Argument over hair extensions

Hello.
Been with boyfriend for a year and a half. Both are 26.

I bought some new hair extensions - I went for the cheaper option to see how I like them so they're synthetic but I absolutely love them and my parents and sisters have complimented me. They were originally a bit iffy about extensions but they really like them.

Backstory: i used to have long brunette hair past my boobs. However last year I started bleaching it myself. Every few months, I would keep bleaching and , as you can probably imagine, my hair began to get brittle and break off.

This means I had to cut it. But stupid me, kept bleaching it. So I had to cut it again to collar bone. My mum then commented on how burnt my hair was and how dry and when she smelt it, she could just smell a burnt smell.

I chopped it off to just above shoulders. I am quite good at cutting my own hair but clearly not at bleaching it.
I dyed it back brown.
Anyway, I wasn't used to seeing myself with shorter hair so I would just wear it in a bun non stop for the past month. 2 days ago, I noticed how thin it had got compared to my old, thick long wavy hair.

I got extensions and I feel so much happier and like myself. I've always had an opinion that as long as i'm happy with it then I don't care if other people think "urgh extensions".
These are halo extensions so theyre basically a headband kind of style so not damaging to the hair.

Anyway, showed boyfriend today and it was like I committed the worst crime.
I had been thinking about getting extensions for a while and he was against saying I should just let my hair grow. My opinion is I can have the best of both with halo hair extensions. It can grow whilst I cover up the thinness.

I have cut them so they're just above my boobs giving them a more natural look.

However, boyfriend thinks extensions are tatty and that I now look like a "typical girl". We had an argument as I said it makes me feel better and he said he doesn't get it because it's fake and not my real hair so really i'm lying.

I feel stupid now. I really like these extensions and feel 10000x prettier with my hair long.
I dont want to come across as tatty but I genuinely think they look nice :(

@hastingsmua1 sorry I must have misinterpreted!

I take it back I thought they were a brand Grin I'm going to order some though Blush

Throckmorton · 25/08/2020 22:28

Big red flag that you are dating a controlling abusive arsehole. Keep the hair; ditch the boyfriend

BoomBoomBoomCrash · 25/08/2020 22:29

@CrocodilesCry I just said "best of both" because i've heard clip ones can pull on the hair and I don't want to ruin my hair anymore than what it is whereas this is more of a headband thing (but it's really thin so you can't see) so it doesn't pull.

There are some tutorials on youtube which shows how the headband works but I found it easy :)

What normal man gives a fuck if his girlfriend wears extensions to make herself feel pretty? None that I've ever met... your body your business.

Sounds like an Incel who thinks women who dress up/wear makeup/ have extensions are whoring themselves out.

Gross

hastingsmua1 · 25/08/2020 22:33

@Bluntness100

Op, Hastings was answering my question I think.
I was, thank youSmile

Your hair looks really nice, OP! Can’t believe the extensions only cost £6. I’m tempted to order them just for fun!

Sorry but at £6 your boyfriend has absolutely nothing to complain about. It’s not like you’ve gone into debt or permanently altered anything. It takes seconds to take it out. If anything, he should be supportive aid anything that helps you feel more confident! Having damaged/thinning hair can wreak havoc on your self esteem.

AdoraBell · 25/08/2020 22:34

Has he ever had a tan? If so that is completely false. Also, shaving and cutting his hair, if he ever has, that isn’t natural so why does he do it?

I would not waste time with him, give him marching orders before you get more involved.

BoomBoomBoomCrash · 25/08/2020 22:37

@hastingsmua1 and he knows my esteem was knocked as I was wearing it up all the time and usually I never wear my hair up as I feel I look better with it down,
I bought loads of new clothes last month thinking that would boost my esteem but no matter what I wore I felt ugly.

I'm not saying short hair is ugly at all btw but I just don't suit it Blush.
I saw pictures of myself the other day and my hair was just so flat and nothing exciting about it at all which gave me the kick to buy the extensions.

As they're only £6 they probably won't last long but I know I like them on me now so I'd happily spend more next time or maybe spend £6 again if they last well Grin

I'm hoping he was just shocked that I actually got extensions but maybe by tomorrow he'll be different? We'll ser

My dad never liked mother wearing red nail polish... Its just a preference. Maybe he just hates the type of woman perceived on TV with the hair, trout pout, false eye lashes. Doesn't mean you shouldnt wear them, it's give and take.

