a lot to go on though..

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 28/08/2020 23:02

@Londoner90

I agree, it was probably pointless to start this thread but I have been researching, thinking and thought why not ask on Mumsnet... Well I’ll keep everything crossed for next week and see what they say.
Good luck. It's tricky, isn't it. I really don't think £35-38k would be an unreasonable ask at the moment. In more normal times I think I'd go for more, but things are so uncertain
Londoner90 · 28/08/2020 23:02

Haha thanks @IvyEf... you want me to recommend you for the job ?!

Review was scheduled by the director for this specific date... it’s her business I guess she can call the shots.

25k plus sales bonuses I would say. Max 40k ote ?

IvyEf · 28/08/2020 23:06

I'm ok thanks op (v lucky myself to currently have a job!). Good luck. It's frustrating when you think you're worth more but especially so when you think you should get £8k and they're thinking inflation.

Thenneverendingstorohree · 28/08/2020 23:07

35-40k

Londoner90 · 28/08/2020 23:10

@IvyEf oooohhh great, you can tell exactly what they are thinking. WWWOoOooWWW!

Can you help us with the lotto numbers too please?! 🤣😂😂🤣

WaxOnFeckOff · 28/08/2020 23:14

@Londoner90

My salary is at 30k at the moment. I think I should be getting 35-38k... my degree is design related and you could probably have someone who isn’t qualified and let them learn on the job but I think you would struggle for a quite while... I appreciate the current situation affects jobs but in all honesty we barely had a scratch on our sales since Covid ... it really hasn’t affected us much ( not being big headed, I’m super lucky and greatful that I have a job like this) My salary is due to be reviewed, Covid or no Covid , I think it’s worth to have the chat... worst case they tell me I can’t have a raise 🤷🏻‍♀️
I thought you were going to be looking for £70k or something.

Whilst I think what you are looking for is a high salary (for ex DH has 2 degrees but does a job in the NHS he loves and earns £22kish near the top of his scale) I think what you are looking for seems reasonable for London, high class type role.

Go for it, as we say here, "shy bairns get nay sweeties".

Alconleigh · 28/08/2020 23:21

I'm not sure how much we can help OP. It seems like a low salary to me for someone with experience in London, but my industry is consulting...clearly arty stuff is badly paid, which is hardly new news.

simba65 · 28/08/2020 23:27

23k with commission?

jorgeous · 28/08/2020 23:28

Minimum 40k plus commission

TheFluffyHippo · 28/08/2020 23:29

The manager of the store where I work earns £30k. Tiny high street store, outside of London. I’m surprised you’re on £30k in central London (unless you’re on commission- I missed it if you said that).

There’s certainly no harm in asking for a rise but bear in mind the company may not be in a position to grant it what with the current circumstances. Good luck!

jorgeous · 28/08/2020 23:35

Sorry one more post - if you think you can get £38k, why haven't you quit your job for another paying that?

eh, how the hell did you leap to this?

IvyEf · 28/08/2020 23:52

OP - my post was meant with kindness . Plenty of people aren't even seeing inflationary rises; if your boss IS, this is GOOD. I have no idea what your boss is thinking of course - but you've asked for opinions and we've given them. Mine is - to get a rise in line with inflation right now (circa £500) would make you lucky indeed . To get one of 28 per cent would make you very very very very very lucky. Very. I work in a field similarly so far unaffected by Covid so I have a benchmark. Let us know how you get on.

AugieMarch · 29/08/2020 00:02

I think you need to layout why you think your are worth more now than you were when you accepted the role for your current salary. Have you exceeded sales expectations, built important client relationships, implemented new ideas that have benefited the business, received praise from management for your staff management skills? Laying out why you deserve the pay rise is probably more important than the exact figure you’re asking for. Most people either get inflationary pay rises (at best), pay rise due to promotion (which it doesn’t sound like this would be) or pay rise due to performance. If you can show how you’ve exceeded performance expectations and can show evidence of why £38k would be a reasonable salary for the role then you should ask for that.

Inkpaperstars · 29/08/2020 00:06

Definitely worth the chat, don't ask don't get. I am sure noughties issues of Cosmo always used to have loads of articles abiut asking for a pay rise!

BoomBoomsCousin · 29/08/2020 00:15

YABabitU to ask about salary range for a mysterious niche position on a general forum when you can’t give more detail! But YANBU to ask for the raise you think you should get. If you get turned down it’s normally a good idea to ask how your boss thinks you might be able to get to that sort of salary. Good luck! Flowers

Siepie · 29/08/2020 00:21

I’m slightly surprised that something like that isn’t commission-based.

Unless the company has suggested otherwise, I agree with @IvyEf that they’re unlikely to be thinking of anything more than inflation/COL.

No I can’t give you the lottery numbers Hmm, it’s just very unusual to suddenly get a 20-30% pay rise without a promotion.

MsEllany · 29/08/2020 00:22

I think you're going to need to have something solid like industry standards for this type of work if you want an £8k payrise. Even if that's just that Sandra who works in similar role elsewhere without degree is on that.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 29/08/2020 00:24

OP I have a good idea what you're talking about, but my idea of salary is probably a few years out. It's difficult isn't it. I worked somewhere like this and it's was so specialist that it was very difficult to compare. I don't think you'll get the answers you need here tbh.

If you have a good idea what the OP is talking about perhaps you could share it, because nobody else can make any sense of it.

Well, no. Because OP would have shared if she wanted to

If you don't have an idea, then you can't really comment tbh

Kat92 · 29/08/2020 08:45

If your boss is the one who has organised to have a salary review, then they are obviously open to increasing your salary.
I have no idea what you should be earning, but there is no harm in asking for more.
