AIBU to think that £649 is too much to spend on an online mattress?

DH has found a Nectar mattress online- looks like a good deal; 365 day trial, lifetime warranty, free pillows, mattress protector, sheets and a duvet but it's £649!!
I suffer with joint pain so happy to go for higher quality, but this seems like a lot of money- is a Nectar mattress worth it?

For the right mattress then that price is worth it but as someone that has bad joints (RA) I wouldn’t risk buying one I hadn’t tried as if you are anything like me then 1 night sleep in a bad mattress can leave pain for days.
I would recommend the cashmere mattress from benson for beds, someone on a RA fb group recommenced it to me and it is the best money spent.

Not tried the mattress you are looking at but I just looked it up and a foam mattress I used to have was awful for me personally.

TheTrollFairy · 28/08/2020 21:23

Benson for beds advert was just on, they have 20% off at the moment

Cuddling57 · 28/08/2020 21:24

I've spent ages looking into all three. If I remember right the Necter isn't made in the UK so that put me off. Went for the Emma one in the end. During the second night I was nearly in tears with how much it hurt my back so it's going back. Well I've requested a return but haven't heard back from them which seems to be a common theme if you look on their Facebook page.

Cuddling57 · 28/08/2020 21:24

Just to add if I'd tried the Emma mattress in a shop I may have bought it because it seems lovely for five minutes, but not the whole night.

HelloDoris · 28/08/2020 21:29

We bought the "Premier Inn" Hypnos mattress so so so comfortable, I can't get on with memory foam mattresses as they are so bad for my back. Go try out some first before you purchase.

Tappering · 28/08/2020 21:29

We bought an Eve premium a couple of years ago for similar money. Got ours at half price because it was one that had been returned under the 100 nights guarantee. Eve professionally clean it and then offer it for sale at a reduced price. Was totally worth it as it's the most comfortable mattress we've had - I have a bad back and we'd tried all sorts.

Tappering · 28/08/2020 21:31

Ours was the hybrid BTW. I've tried full memory foam and it's too much for me, but the foam and spring combo works really well.

Miljea · 28/08/2020 21:33

We bought an Emma on a 3 month trial.

We hated it! We sank down into it, moulded into it- great til you want to move! You have to fight your way up and out of the dents you've made! Hot and sticky.

We bought from Dreams, and they were great in advising us, and helping us change to one we like far more (a Dreams home- brand).

TraverseLaRue · 28/08/2020 21:40

DO IT.

I've always suffered with back pain and have had ridiculously expensive expensive mattresses. The latest one died at the beginning of lockdown so I bought a Nectar as an expensive temporary solution and was highly doubtful about it. Oh. My. Good. Grief. My back has never been better and I have never slept better. I swear they aren't paying me to write this - it was worth every penny and then some.

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 28/08/2020 21:42

I spent £1600 on a mattress so that doesn’t seem too bad.

Best investment ever. I love it.

Chickychickydodah · 28/08/2020 21:43

Have a look at carpet right, they got some brilliant mattresses and reasonable too, they have a 5 year guarantee.

BibBobb · 28/08/2020 21:54

argh mixed replies! but thanks for the advice. Good point about whether the company will still be going in 365 days.
It just feels like a lot of money but if you get what you pay for then I could justify such a big spend, I just don't want to be disappointed and make the wrong choice. We're trying to save for a house deposit so it will come out of our savings for that, which is making it even harder to part with the money! Our current mattress was cheap, is 6 yrs old and the springs poke into my back... it's not pleasant.
Love the advice about spending as much as you can afford on shoes and mattresses, you really do spend all your life in or on them!

DH and I love our Ikea Hovag mattress, I think it was £190. We needed a new mattress but were also saving for a deposit so didn't want to spend loads. We're thrilled with it, it's brilliant.

TheCanyon · 28/08/2020 22:11

I wouldn't spend a single penny on an online mattress at the moment. You need to feel it, a money back return guarantee is brilliant but as others said, where will the company be in 10, 30, 100 mastermind 365 days.

