@Martina69 ??? wtf lmao

TheoriginalLEM · 28/08/2020 05:07

I love that there is a gin bandwagon. I am not really into flavoured gins but the tanqueray sevilla is lovely.

I have tried a LOT of gin. It was my birtday this week so currently have a bottle of 'old tom' bathtub gin and abottle of mermaid gin. Both ridiculously expensive but taste amazing but very different. Only like fevertree tonic as they dont contain any artificial sweeteners. Lemonade??? Get out!

LioneIRichTea · 28/08/2020 06:49

I didn’t used to like gin and then a friend pointed out it was probably the tonic I didn’t like (she was right!)

This! I thought I hated gin too but it was the tonic. Indian tonic is grim, try the clementine or Mediterranean Fevertree ones or other mixers Smile My favourite at the moment is Bombay Sapphire bramble gin GrinGin

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/08/2020 07:01

I hate gin, I also hate wine. I drink vodka and cider, how uncultured.

Arsewell · 28/08/2020 07:10

I like gin but the hangovers ... Sad
Mind you, I've just bought a Parma Violet gin, it looks like something from My Little Pony but so good with lemonade!

(I feel like this is the incorrect way to drink gin)

LioneIRichTea · 28/08/2020 07:10

@Waxonwaxoff0 nothing wrong with a good cider Smile Rum is my drink Gin

MaskingForIt · 28/08/2020 07:53

The gin phase will pass. Over the past few years there has been waxing and waning popularity of wine/prosecco/gin. It will move into something else soon and all the good little sheep with follow.

AuntieStella · 28/08/2020 08:01

I don't get why people keep drinking gin that has been made to taste not-like-gin

I go for pretty straightforward ones, usually supermarket own brand, with a VSOJ (overproof) for special occasions. And own brand tonic or Scheweppes.

I've been drinking G&Ts since the 1980s (when I first realised I liked it) so I don think I'm particularly sheep like!

(And I've liked wine and fizzy wine for just as long)

Thurmanmurman · 28/08/2020 08:03

I hate it too. Tastes like hairspray!

JassyRadlett · 28/08/2020 08:05

I hate gin. Tastes like a week old orange covered in black pepper and now it's trendy I hate it even more. The people who've always drunk Gin must be raging at all these Gin hipsters with their bastardised versions. I hope they don't start that site with my precious vodka.

I’m a long-termer and TBH the best bit of it is that people now usually have gin at home and don’t try to push the utter horror that is vodka on me. Grin

Are you a fellow Bristolian Lionel? Smile

Capsulate · 28/08/2020 08:22

I'm lukewarm about gin I think... I do like it, but I only really like wine if I'm honest. I don't even like champagne or Envy (not envy) prosecco. I also like liqueurs which were de rigueur among my parents' friends at the end of a meal like Amaretto Blush. But, it's kind of like pudding...just in a glass!

We rarely have Gin in the house. We do almost always have whisky, but I'm half Irish and went to school in Ireland and DH and I also spent a few years living in Scotland, and we thought it would be rude not to get into Scotch while there!

I do like gin, on occasion, but wouldn't rush to buy it and I'm picky about tonic. Anyone puts slimline Schweppes in my glass and I would rather drink water thanks!

But yes, sorry, you now have to leave mumsnet OP Sad. Sorry and all that Wink.

JadesRollerDisco · 28/08/2020 08:26

I don't drink. But if I did it wouldn't be gin. When I miss having a drink it's always Rum based cocktails I think of first. I have a feeling Rum might be due a revival.

userxx · 28/08/2020 08:28

I hope not, it's the work of the devil.

Very true.

Never went away in our house. The best cocktails are rum based imo Grin

SadderThanEeyore · 28/08/2020 08:33

How can you say you don't like gin because you've tried one type, once?
The reason the gin trend has survived is because there are so many types.
You need to establish if it's juniper you don't like or tonic to start with.
If you like sweet drinks then a good g&t is not for you. Try the Whitley Neill flavours - Raspberry is good with elderflower tonic or elderflower cordial. You can then adjust the sweetness if you use cordial by mixing with soda / slimline fever tree / lemonade.
Rhubarb & Ginger gin is good with ginger ale (the only time Schweppes is good!!)
If you like dry flavours try a good London dry (not Gordon's) with slim line fever tree and a wedge of lime / lemon - slim lime has a very different flavour profile to Indian tonic.

DragonPie · 28/08/2020 08:33

I wish people who like would gin stop trying to persuade me that it’s great and I should drink. I don’t like it. I don’t like tonic. Now stop. Get over it.

formerbabe · 28/08/2020 09:38

It's just trendy right now, it will be something else soon. In the noughties it was all vodka bars and pinot grigio....now it's gin and prosecco. I'm not a fan of either

LakieLady · 28/08/2020 10:09

@longtompot, I love Tanquerays too, but even better is Hendricks.

Bloody lovely.

I hated gin until I tried it with lime. Never looked back ...

However, I was only 13 or 14 at the time, so my gin career started early. Grin

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 28/08/2020 10:22

I hate gin, I also hate tonic. I know lots of people who say they like gin but it's a fad, someone I know was posting about drinking candyfloss flavoured gin with lemonade, that's basically a supersweet alcopop, if you have to disguise the flavour that much you don't like gin! I much prefer a nice rum

Capsulate · 28/08/2020 10:47

When people drink gin and lime, is that fresh lime or like Rose's cordial type thing?

pasteldechocolateconchispa · 28/08/2020 10:50

When all the gin thing became popular I got put on medication which meant I can’t drink alcohol and I feel like I’ve missed out on so much

I used to drink in Spain the pomada its Mahón gin with lemon Fanta, very good, had it one bar like a slush puppy
