Does it say how many they have sold?! Is it some weird niche fetish thing?!

AdoptAdaptImprove · 26/08/2020 14:04

It’s horrible, but handmade. That amount of money translates to just under £22, which, when you consider the cost of the yarn and the time taken to make it, doesn’t sound unreasonable to me if someone is making them as a business. If it takes, say, two hours to make and finish, and the yarn costs about £5 (given the number of colours probably a lot more) then the maker isn’t charging much hourly for their time and skill at all.

Whether or not anyone wants to buy it rather than kill it with fire is another matter, but the cost isn’t outrageous by any means.

AdobeWanKenobi · 26/08/2020 14:05

Huge collectors market for Popples, not sure what $40 AU translates to in Pounds but I imagine there is a lot of work in that.
People always seem to underestimate the cost of hand made items. Time and wool doesn't come cheaply.

UnfinishedSymphon · 26/08/2020 14:05

WTAF is it supposed to be?!

Put more succinctly that I could.
MaskingForIt · 26/08/2020 14:06

£22 only pays for around two hours skilled labour work, and there’s also the price of the yarn to consider.

You’re welcome to make your own or not buy it.

TitianaTitsling · 26/08/2020 14:06

Is that a Popple?

TitianaTitsling · 26/08/2020 14:08

Oops of course it is! Pic didn't load properly so I just saw the photos not text!

MaskingForIt · 26/08/2020 14:08

@AdobeWanKenobi not sure what $40 AU translates to in Pounds

It literally says £21.87 directly underneath the $39.99.

Potionqueen · 26/08/2020 14:09

Bet it comes alive at midnight and kills everyone in the house.........

FlumpetCrumpet · 26/08/2020 14:13

Is that an umbilical cord and placenta?

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 26/08/2020 14:15

Absolute shite.

There's obviously a market for it though.

Exactly. I sell handmade items from yarn (macrame) and honestly people want them for nothing. Larger wall hangings take hours and hours to make, metres and metres of yarn / cord but when people see the price tags they baulk. Sorry. I'm barely making minimum wage an hour when you cost it up, if you want something cheap it'll be mass produced and from China.
gobbynorthernbird · 26/08/2020 14:17

It's the hipster crochet equivalent of a blow-up doll. They're actually human sized.

Can only see the desktop sized picture, if I click on the photo then try and click back it always freezes my browser.
But thanks.

SockYarn · 26/08/2020 14:35

No it's not my taste but I can appreciate the time which it has taken to make. Plus the cost of the yarn. 2 to 3 hours work for £21 is less than minimum wage if you go for 3 hours to make and put together.

Feel free to get your crochet hook out and make one for yourself OP if you think you can do just as good a job. Nothing stopping you.

tillytoodles1 · 26/08/2020 14:36

Have you seen the postage cost? It's more than the goods.

SockYarn · 26/08/2020 14:38

Have you seen the postage cost? It's more than the goods.

Well yes, because it's coming from AUSTRALIA.

ReggieCat · 26/08/2020 14:38

Not something I'd buy but the price is still undervaluing the work and skills that go into hand-made.

I used to knit lace shawls to order but I gave up because people were offering the cost of the yarn plus £10 for something that would have taken over 40 hours to knit.

How many people are prepared to work for 25p an hour?

ElementalIllusion · 26/08/2020 14:39

A quick google suggests it’s supposed to be a crocheted version of one of these....

that this is a little... ambitious?
Alonelonelyloner · 26/08/2020 14:40

It's all levels of awful. Hold yourself back.

ImaSababa · 26/08/2020 14:41

Hideous. I'd pay double that for them NOT to send it to me.

LemonyFace · 26/08/2020 14:42

Things cost a lot in Australia from what I've seen. Maybe it's not expensive for over there.

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 26/08/2020 14:42

The ad title says it’s a Popple but something’s definitely gone wrong there

GeorgiaWeLoveYou · 26/08/2020 14:46

Hideous. I have seen countless business pages pop up on my Instagram recently with people selling handmade crafts for £££ when they can easily be made yourself for a fraction of that price. Yes, you're paying for the labour but it doesn't justify these unrealistic price points.
