Dh has recently bought me an iPad for my birthday, its very pretty and lovely, but I don't really know what I should be using it for?

I'm a sahm in my 30s, so don't need it for work or anything like that, so far I have looked up craft patterns, ordered some crap from amazon and been on Mumsnet, but I really feel like I'm not taking full advantage of it as I mostly use my iPhone for things, so aibu to ask what do you actually use yours for?

veewee · 27/08/2020 12:48

Which apps do people use for drawing and writing?

I got rid of my laptop and just use iPad now

I hardly use it though. It’s just for online shopping, the food shop and sometimes il do a spreadsheet for budget planning.
We take it when we go places so we can watch Netflix in bed.

My son uses it more than me and he watched CBeebies and has some colouring in games on it

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/08/2020 12:51

Mine is a mini

StrawberrySquash · 27/08/2020 12:56

It's better than my phone for online recipes when cooking. And I often play podcasts through it as I don't have a fancy speaker and it's louder than my phone.

DinosApple · 27/08/2020 12:57

I'm similar OP, we've got an iPad mini. It took me a while to get used to it as it's our only apple product - phones are android, laptops and PCs Microsoft.

I had to Google how to browse the internet- Safari, who knew (everyone but me) 😂.

Because my life is android I tend to just use it for the internet and games, the kids hijack it for watching stuff sometimes too. But I have to say, I'm super impressed with the battery life and speed - although that might be because I've not clogged it up with as many Apps as my phone.

The drawing stuff sounds good though.

Florencex · 27/08/2020 12:57

I use mine mainly for emails, banking, street maps, photos, watching TV or Netflix or YouTube, virtual jigsaws and I have one game I play.

peppermintpigs · 27/08/2020 13:07

Sporcle
Phase 10 game
Srch game

Floralnomad · 27/08/2020 13:10

I use mine for just about everything , email ,banking , shopping , games , Sky , Bt sport - I never use a computer / laptop I do everything on the iPad

Starbuggy · 27/08/2020 13:12

I have an old iPad mini which I use for watching Netflix in bed and for craft patterns. I used it more before I got my laptop though

honeygirlz · 27/08/2020 13:13

I read voraciously on mine. I have thousands of books in iBooks. I have a Kindle ereader but never used it, screen too small.

MrsExpo · 27/08/2020 13:14

Much more than my phone because you get the full screen version of web pages etc, not the mobile version. Watching TV, reading, diary, banking, photography editing, internet browsing generally (for reasons above), playing games when I'm bored, face time etc, making notes, diary .... I love mine.

honeygirlz · 27/08/2020 13:16

Also currently obsessed with the game Wordscape (it's free). It's like crossword puzzles, but no clues. I'm on level 506 out of God knows how many.

zingally · 27/08/2020 13:30

I bought myself an ipad as a 30th birthday present to myself! Honestly, all I use it for nowadays is watching YouTube videos in bed!
I used to play some games on it, there are some really good ones out there, but I got out of the habit.

Frazzled2207 · 27/08/2020 13:33

Browsing the internet and watching stuff on iplayer or netflix.
Kids play games on theirs.

QueenH · 27/08/2020 13:45

Watching Netflix or similar in the bath, or in the kitchen while I’m preparing dinner

Thecobwebsarewinning · 27/08/2020 13:46

I rarely put my iPad down. I have subscriptions to newspapers and a Readly subscription that gives me access to thousands of digital versions of print magazines. A family Spotify account gives me all the music I’ll ever want to listen to. I watch live and catchup tv, download movies and watch box sets. I do all my banking and manage my finances/utility/mobile phone/broadband accounts. I use social media to stay in touch with friends and Family. I FaceTime my mum and children. I zoom with mates. I read Kindle books and listen to audio books. I research any interesting points that crop up when reading or listening to books. I look up recipes and search for cooking/gardening/housekeeping/diy advice. I do 95% of my shopping online - groceries, clothes, white goods, gifts, plants, craft supplies, wine, cosmetics, cars. I keep all my household records in files. I store , edit and organise photos. I use a postcard app to send photos as postcards to keep in touch with older friends and family who aren’t online. I make medical, hair and beauty appointments online. If I need tradesmen I research them and employ them through various specialist apps. I do Zoom and online fitness classes. I book restaurants, theatre tickets, cinema, hotels, holidays, flights and train trips. I check bus times. I play game, do puzzles and jigsaws. I use it as a calendar, diary and alarm clock. I control our heating and hot water. I order takeaways, scan photos. I use habit trackers to help me maintain good eating/exercise patterns. Using my Fitbit I achieve step/sleep/fitness goals. I listen to meditation tracks at night.

There’s probably more but those are the ones that spring to mind. Everything syncs between my iPad and my phone and is backed up to the Cloud so my data is protected. It’s bloody marvellous.

Rebelwithallthecause · 27/08/2020 13:48

Don’t download the sims for iPad
I wasted so many hours on it

DolphinsAndNemesis · 27/08/2020 13:54

I have an iPad mini that I use every day. I don't have a smartphone, though. I use my iPad to read the news, watch Netflix, listen to podcasts, etc. I like that it is nice and portable but with a screen big enough to make it enjoyable to read/watch stuff.

bwfcchick88 · 27/08/2020 14:05

I have a Samsung tablet and use it for shopping/browsing online, reading academic books for my research, YouTube and Prime Video/Netflix. Prefer my kindle fire/paperwhite for reading 'fun' books though! You'll love it once you start using it properly!

BrowncoatWaffles · 27/08/2020 14:22

Since lockdown started I've become obsessed with Readly. I got a free three month subscription and am not paying £6.99 a month for it. It's a digital way to read magazines but SO MANY MAGAZINES.

This month I've read geeky magazines, gaming magazines, film magazines, decorating magazines, celeb gossip, health, and goodness knows what else. I'm also constantly reading all the glossy food and baking magazines for recipe ideas (including American and Aussie ones - my guilty pleasures!).

I had subscriptions to Women's Health and Cosmo but have cancelled both because they're available on the Readly app, along with literally hundreds of other titles. I find reading magazines much more fun because it feels more flickable - if I paid 6 quid for Good Food magazine I'd feel like I had to read every page. With this when it appears I'll swish through it with my finger, screen shot a few recipes along the way and then move onto the next thing.

Also, you can search back issues of everything - so when I had a random urge for cinnamon buns I was able to search for all magazines that had done recipes of them.

I guess it depends if you're a magazine person but for me it was a game changer!

DominaShantotto · 27/08/2020 14:24

Games, reading books on, netflix, note taking for university when I don't want to lug a laptop around, colouring books... and most often as a second screen for my macbook

OnceUponATimeInHollywood · 27/08/2020 14:27

I myself an ipad whilst in lockdown. Its good for online shopping and watching things but I probably only use it once a week. Which is terrible and maybe a waste of £400?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 27/08/2020 14:29

I echo using it in bed, bath and cooking etc. I also use it when doing the decorating as I have a super handy little stand, that I purchased from the pound shop no less, to prop it up. My mother who has no Internet or smartphone, thinks I'm some sort of future girl or I am a star trek enterprise employee..

beachysandy81 · 27/08/2020 14:35

Better for your eyes than a phone I would think!

I would use it for TV in bed with headphones as there are tons of programmes I don't get to watch as no one in my house likes them!! Mainly subtitled foreign language dramas!!!

Also looking up recipes, banking, browsing shopping online - all stuff I could do on a phone but is better bigger. I hate having to get my laptop out for this stuff as I use it for work and don't want it hanging round the house in case it gets broken.