BoomBoomBoomCrash · 25/08/2020 22:41

@GisAFag the thing is I don't have lash extensions, no plastic surgery, I don't wear false lases, never had my lips done (not that there's anything wrong with wanting those and none of my business what people do) so it's just the hair really and makeup and I love heeled boots and shoesGrin i'm not a nail person though tbh , that's one thing I've never been into, or bags

Strongswans · 25/08/2020 22:49

Be whoever you want to be, and look however you want to look, don't let anyone dictate it to you. Maybe he doesn't like the confidence you get from wearing them.

I used halo hair extensions after my hair broke and had to be cut short due to illness. It did wonders for me, I felt better and happier. No one guessed it was extensions. I ended up having extensions sewed in (think it was a weave) and my hair recovered well. It's now past my boobs and no extensions!

LadyLairdArgyll · 25/08/2020 22:52

you look great OP

Yeahnahmum · 25/08/2020 23:19

Just because ops boyfriend has an opinion doesn't make him mysogynistic... jeez.
That word is thrown around wayyyy to quickly on mn.

Good on ya op keep wearing them. Your bf will get used to them eventually:)

MawnyStannit · 25/08/2020 23:26

Keep the hair, ditch the bellend.

It's not that he doesn't like them it's that he's implying women who use enhancements are lying and 'tricking' people.

Quite misogynistic I think, especially as men were the ones making beauty an imperative

TempestHayes · 25/08/2020 23:44

Creepy controllingness.

What it is is that You Did a Thing. You didn't "ask him first" or seek permission or be forced to beg for it. It doesn't matter what it is - hair extensions, seeing a friend, getting a new job, buying a dress. He wants you to know that all things have to be run by him first. And if you don't, you'll be punished with this bullshit negativity.

You look like "a typical girl"? You likely look great. And he doesn't like it.

It's him desperately scrabbling for a fight to look 'in control'.

chickenyhead · 25/08/2020 23:48

he can obviously see that OP is happier and feels more like herself. She looks and feels good.

He finds this threatening. So he attacks her for being fake. He could simply have appreciated that she felt happier. Its her hair, not his decision.

LadyLairdArgyll · 26/08/2020 08:53

OP do you trust the Halo extension thing? does it feel secure etc

BoomBoomBoomCrash · 26/08/2020 09:59

Yes it does', I havent put bobby pins in but i suppose you could secure it with pins if worried :) it feels light on my head aswell

Happynow001 · 26/08/2020 10:18

OP it's your hair and your business. Your BF should keep his negging opinions to himself.

The only thing I'd say to you is to have a few professional treatments on your own hair to nourish and rebuild its natural strength and looks now that hairdressers are open, if you can.

If they have a steamer (looks like a hairdryer on a stand but sends out warm steam onto the hair being reconditioned) even better.

In between appointments condition your own hair at home (there are so many salon-quality treatments available now). Once you have the treatment/hair mask etc on put on a thin shower cap (cheap from Superdrug), wrap your head in a towel for 30mins or so whilst you get on with other things. Rinse in lukewarm water until it's all gone. Good luck. 🌹

cultkid · 26/08/2020 12:55

LadyLairdArgyll · 26/08/2020 20:43

oh wow Cultkid what exactly have you had done? your hair looks wonderful 🌺

cultkid · 26/08/2020 21:03

@LadyLairdArgyll

I have used raptures for years but this time ive had two packets of slim line Beauty works 16" tapes in

I am in love with them aren't they amazing

It's the thinness of my hair which has brought me down over the years.

The OP should have a boyfriend who supports her not drags her down

thegreenlight · 26/08/2020 21:09

When you feel ready to graduate to better quality real hair halo extensions, flixy extensions are amazing - I have worn them for over a year, they are amazing quality and even survived being worn on rides in Disneyworld! They come in different lengths so you are not wasting money on hair you plan to cut. I wear the 12”. My hair fell out after pregnancy and never returned to its original thickness and this improves my confidence no end.

thegreenlight · 26/08/2020 21:10

Oh - and flixy extensions have two small side clips to keep them in place so no worries about them going anywhere!
