To wonder where Gavin Williamsons resignation is?

They can't put all the blame on Sally Collier surely? The Guardian suggests the select committee were warned in advance but chose to take no action. That rests with Gavin Williamson imo.

It's not forthcoming.

His should not be, he should be sacked and the resignation should be from the Prime Minister.

Riv · 25/08/2020 18:49

I think they are holding it in reserve so that they have a scapegoat for the next education crisis (there’s definitely at least one coming in the near future).

InfiniteSheldon · 25/08/2020 18:49

Very childish all these wails and whines for resignations

RoadworksAgain · 25/08/2020 18:51

Yes, this.

The80sweregreat · 25/08/2020 18:54

I did read and see on the news this morning his up for an award for ' best MP' or something !
Even dh was shocked and he is tory supporter.
I guess the lady that has resigned was probably told to and GW is holding on for a while till the children go back in England and Wales.

itsgettingweird · 25/08/2020 18:55

Somehow he instead got voted into the list of candidates for minister of the year HmmConfused

StopGo · 25/08/2020 18:56

Same place as Dominic Cummins et al

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/08/2020 18:59

Oh, he did the honourable thing and resigned last week.
Sadly the postman was unable to locate Boris Johnson's tent.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/08/2020 19:01

Postman currently on his way to Barnard Castle to check his eyesight.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 25/08/2020 19:01

I think they are waiting until schools reopen so that a new education sec does not have to face that immediately in a new role. I think he'll be gone in September but not until the end of the month.

KenAdams · 25/08/2020 19:02

@InfiniteSheldon how is it childish to ask that a government minister to take responsibility for his actions?

Why would he resign? This cabinet doesn’t do firings or resignations. They were voted in to see through Brexit, not deal with pandemics.

Unescorted · 25/08/2020 19:04

They are keeping him warm for the back to school chaos created to mask the Oh Fuck haven't negotiated a Brexit Deal and we have12 weeks left moment.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 25/08/2020 19:09

Needs to be sacked ASAP - that level of incompetency is unforgivable! Being on holiday for results days shows the amount he cares about education.

And whilst he is being sacked the muppets at the DfE need to be sorted out as well. They have lost all respect.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 25/08/2020 19:11

The BTEC students are getting their results this week.

External candidates - who knows for those poor souls.

ilovesooty · 25/08/2020 19:30

I suspect he's offered it and it's been refused.

The80sweregreat · 25/08/2020 19:38

He looked a bit sheepish on the tv. Boris seems to like people that mess up so his probably safe for a while yet!

Peregrina · 25/08/2020 19:41

They were voted in to see through Brexit, not deal with pandemics.

They were voted in to govern the country, and that involves taking what comes along and dealing with it. But this lot don't do resignations - that is too old fashioned and honourable. They do lying and cheating, following the example set by their Prime Minister.

titchy · 25/08/2020 19:49

This...
Skysblue · 25/08/2020 23:08

Like Cummings, Williamson won’t resign and won’t be made to because he’s loyal to Boris and, in this petty little dictatorship of incompetent clowns, that’s all that matters.

TheMarzipanDildo · 25/08/2020 23:22

“Why would he resign? This cabinet doesn’t do firings or resignations. They were voted in to see through Brexit, not deal with pandemics.”

That’s not how it works! They were voted in to govern the country, which amounts to a lot more than Brexit.

Historically, many (most?) governments have lost power because they were deemed incompetent when dealing with unforeseen crises. It’s the way our system works, and if you ask me that’s a good thing. It means governments usually try quite hard not to fuck up (although they often do eventually!)

It's not how it's supposed to work but it is what has happened nonetheless. The Tories had one message during the election campaign - Get Brexit Done, and sadly that is what many people voted for. All those Labour voters in the 'Red Wall' went for it and they're about to get the result.

And I think the final paragraph is ridiculously naive, though I hope I'm wrong. Again, that's what's happened in the past but this government are obviously going to try and use covid to mask the fact that their Brexit project was/is a disaster for the vast majority of people in this country, whether they voted for the fucking thing or not. Who knows whether they'll get away with it but while I know of polls saying more people would now like to stay in the EU, I also know an awful lot of people have got more and more entrenched in their views and may therefore be willing to let the government off pretty much anything. Whether that'll change when the supermarket shelves are empty and Kent is one big lorry park remains to be seen.

noblegiraffe · 25/08/2020 23:48

The only thing Gavin took the time out to do properly during the A-level fiasco was a professional photo shoot with a whip and notebook.

This was to remind Boris that Gav used to be Chief Whip and therefore knows where all the bodies are buried. An implied threat that if Boris sacks him, he’ll drop him in it.

No honour.

Peregrina · 26/08/2020 08:45

What could Boris be dropped in for? Not a reveal about him having a bit on the side when he's supposed to be happily married - that doesn't need explaining. Not being a liar, because that is a matter of record, and I think they are able to call him a liar in Parliament, because of that. Not threatening to beat a journalist up, wasting public money; both been there, done that. In the pocket of Putin? He may not be, but Cummings probably is, and it doesn't seem to have done him any harm. I can't think of anything which could implicate him.

HijabiVenus · 26/08/2020 08:49

How many other people - people on here would resign if they made an error, or missed scrutinissing some elses error?

If we had a hire and fire at will, like some states in the US they it would be understandable but the constant harping demand to resign (aimed only at high ranking figures) is pathetic.

Binman did not empty my bin last night - resign or get sacked! No, its stupid.
