To cut my own hair?

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 26/08/2020 17:29

DH lost his job due to covid so moneys massively tight. I feel like a haircut is a luxury so going to cut my (medium-long) hair myself. Dh thinks I’m crazy!
Does anyone cut their own hair? Any tips? X

I did during lockdown but my hair is very thick and long-ish so I could get away with it if I make a bodge (I did) but I just tie it up. Google cutting your own hair there are loads of tips and youtube videos.

Tooshytoshine · 26/08/2020 17:50

I cut my wife's hair. She doesn't cut mine as she doesn't have a good eye or the patience for it.

Make sure the scissors are sharp, properly section your hair and take your time.

Do not drink wine beforehand😂

Sparklesocks · 26/08/2020 17:51

I did during lockdown after watching a few YouTube videos. I also recommend using proper hairdresser scissors if you can get them.

The best approach is to do a tiny bit at a time, with very small snips - then it’s much harder to balls it up!

Good luck!

Cheesypea · 26/08/2020 17:52

I used to go to students when cash was tight.

Sexnotgender · 26/08/2020 17:53

I cut my own hair and have done for years. I have very curly hair and got sick of hairdressers making an arse of it then charging me a fortune for the privilege.

JagerPlease · 26/08/2020 17:56

I haven't been near a hairdresser in years. Get some hairdressing scissors from Amazon, do a small section at a time. I think longer hair is easier as it's more forgiving

yolio · 26/08/2020 17:56

I bent forward and let hair hang down and cut straight across what I could see in the mirror.

Worked a treat, but I bung it up anyways, it was getting so straggly. I'm letting the colour grow out also and it's all colours of the rainbow now, but strangely enough the grey is kind of blonde, well a dirty colour blonde and I was always dark. That was a surprise!.

Lockdownseperation · 26/08/2020 17:57

DH did mine recently with hair dressing scissors and after watching a YouTube video. It wasn’t bad at all.

Look on money saving expert for advise about where to cut back on your overall spending.

BitchTitties · 26/08/2020 17:58

I got my OH to do mine with the clippers (without an attachment). I have a blunt cut though, wouldn’t work so well if you have layers. It was quick & easy!

SoManyActivities · 26/08/2020 17:59

My main tip is just do a tiny bit at a time. It will take ages but as someone else said, it does make it much hard to mess up!

Sayitagainwhydontyou · 26/08/2020 18:01

I stick mine in two plaits and take an inch off the bottom with nail scissors. I'm a complete disgrace when it comes to personal grooming though.

LittleRed53 · 26/08/2020 18:05

I've been cutting my own hair since I was 15 when a hairdresser completely ignored everything I said and gave me an awful hairdo that I had to redo myself in the car on the way to my sister's wedding (I was a bridesmaid, lots of photos expected of course!)

I'd advise watching a youtube instructional video on a style you want, and a professional one, not just a random person having a go at DIY hair cutting. There are some really helpful videos out there.

Also be prepared that it probably won't be perfect, but if you can live with that (I prefer living with my own mistakes than someone else's), go for it!

It will always grow back Wink

Watch videos. Be cautious.

CMOTDibbler · 26/08/2020 18:18

I have long hair with a fringe and layers at the front and cut it myself. I hate going to the hairdresser, and resent paying good money to not be happy with it (they always want to put layers in it at the back, no matter how many times I say not to, and then it permanently looks awful. This way I can only blame myself if I don't like it.
Really sharp scissors, take a small amount at a time (esp fringes), and don't try for a style which needs to be really symmetrical and sharp

MrsWooster · 26/08/2020 18:19

Superdrug hairdressing scissors and the ‘Mumsnet haircut’ (google it) have kept me broadly presentable for years.

Frenchfancy · 26/08/2020 18:23

I've done the mumsnet haircut for years. I hate going to the hairdressers. They are always so condescending, you have to stare at your own face, say its lovely when it's not, and pay for the privilege.

lovelymm · 26/08/2020 18:24

Go on Groupon. I got a haircut from there for £16. Don't fuck about with it, you'll be miserable if it goes wrong

AChooooo · 26/08/2020 18:26

Oh my goodness, I’ve not paid anyone to cut my hair since I was 17 and then just because I also paid to have it dyed too, even then I usually did my own hair from about 14!

YANBU, it really isn’t too hard.

Marcipex · 26/08/2020 18:30

I did mine with the new dog clippers on the longest setting.
DH did do the middle of the back for me though.
I do my fringe by twisting it and snipping it about half way down my nose.
It looks fine. I think.

I am training my DH (with the help of YouTube) how to cut my hair. I hate going to the hairdressers.

I have cut my own hair before. Tied a pony tail and cut it with kitchen scissors Grin - I have curly hair and tons of it, it turned out fine. I have also just bought proper hair scissors to cut DD’s hair, I’m not paying £20 for someone to cut 1/2 an inch of hair...

muckandnettles · 26/08/2020 18:37

I cut my own hair during lockdown and actually thought it looked okay, though had to ask dd to do the back. As pp have said, good sharp scissors help. I also found that cutting it dry was better as you can see what you are doing more. I just hacked at it until it looked about right, starting with just a little bit and I found it's best to have a few goes at it - cut it then wash and dry it, have a look and see what else needs doing, leave it a day or so then do the same again until it's right. Of course, during lockdown it was easier to do that as I wasn't seeing anyone much so if it was wonky for a few days it didn't matter.

CarolVordermansArse · 26/08/2020 18:54

I have cut my own hair for years too, after many 'top' hairdressers ignoring what I wanted, although the colourists were much worse.

The Mumsnet haircut made me look as if someone had crept up on me with a hedge cutter but the Crea Clips or similar aren't too bad. I don't have a lot of patience and as I leave my wavy hair to dry naturally most of the time it doesn't matter if I snip a few bits that I shouldn't. However, right now I don't care anyway as I rarely go out.