We bought a mattress online, I quite liked it when I was a bit chunky through pregnancy Last two weeks of pregnancy have fucking hated it since, dh is twice my weight so I dunno if that makes a difference but the springs dig into my ribs, even with at least 5 inch memory foam on top.

Try, try and try some more

copperoliver · 28/08/2020 22:18

Mine was a £1000 in the sale. I think you should always spend good money on a bed and your shoes. If you are not in one your in the other. X

MiniMum97 · 28/08/2020 22:19

I don't think that's a lot for a good mattress. I paid about a grand for mine and it's amazing. I personally wouldn't buy a mattress without trying it though even with free returns as that will be a massive faff. Also wouldn't buy memory foam as it's too hot and doused in flame retardants which are toxic and bioaccumulate. Foam is very flammable.

Annabanana1234 · 28/08/2020 22:35

Our nectar mattress arrived a few weeks ago and we love it. I bought the mattress protector too and it came with two pillows.

It came late due to a problem with their manufacturing machine which was a pain in the neck but they refunded the mattress protector cost so I guess I can’t complain. Their communication was ok but I had to chase them to make sure I was still getting it on the second date that they’d promised. TNT delivered and offered to take it to my room but I just got them to leave it at the door.

It’s soooo comfy! My partner has moaned forever about waking up stiff but hasn’t for at least a fortnight so I’m delighted Grin

LuluJo1020 · 28/08/2020 22:44

I'm in the midst of returning a nectar mattress. Personally full memory foam doesn't work for me but with this one the sides have completely collapsed after a few weeks. I'm also a front sleeper and it's given me a really bad back because of the moulding into it.

The ts&cs say you can't return within the first month so you give it a proper go. It's now taken us 3 weeks to get a date for collection (next week) and AFTER it's been collected we can apply for the refund. They did offer an immediate 70% refund if we just kept it but I hated it so much I would've just been paying 30% to take it to the tip!

I've replaced it with a £150 mattress fromAmazon, pocket sprung and memory foam top. Soooo much better so far!

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 28/08/2020 22:52

We spent 4000euros on ours and we are not remotely rich and all the rest of our stuff is from IKEA. You spend 1/3 of your life in a bed! And a bad matress can give you pain your whole life. Whether is 600 or 6000, get one you are 100% comfortable with, it's really the one thing you cant cheap out on imo.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 29/08/2020 06:42

I think YABU buy any mattress on-line, whatever the cost, unless you have tried it out in a shop beforehand. It is really important to get the right firmness by testing it out beforehand. However, I don't think the cost is too much (as long as you can afford it). A good mattress is one of the most important things you can buy in your life for your health and comfort.

Florencex · 29/08/2020 07:01

Not at all expensive, in fact it is on the cheaper side. You spend a lot of time in bed it is worth getting a quality mattress.

takenbywine · 29/08/2020 07:34

I think beds and mattresses are something that should be generously invested in as a bad bed could give you loads of issues with your back and muscles. I get a bad back when I stay in hotels as it doesn't match my bed at home. So beds and mattresses are something that shouldn't be taken lightly/cheaply as it shapes your next day and health. A good nights sleep is very important.

ElsieMc · 29/08/2020 08:28

Im surprised at this. We need a new mattress but prices have put us off for a while at least. What also put me off was when replacing a child's bed, the assistant in Dreams told me not to spend too much in shop because their own brand was as good as some of the dearer brand names we were looking at saying it was only the cover quality.

If you are happy with a purchase at this price then that is all that matters really I suppose.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/08/2020 08:42

It's nkt a lot of money. Have you seen prices of mattresses?😱

I have an "online mattress" and am very happy with it. You can nowadays see some in physical shops like John Lewis.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 29/08/2020 09:03

Best mattress we ever had was a Sealy Posturpedic from Costco. Cost about £700 we used it for what seems like forever before moving and buying new. Now considering getting another.
