Cadbury’s in a Chilli?

WilsonMilson · 27/08/2020 16:48

Making chilli, recipe calls for cocoa powder, but I’ve only got Cadbury’s drinking choc.

Tempted to bung a spoon in and hope for the best, but also worried it may be revolting and turn into a bizarre sweet dessert chilli.

Would I be completely batshit to give it a go? Maybe it will turn into some Heston Blumenthal - esque taste sensation?!

I wouldn't, plain cocoa is nice but not sure about drinking choc. You probably wouldn't notice it though.

Instant coffee also gives a darkness.

LiberteEgaliteBeyonce · 27/08/2020 16:49

Don't do it. Cadbury's ain't nowhere close to cocoa powder. Cocoa powder or nothing.

LiberteEgaliteBeyonce · 27/08/2020 16:50

Also cocoa powder isn't sweet Cadbury's is sugar loaded.

WendyHoused · 27/08/2020 16:51

GOD NO!

It's got a tonne of other stuff and bugger all cocoa. Sugar, dried milok solids etc.
Just omit it, or pop a piece of dark chocolate in if you have any.

SchmooobyDoo · 27/08/2020 16:51

Sister once made Satay sauce with Panda peanut butter...

LivingoffCoffee · 27/08/2020 16:53

Use instant coffee/espresso powder

EverythingisBlossom · 27/08/2020 16:54

A friend has told me on more than one occasion that she swears by a whole bar of galaxy in her chilli. Makes it lovely and creamy apparently.

I made a mental note at that point to never accept an invitation to dinner.

NastyBlouse · 27/08/2020 16:54

Oh god no don’t do it

A few squares of dark chocolate — at least 70% — would work if you’ve got any.

Burnout101 · 27/08/2020 16:55

Definitely will be much better with no cocoa at all than with drinking choc but second the suggestions for instant coffee, just a little bit will do the same job as the cocoa.

FOJN · 27/08/2020 16:56

You could substitute good quality dark chocolate if you have any but I don't think I'd chance drinking chocolate.

WilsonMilson · 27/08/2020 16:56

I’ve stepped away from the drinking choc.

Coffee, really?? Might have to try it.

Also @EverythingisBlossom an entire bar of Galaxy? She might as well make a trifle with that chilli and have a Rachel in Friends moment. Confused

Burnout101 · 27/08/2020 16:57

@EverythingisBlossom - a whole bar??? My stomach just turned, hope it's just her excuse for why the Galaxy goes missing when she cooks, can't imagine eating that chilli 🤢

hula008 · 27/08/2020 16:58

Sister once made Satay sauce with Panda peanut butter...

What are you supposed to put in it?

FOJN · 27/08/2020 17:02

I'm confused too, I always use peanut butter in satay.

HemlockStarglimmer · 27/08/2020 17:09

I'm guessing Panda peanut butter is really sweet. Don't quote me though. As far as I'm concerned peanut butter is the devil's smegma.

whirlwindwallaby · 27/08/2020 17:42

Proper 85%+ cocoa dark chocolate or cocoa powder, otherwise leave it out! A spoon of Vegemite is good in a chilli.

BanjoStarz · 27/08/2020 17:42

“Devils Smegma” GrinGrinGrin

Coffee will work.

As for the whole bar of galaxy, just no, why do you want your chilli to be creamy anyway Envy (not envy) rich and smooth definitely but not creamy!

whirlwindwallaby · 27/08/2020 17:43

Only 100% peanuts peanut butter in a satay too.

speakout · 27/08/2020 17:49

I am confused about the peanut butter.
Most peanut butters contain no sugar- so why not good for a satay?

Davespecifico · 27/08/2020 17:50

Absolutely not. Even the cocoa powder will be wrong. This sort of recipe calls for very high cocoa content not very sweet chocolate.
Chocolate when it was initially used in America many years ago was not the sweet confection we know today and was an ideal accompaniment to savoury dishes.

speakout · 27/08/2020 17:50

Even the cocoa powder will be wrong. Why?

Burnout101 · 27/08/2020 18:11

Cocoa powder IS 100% cocoa (at least the ones I've used) I'm not sure how you could get a higher cocoa content.

BashfulClam · 27/08/2020 18:17

My dad did this on hearing that cocoa was in chilli. It was utterly rank (possibly because he was pissed as usual and ripped in half a tub). My mum was fuming as she’d didn’t ages making it.

FromageRay · 27/08/2020 18:19

I've used a decent milk chocolate before and it's been spot on 🤷🏻‍♀️

peppermintpigs · 27/08/2020 18:20

No. It needs to be a square of high cocoa content dark chocolate.
