Adult only swimming

Shoxfordian · 26/08/2020 14:47

I'm a member of a gym which advertises adult only indoor swimming from 6am until 3pm. There is also an outdoor pool for children/family use all day.

Recently because of bad weather, they couldn't open the outdoor pool so they allowed all the noisy annoying children into the indoor pool during supposedly adult only time.

I have complained but they said its because the outside pool had to be closed. Don't see why this means my nice quiet swim has to be ruined by noisy kids.

You're lucky you get adult only swims! But I do feel your pain. Can you not just go and swim outside instead or do they close it? I love a good outdoor swim in the rain.

I'm a member of my local David Lloyd and they only do adult swim first thing on a morning for a couple of hours. I'd love a longer adult swim session. Our pool is typically full of kids and at some times kids are allowed both indoors and outdoors so there is no peace from them!

The outside pool was closed for everyone or I would happily have gone out there

I like the person asking me if I own the pool, obviously not because then I'd be the only one there

Yes lanes were roped off but it was really noisy

I agree with you OP.

I think if families are only allowed in the outdoor pool then it's fair to assume that they won't be able to swim on days when the weather means the outdoor pool isn't open.

It does seem a bit unfair that they are subject to the weather though, especially if they're paying a membership fee too - but I'd say they should still only be allowed to use the indoor pool during allocated times, rather than at any time if the weather is bad. It's impossible to swim when there are kids in a pool.

You have to pre-book at my pool. It's also a half hour drive away. I'd be annoyed if I arrived to find children in the pool.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 26/08/2020 16:00

Completely missing the point of the thread I know, but it's good to see there are some outdoor pools still in existence. There were plenty about when I was a child, but the closest ones to where I live are so far away (minimum 1.5 h drive) that it just isn't practical to use one.

Bring back the lido!

I'm at A DL with no outdoor pool. So there is always family swimming during the day. But also adult only times.

So it's normally adult only from opening until 10:30am , then family time, bit more adult only mid afternoon, then family, then adult from mid eve only.

They need to do something like that. Everyone has the opportunity to use the pool regardless of the weather,

Mollscroll · 26/08/2020 16:05

I see that that is annoying. However all our local authority pools are now adult-only all the time. There is literally no longer any local facility for children to swim and certainly not to play which is pretty extraordinary. So I would be inclined to suck this up - everyone is having to tolerate less than ideal circs at the moment.

Well...just as you would expect parents to be able to look at the weather outside and think "oh the outdoor pool is probably closed, let me check the website" you are equally able to do the same and expect that probably there will be some changes to the previous adult only session (if this happens frequently). I guess the saving grace is that they rope off half the pool so you still have dedicated lanes to swim (unless they're now very overcrowded).

The pool is the one being U though - if there is a change they should post it on their website, twitter, etc. "Because of bad weather the outdoor pool is closed today - family swim will now be from 10-11 and 2-3, adult only lanes 11.30-2 and 3.30-5" or something so you know in advance before showing up.

(I frequently do my lane swimming during the "family swim" session at my pool. They rope off 2 lanes for people like me, and if my DCs come along they can muck about on the other side of the rope for an hour while I swim laps. It is noisy, but once ploughing through 2km freestyle with a swim cap on I can't hear all that much anyway.)

If it’s adult only time and the open pool is closed then yes I agree that families should come when it is family time and adults should not have to deal with the children (that’s presumably why they went at that time so they don’t have to). If this is their policy, therefore likely to be repeated I would change gyms and make people aware on their Facebook page that this is their policy.

IndecentFeminist · 26/08/2020 16:15

think the weather is bad so the outdoor pool probably isn't open

Well, now you know you can also check the weather, and if the weather is bad anticipate that the outdoor pool may be closed and families may be indoors. That cuts both ways tbh.

dwiz8 · 26/08/2020 16:17

Yanbu

I would complain and ask them to make it clear maybe some new adult only times

Very unreasonable for them to advertise adult only swimming then just let loads of noisy kids in because the outdoor pool is closed

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 26/08/2020 16:33

Don't understand why they close it. The DL I'm a member of opens the outdoor pool year round in all weathers - have swum in the snow!

vanillandhoney · 26/08/2020 16:34

I think as they kept some lanes free for adult-only swimming that it's fine, really.

You say families should look at the weather and assume the outdoor pool is closed, but the same works for you - if the weather is bad, why didn't you assume the outdoor pool would be closed and so the indoor pool would be shared?

MinesAPintOfTea · 26/08/2020 16:46

We have the opposite. DL outdoor pool only open to children very rarely. But I was swimming out there (adult only) in the rain this morning
