Dh has recently bought me an iPad for my birthday, its very pretty and lovely, but I don't really know what I should be using it for?

I'm a sahm in my 30s, so don't need it for work or anything like that, so far I have looked up craft patterns, ordered some crap from amazon and been on Mumsnet, but I really feel like I'm not taking full advantage of it as I mostly use my iPhone for things, so aibu to ask what do you actually use yours for?

@beachysandy81 I think reading on an iPad has worsened by astygmatism, but yes reading on a phone is even worse.

beachysandy81 · 27/08/2020 14:38

Honeygirlz - yes, I have been on my phone a lot during lockdown and now feel like I need to visit the optician so was thinking the ipad would be preferable though it is probably better not to go on any gadgets really!!! Oh well!

Littlepond · 27/08/2020 14:45

Merge Dragons, mainly.

Inthe60s · 27/08/2020 14:45

For general web browsing.

I also use it for reading a lot! It is a little "heavy" to hold, but I prefer it to Kindle.

I have a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard, and use that when at kitchen table for emails, etc.

With a work PC and a work phone, I don't really need it, but it is useful.

hastingsmua1 · 27/08/2020 14:48

I use my iPad Pro (2018) as a laptop replacement. I can do literally everything that laptop can do, including working from home.

I work in finance and have a specialist computer and keyboard which frankly are quite outdated, so being able to use my iPad for other tasks is a breath of fresh air.

TinyMetalBirds · 27/08/2020 14:51

I use mine far too much.
Listening to music - Spotify
Podcasts - BBC Sounds and the app that came with theiPad
Learning languages - Duolingo
Checking and replying to emails
General internet - FB, Mumsnet etc
Quizzes - Sporcle
Reading - Kindle app
Taking photos and videos
Borrowing ebooks from library - Borrowbox

Zebrahooves · 27/08/2020 14:59

I use mine all the time too. From playing games, watching tv, doing workouts via YouTube, reading magazines (I use my kindle more for books), listening to the radio and BBC Sounds, music, browsing the internet and online shopping.

It is one thing that I have definitely had value for money from.

hastingsmua1 · 27/08/2020 15:04

Outside of work, I use my iPad for online shopping. Mainly websites that aren’t optimised well for iPhone. For example if I’m on ASOS and they have like 1000 pairs of shoes in a certain category, it’s so much faster to speed browse on a larger screen.

IveSeenThings · 27/08/2020 15:38

Those of you with Really, could you tell me- is it the entire magazine, even with the classifieds in etc? Or is it just the articles? Thinking of something like Ideal Home where the 'where to buy' for an article is at the back of the magazine rather than on the page with the photos, thanks.

mintich · 27/08/2020 15:43

Readly app, pinterest, and the kids watch a lot of shows on it. Also handy to take on trips

The entire magazine. It’s kind of like swishing through a PDF. So all of the adverts. I love reading US magazines for all the random ads as much as the recipes.

Every magazine I’ve thought of wanting to read bar Private Eye and US Entertainment Weekly are on there. Currently loving house decoration magazines that I’d never spend masses on too!

IveSeenThings · 27/08/2020 16:04

Thank you browncoatwaffles. That's really helpful!
I like The Spectator and Private Eye, and New Scientist, none of which are on there...but there are so many others on there, it looks like an absolute bargain.
I used to spend way too much on magazines, but have got it down to £0 at the moment... taken me a long time, but I could stretch to that subscription, and there's no physical copy taking up space in my flat.

Thecobwebsarewinning · 28/08/2020 08:03

@IveSeenThings. Another plus is that you can share a Readly subscription so another family member also has access to it.

Yeah my mum used mine for a long while when I subscribed to it- I stopped cos I just wasn't reading enough to justify it anymore.

IveSeenThings · 28/08/2020 11:17

That does sound good- my children definitely would read lots, teenaged DD in particular. Thanks!

thedaywewillremeber · 28/08/2020 11:25

Playing games, listening to music, watching tv.,shopping and emails

Bbang · 28/08/2020 11:29

Currently mainly use mine at uni for note taking and various projects but I really love procreate and have been teaching myself digital art (have actually sold a few as downloads!) ☺️

Bbang · 28/08/2020 11:29

Also Apple TV! Got some love shoes to watch on there.

CoralFish · 28/08/2020 11:41

Procreate for drawing

liverpoolnana · 28/08/2020 11:50

I am reading this with the greatest interest, as it is all so new to me.
Sorry if this sounds like a daft question, but is there an ongoing cost apart from charging the thing) after buying an ipad? I mean, is it like a phone, and you have to PAYG/take out a subscription?
Second, does it work anywhere or is a router needed in the house?
Third, I know ipad is a brand name, but is it different from a tablet?

Please be patient with me!

And so sorry, but I've thought of another question. I'm assuming calls can't be made, just texts/emails?

TinyMetalBirds · 29/08/2020 21:48

@liverpoolnana, you will need WiFi - you can connect to your house WiFi if you have it. Apart from that no ongoing charge. It will work anywhere for non internet stuff like taking pictures and videos, for internet related stuff you need to be somewhere with WiFi - eg a cafe (or at home).
An iPad is basically Apple’s tablet. I haven’t tried other brands except Kindles, and I prefer the iPad to those.
You can make calls through FaceTime if the person you are calling also has that. Or through Google Hangouts or some other app. My iPad is always ringing because my kids’ accounts are connected to mine, so I will be in the middle of something and a call will pop up from “Crazy Idot” (sic) or “DeathPudding”, aka Toby or James.

Lolwhat · 29/08/2020 22:20

Netflix, reading, studying, social media, the occasional crappy mobile game, photo editing, buying endless amount of tat online🤣 work emails, work related things (I work for my mum and in her mind there’s no such thing as office hours🤣)

liverpoolnana · 30/08/2020 07:48

Thank you so much, TinyMetalBirds. That was very helpful.

nosswith · 30/08/2020 07:53

Work gave me one long before wfh became the standard given the pandemic. Apart from work things I use it for Skype calls to family abroad, as I can move it around and show things such as when I have put up a new picture.
