Dog almost (I hope almost) got severe poisening

Hi all

My dog eats everything. I mean everything pegs, wood, sponges etc. But last night he got a hold of the dog treats packet "Mr Goodman's chicken strips". I was fine with him getting the packet as he will eat treats if he finds them but was I was shocked to see him eating was an Oxygen absorber - severely poisenous to dogs. I rushed him to vets who had to make him sick and said that he will either be fine or he could have an late reaction and could be really sick and have blood in his poo etc. In the next 1-5 days so keep a close eye on him.

AIBU to go completely mad at the company for putting it in there?? Dogs are like toddlers they get into everything and I left him to go and have a bath but why would they put something that could kill a dog in the bag?? It has warning signs not to eat them on the packet covering it but not on the big outter packet where treats are however i didn't even know it was in the packet!! It wasn't obviously there and there was no warning signs on outer packaging to say to remove it once opened. For example, you know to keep washing up tabs out of reach or to take the salt things out of your shoe box because you can clearly see them because of how dangerous they are but I wouldn't have thought I needed to lock away treats and you can't obviously see these absorbers they aren't displayed anywhere.

I'm just so upset my dog normally wakes me up crack of dawn licking my face but he is still asleep.

If you know your dog is into everything then you need to dog proof your house.
I have 3 dogs, sadly lost our mastiff during lockdown: he was a hooligan so we had child locks on all kitchen cupboards and fridge, all dog treats in wall cupboard. You need to be very vigilant as you would with a toddler.

Potionqueen · 28/08/2020 09:59

Hope your dog is ok. But it’s your responsibility to keep your dog safe, no one else’s.

LittleMissRedHat · 28/08/2020 10:00

@SpangleBug

I couldn't find them either but I think they are meant to be Mr Goodlads.

Shizzlestix · 28/08/2020 10:05

Irresponsible, it’s hardly the manufacturer’s fault they tried to keep the food in decent condition.

katie2812 · 28/08/2020 10:06

Totally will be so careful now spent hours crying because I thought he was going to die I was sobbing to the vets.

She wasn't left alone she was with my whole family but the kids play amongst themselves.

I think I bought the treats from Poundland or b and m.

He is eating now and managed to give him medicine so he seems to be perking up just got to watch him for next 5 days.

LittleMissRedHat Thank you. That sounds right.

SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 10:08

I'm glad that he's perking up now. Fingers crossed for a smooth recovery.

Suzi888 · 28/08/2020 10:39

Glad he’s a little better today. I used to get my treats from pets at home or loose ones in the box, markies? .
I’m not a fan of b&m or raw hide chews. Take care op

SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 10:40

What's wrong with B&M?

Darbs76 · 28/08/2020 10:41

The treats I use have them, but I always empty them into a jar. My dog has never got the treats and helped himself as I keep them out of reach. It’s your responsibility to make sure your dog doesn’t get the packet, empty them into a container if you think this could happen again.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 28/08/2020 10:47

Any consolation op, Ive got a child lock on my kitchen cupboard as dog figured out that if she put her nose as a certain angle she could open the door and wooded down a bag of treats.
If they want something they will get it.
I hope pooch is ok and no lasting effects.
Learn from it and hide them somewhere else.
I agree with B&M as well, I got dog treats from there , roast bone . It's splintered and she nearly choked. Heart stopper. I complained , all I got back was my dog a suitable size for the treat!

SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 10:50

That's not a B&M thing. That's a cooked bone thing. It's advised not to give cooked bones of any kind to dogs because they can splinter. They really shouldn't sell them though.

Parkandride · 28/08/2020 10:52

I sympathise as I have one that eats anything but you have to treat your house like fort knox, cupboard locks etc if you need them. They also sound a bit grim if they have that sort of stuff in them, I'd avoid Poundland type treats and go for more natural stuff that's not probably shipped in from china. I'm not a dog food snob, mine loves a dentastix, but some of the mass produced treats with rawhide etc are just nasty

Parkandride · 28/08/2020 10:53

Also I hope she makes a quick recovery Flowers

Serin · 28/08/2020 11:02

Our dog was nearly poisoned by MN!!
I got chosen to review some chocolate and stupidly didnt even give a thought to how it would be delivered.
Ddog was delighted when the postman just pushed the package through the door and woolfed down the lot.
I blamed myself.

So how come I can buy a version from a pet shop that doesn't splinter? Anyway was very annoyed that they didn't give a shit as not there problem as they only sell them! Not having a pop at you btw
SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 11:07

The oxygen absorber is just to keep it fresh. They can be found in human food too, nothing grim about it.

I would never give my dogs rawhide, but I do like B&M for sprats, salmon rolls/bites and chicken and duck jerky.

It's luck. Sometimes they'll splinter and sometimes not though they may roast theirs more than others. Personally cooked bones aren't something I'd give to my dogs because it's too risky. Any cooked bone could potentially splinter and it's generally advised not to give them. They really shouldn't sell them.

Sorry your dog is unwell and I hope it passes.
But the product is sold to humans, to be stored and distributed by humans. I really don’t think the whole thing should be dog friendly.
I buy lots of things for my children that I have to unpack, assemble etc before they are safe for my children.

makingmammaries · 28/08/2020 11:36

Most pet treats also come in a plastic bag that can cause an intestinal blockage. The point is that the dog shouldn’t be getting hold of the bag.

Suzi888 · 28/08/2020 11:47

B&m just doesn’t stock good quality treats in my opinion. They had to pull a load off that had been made in China.
Raw hide is very bad for dogs, choking hazard. The dyes are also harmful.
My dog can’t have treats anymore due to his health. He has things like carrots or homemade treats. Jumbones are bad too.

MaddieElla · 28/08/2020 11:52

All dogs should be trained not to touch food without being told to. Mine would stare at a piece of steak on the floor for hours if I let it, because she knows she needs to wait for the command to get it.

Your dog literally hoovers up items, that is so dangerous and will quite possibly kill him one day. No amount of crying to the vet will change that. Even if the packet was left on the floor (although I suspect it was up higher and your dog stole it) it shouldn't be stealing it.

Train your dog not to eat until you say so. It's the easiest thing in the world to do.

SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 11:52

My two would leave home if I attempted to give them carrots. I did have a dog once who loved almost all fruit and veg but unfortunately these two won't even look at it.

Rawhide is a definite no no for me, but I'm quite happy with the B&M treats I do buy, which are mostly meat\fish. I check the ingredients carefully. They're fussy so aren't happy with just any old treat.

MaddieElla · 28/08/2020 11:53

*until being told to

SpangleBug · 28/08/2020 11:58

The B&M thing seems to be something of a hoax.
