Dog almost (I hope almost) got severe poisening

Hi all

My dog eats everything. I mean everything pegs, wood, sponges etc. But last night he got a hold of the dog treats packet "Mr Goodman's chicken strips". I was fine with him getting the packet as he will eat treats if he finds them but was I was shocked to see him eating was an Oxygen absorber - severely poisenous to dogs. I rushed him to vets who had to make him sick and said that he will either be fine or he could have an late reaction and could be really sick and have blood in his poo etc. In the next 1-5 days so keep a close eye on him.

AIBU to go completely mad at the company for putting it in there?? Dogs are like toddlers they get into everything and I left him to go and have a bath but why would they put something that could kill a dog in the bag?? It has warning signs not to eat them on the packet covering it but not on the big outter packet where treats are however i didn't even know it was in the packet!! It wasn't obviously there and there was no warning signs on outer packaging to say to remove it once opened. For example, you know to keep washing up tabs out of reach or to take the salt things out of your shoe box because you can clearly see them because of how dangerous they are but I wouldn't have thought I needed to lock away treats and you can't obviously see these absorbers they aren't displayed anywhere.

I'm just so upset my dog normally wakes me up crack of dawn licking my face but he is still asleep.

Which doesn't mean that they haven't rightfully recalled some treats/toys over time but there seems to be very little evidence for the kidney problems supposedly caused by their jerky based treats.

Thanks for the link @SpangleBug

This one is now happy with deer/rabbit/cow ears and deer legs.

Costs more but natural treats all the way now.

I don't think it's the companies responsibility to supervise what happens in your house and keep everyone safe. It's worrying that your dog eats everything and also that your niece was able to access to treats to feed him as many as she liked. It could have been your niece who ate the oxygen absorber. Please also take care with your food composting bin, mouldy bread has toxins in which can kill dogs.

I hope your dog recovers quickly but I do think you need to accept this was your responsibility and not the treat manufacturer.

I remove all dog treats from their original packaging and store them in a clip lock container to keep them fresh but also regardless of where I leave them my dog can't get into them.

Thanks for the warning! I used to give the dog the bag of Aldi dog treats so she has something to do/takes her longer to eat them. Will not be doing that again!

Somanysocks · 28/08/2020 12:27

Hope your dog is ok. Now that you do know these sachets are put in pet treats you can make sure it doesn't happen again.

SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 12:27

Yes, much better. Though I'd avoid giving duck necks. Not that I'm saying that you are planning to do so, but just in case. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-45965408 Poor dog died because of them.

It's amazing the range of body parts you can buy now. Ostrich tracheas and buffalo horns. I should probably explore them a little more.

Thanks all for replies. Really appreciate them. He's resting up being more needy than normal so hoping nothing bad will happen

I truly did not know what was in the packet and will be buying a jar today for them and keeping them well away!

@SpangleBug , we have a brilliant pet shop near us that sells doggie pick and mix!
I buy all sorts for her, a months worth of treats, kept in a large tuppawear on top of the fridge freezer.
Dried pig snout is a favourite along with chicken feet and duck wings. Downside my back garden resembles Jurassic park with animal parts buried in certain places. Think the men that are coming to sort new fence will be in for a shock 😉

Glad he's resting and better (ish) remember to keep an eye out for any unusual behaviour, that's the only way I know mugdog is poorly. Very good at hiding pain and illnesses ( well in my experience)
Infullbloom · 28/08/2020 12:42

All those things your dog eats could kill them.
You really need to muzzle train your dog if it's a scavenger.

CheshireChat · 28/08/2020 12:49

I also think that you could contact the company and explain what happened and ask if they could switch to something else.

Hope 🐶 feels better.

If a company put a non-edible thing (that's actually dangerous) in a bag of edible things then that is bonkers in my view! I'd be writing to them.
