Adult only swimming

Shoxfordian · 26/08/2020 14:47

I'm a member of a gym which advertises adult only indoor swimming from 6am until 3pm. There is also an outdoor pool for children/family use all day.

Recently because of bad weather, they couldn't open the outdoor pool so they allowed all the noisy annoying children into the indoor pool during supposedly adult only time.

I have complained but they said its because the outside pool had to be closed. Don't see why this means my nice quiet swim has to be ruined by noisy kids.

Aibu?

Well if people are paying for family memberships they don’t want to lose out on the pool. Surely if you went early enough there wouldn’t be any children. They all go back to school soon so not a huge deal imo.

SantaClaritaDiet · 26/08/2020 14:51

They should just update their times - keep it adult only from 6 to 9am for example, that would be more fair.

isthatatree · 26/08/2020 14:52

It's not great for either group of people but this way both groups can swim and that's better than nothing

MinesAPintOfTea · 26/08/2020 14:54

I think the pool is unreasonable for advertising adult only swim times that are only adult only in good weather. Yanbu for wanting them to stick to the advertised plan. Yabu a little bit for not wanting children around when everything has been closed for months and it's the school holidays.

ImFree2doasiwant · 26/08/2020 14:58

Yanbu. I have 2 small DC but would hate the have loads of kids there if I were trying to actually swim. They should amend the hours, so there are still adult only sessions.

Shoxfordian · 26/08/2020 14:59

I think the pool shouldn't advertise adult only when it isn't adult only if the weather is bad. But also parents should take their children when family time is advertised and not expect to be able to swim when it isn't, regardless of it being school holidays.

You have a choice. Swim with them or don't. Your preferred option is that they can't swim at all. You are being unreasonable and a tad selfish. I am being overly harsh as just turned away with children at my gym during adult only time after waiting an hour for aqua to finish.

Sailingblue · 26/08/2020 15:02

Well the parents presumably turned up expecting to swim but couldn’t so I don’t think they did anything wrong. They probably need to just amend the times temporarily. I would say though there are limited times people can take children swimming at the moment if they don’t have lessons. I’m visiting my parents over the weekend and looked at pool availability within a half hour radius. Not one pool was open for children.

shieldedsally · 26/08/2020 15:03

I don't think you're being unreasonable. A fairer split would be to have some indoor hours for kids, and some without so everyone gets a chance.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/08/2020 15:03

Tbh leisure centres, gyms etc have the worst communication and admin of any service- they could have managed it better but it’s not the families fault

Shoxfordian · 26/08/2020 15:04

How hard is it to just check when the family swim time is before you go though or think the weather is bad so the outdoor pool probably isn't open. The timetable doesn't change daily so it's not hard to plan and go when you're not bothering anyone

OP posts:
SummerHouse · 26/08/2020 15:06

How hard is it for you to check though?

Shoxfordian · 26/08/2020 15:06

I do check hence why I go when it claims to be adult only times

RandomTree · 26/08/2020 15:11

No family swimming until 3pm in the school holidays would be rubbish, so I think the gym are doing the right thing. However I agree they should add a warning about adult-only hours ('unless family pool closed' or whatever).

beckysamantha91 · 26/08/2020 15:12

Is this David Lloyd? This is a constant annoyance of mine as well.

Shoxfordian · 26/08/2020 15:13

It is David Lloyd

Ask for discount/refund

SummerHouse · 26/08/2020 15:14

I think it's a no win situation. You can't please all the people all the time. They either disappoint those who want the (as advertised) adult only swim who then have to swim with children. Or they disappoint families giving no option to swim. I am biased but I think they made the right call. Sorry you have had your swim spoiled. Us too. We love a good swim. Flowers

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 26/08/2020 15:16

If you are in the UK it’s not exactly unprecedented to have bad weather is it. I think if the pool was closed due to maintenance or something then perhaps some flexibility would be needed but bad weather must be very common.

Laiste · 26/08/2020 15:23

Bloody annoying to turn up for an adult swim and find the pool full of kids.

Can you tell before you pay to get in? You would be able to at our local pool as the massive swimming pool windows look out onto the car park. If i saw the big pool full of kids i'd get back in the car! If not i'd be going back to the tills for a refund.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 26/08/2020 15:24

Do you own the swimming pool? It is there for anyone to use - of course YABU - maybe the pool management should move the "adults only" to the outdoor pool - they can cope better with the weather and temperatures than kids can. Or if you are so into "adult only" swimming go join a club somewhere-

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2020 15:25

YANBU the staff/advertising should make it clear.

You can't blame the families though as if they're allowed then they're allowed.

PacificOcean · 26/08/2020 15:26

But it would also be bloody annoying to turn up with kids and find no swimming was available at all.

SummerHouse · 26/08/2020 15:29

Yes Pacific we have lived that dream today. Still have my annoying swim suit on as a token reminder of our epic fail.

BowlerHatPowerHat · 26/08/2020 15:34

Did they rope off part of the pool so the adults could still swim uninterrupted?
