to wonder if there is anything that could be changed in our society that most people would agree is reasonable

Without angry headlines in the Daily Mail, columns and tweets by Piers Morgan and Laurence Fox, comments by Boris Johnson, no angry arguments on Twitter, on social media, on morning TV programmes etc

Just something that unites most people as a good thing, something that is wrong and needs changing.

Because it's just division at the moment. Division, tribes, culture wars etc.

Can anyone think of anything?

I think carers allowance should be paid at a decent rate (at least at NMW) so that those who care 24/7 for loved ones with disabilities can have a decent standard of care. At £67/week, it is the lowest of all paid benefits and assuming you only do 35h/care (many do twice or three times as much) is under £2/h - a fraction of the NMW.

dairyfairies · 27/08/2020 07:18

decent standard of life (not care) for the carer

drspouse · 27/08/2020 07:23

Most people would agree that all children should have a school place.
They won't agree that my DS should be in the same classroom as their precious DC and they won't agree to paying more taxes for it.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 27/08/2020 07:26

A hook on the back of every public toilet door.

Pelleas · 27/08/2020 07:28

I have often thought basic eye care (glasses) should be free for anyone who needs them. Being able to see is such a fundamental need. I don't mean that designer glasses etc. should be free, but anyone who needs a basic pair of specs should be able to get them without having to pay or be means-tested.

TheBusDriver · 27/08/2020 07:32

This maybe controversial but children with SEN should be taught in separate schools so there is no disruption in classes for other pupils.

Then these schools should be properly funded to allow that child to meet their expected target.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/08/2020 07:38

Better funding for education and a greater emphasis on technical and vocational education for those who are not traditionally academic.

Sanjii · 27/08/2020 07:42

yes, because all children with SEN are the same and they are a all disruptive. And only children with SEN are disruptive.

Anything else where you would like the disabled see segregated from the rest of society?

Fuck yes!

Maybe they'd like separate buses and trains, restaurants, shops? Or just ban all people with disabilities from accessing services?

Keaveny · 27/08/2020 07:52

We can end the thread now!

Seriously though, there is very little that most people would agree on, as everything has a cost, which means increased taxes or taking money away from something else, which would lead to a load of arguments.

Sanjii · 27/08/2020 07:56

That would save a lot of money at the same time. Win win! I think we should also ban disabled children from playing outside so they cannot be bullied by the non-disabled children (this was suggested to me by a group of neighbours when I spoke to them about their little NT bullies - easily sorted if I keep my DC indoors). voilà

Collidascope · 27/08/2020 07:58

@SinisterBumFacedCat

Euthanasia for terminal illnesses, especially painful ones. Most people wouldn’t want to prolong their lives if they knew they were going to die slowly and painfully. Unfortunately no government has the balls to even consider it.
Yes, this. I think this is an issue where MPs really don't represent the public, who, I believe, largely want euthanasia and the right to die.

Given the poster admits it 'might be controversial' this nasty idea is presumably just intended to be goady.
VaggieMight · 27/08/2020 08:03

I would like to see an end to jury's being used in sexual assault cases. There's too much bias, ignorance and judgement from the lay person.

Add to that motorway services toilets to have seats on them. I don't want to use them (what you'd catch off them is worse than "the virus"!!), but it would stop me driving hundreds of miles thinking "for god sake, who actually nicks a bog seat from a motorway services, just go to B&Q!!!". 🤔
Splodgetastic · 27/08/2020 08:06

@fallfallfall, I would definitely agree with that. Did you know you can twin your toilet through a charity that campaigns for this, as a gift for someone?

VaggieMight · 27/08/2020 08:09

Free childcare for working parents from 6 months.

The80sweregreat · 27/08/2020 08:09

Euthanasia and more living wills ( which do exist but don't go far enough if someone wants to take their own life with dignity but the doctors say no) more clinics set up so people can make that choice, as they can do in Switzerland. (I know there are many pitfuls to these arguments but it could work)
There are lots of things I'd love to change: many more specialist schools for children with autism and SEN as these children seem to really fall through the cracks, especially once they become adults.

Splodgetastic · 27/08/2020 08:09

@Aroundtheworldin80moves this already exists, but schools aren’t incentivised to use it, such that people end up failing GCSE and end up having to do functional skills classes and these tests on their apprenticeships. We need to change the measure of success for schools for this to happen.

Splodgetastic · 27/08/2020 08:11

Agree on the coat hooks. There should be more coat hooks generally. They seem to have been designed out on newer trains.

OhTheRoses · 27/08/2020 08:13

Improvements to social care and MH care (neither are the responsibility of schools - they are the responsibility of the NHS)
Shift the emphasis from multiple qualifications to well educated (too many graduates are neither literate nor numerate)
Reintroduce far higher standards in teaching/nursing/social work, etc so they get back some authority.
Reintroduce different sorts of schools that will nurture different sorts of children and allow schools to permanently exclude.
Clamp down on modern slavery rather than focussing on the past.

Splodgetastic · 27/08/2020 08:13

I would like to see pensioners brought in to schools to help teach basic life skills such as woodwork, gardening, sewing, cooking, housework etc. Already happening in Germany.

VaggieMight · 27/08/2020 08:13

Good renting history should be accepted as proof that people can afford a mortgage without having to provide a deposit.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 27/08/2020 08:17

All of these suggestions are controversial except for the hook on the toilet door - brilliant idea
