To actually feel depressed with the hot weather?

Stackys · 24/08/2020 07:09

I’m really struggling this year. It’s been consistently hot a humid for months now. I don’t sleep when it’s hot so I’ve been getting up at 4am after lying for hours feeling sticky and horrible.

I can’t take my dog out in this weather either. I can’t do anything.

I’m at work today and I’ve been awake since 3am. I looked at the weather app just now and seen it’s going to be another hot day and I honestly thought I was going to start crying. I’m just so tired. Maybe it’s generalised depression being highlighted by the heat but I’m just really struggling with it now.

AIBU to look forward to winter??

I have portable air con in my room and I have still been putting it on at night for a couple of hours to cool down (as opposed to it being on 24/7 when it was over 30!). It’s around 18 here so I do get what you’re saying. I’m still in t shirt and shorts as it’s nowhere near cool enough yet for me. But I just tell myself that at least it’s not 30+ and hopefully those days are behind us for this year.

BlackWaveComing · 25/08/2020 07:56

I live in AU. Very hot, very humid over spring/summer.

I have reverse SAD. Yes, I was surprised it exists too! Basically very low mood through summer.

I take Vit D through winter to prepare ('cos indoors most of summer due to heat), try to do what I can early morning, and evening, rest, hydrate. It's awful.

Having said that, our temps swing from about 28C to 44C.

HeartZone · 25/08/2020 08:00

Are you from NI OP?!

I know over there anything around 18 degrees and they’re all breaking out in a sweat!

vanillandhoney · 25/08/2020 08:15

Why can't you walk your dog in 18 degree weather? I mean, I sympathise if you're struggling but your dog still needs a walk.

If you don't feel you can take them then please consider hiring a dog walker or something so they still get out.

Toilenstripes · 25/08/2020 08:21

For anyone who thinks 18 is even warm, there’s always Lerwick.

sonjadog · 25/08/2020 14:30

18 degrees is not hot, so there must be some other issues going on here. Do you have a fan in your bedroom? Is there a way you can open windows and doors to get a breeze through? I can understand that if your home is in full sunshine all day it can get hot inside, but at 18 degrees it should be manageable.

Also, you can take your dog for a walk as normal. Dogs tolerate 18 degree heat just fine. Take some water and a bowl if you think your dog might need it, otherwise they should be able to wait until they get home at that temperature.

MrsSpookyM · 25/08/2020 14:54

Are you Scottish OP?

Nixen · 25/08/2020 14:57

18 is not hot 😂
Just a tip OP, never move down south

Aragog · 25/08/2020 14:58

18 degrees is on now way hot. It isn't even warm really. I'd need a cardi on in most situations at 18 degrees!

And today it is cold here. It is pouring with rain, grey and wet with little let up.

It hasn't been t shirt warm where I am for a while now.

Aragog · 25/08/2020 15:00

I mean today humidity its probably high - there is certainly a lot of wetness in the air what with the torrential downpours!

user1497787065 · 25/08/2020 20:48

Interesting the number of people saying that 18 degrees is not hot.
Maybe not to them but to
some of us it is. I don't consider 6 or
8 degrees to be cold but I'm sure a lot of you do. In the workplace it away so appears to be those who feel cold who control the heating system. My line is always that I can't necessarily take anything more off (I either wear a shirt or in the winter I may wear a camisole and cardigan. Those feeling
Cold can always throw on my layers.

speakout · 25/08/2020 20:58

I don't think 18 degrees is hot at all.
Quite comfortable- I would find it a little cold in shorts unless I was doing something active.

MintChocAddict · 25/08/2020 21:01

Come to Scotland. We're all in cosy socks!

WhyIsItSoHardToPickAUsername · 25/08/2020 21:05

18 really isn't hot at all op. If you're really feeling unbearably hot then it could be something to do with hormones or your thyroid.

WhyIsItSoHardToPickAUsername · 25/08/2020 21:07

And our dog has no problem waking in 18 degrees.
Once it gets into the 20s we'd avoid the hottest part of the day as he's black and only 6mo. 18 isn't an issue for any dog I'd think.

Witchend · 25/08/2020 21:30

18 degrees! I thought you were somewhere double that.
I'd say that was a chilly summer day.

Fairyliz · 25/08/2020 21:41

Every winter there is a thread on MN about the ideal temperature for the heating and the general consensus is that 20c is about right and that's when people are presumably wearing winter clothing.

That suggests that if you are really that hot at 18c there may be a medical problem. Are you able to see a GP?

1Morewineplease · 25/08/2020 21:44

It’s cardi weather here in Kent.

LottieDot · 25/08/2020 21:49

I'm not far from you op and had to put the heating on today Confused! I do prefer warmer weather though!

chomalungma · 25/08/2020 22:00

If you think 18c is hot, then what did you think of the 30c temperatures?

18 degrees is a reasonable room temperature.

chomalungma · 25/08/2020 22:02

I don't consider 6 or 8 degrees to be cold but I'm sure a lot of you do

What temperature do you consider to be cold? (In the UK)

Government guidance suggests a minimum of 16C in an office

www.gov.uk/workplace-temperatures

Ginfordinner · 25/08/2020 22:50

I don't consider 6 or 8 degrees to be cold but I'm sure a lot of you do

You must save an awful lot on heating bills in the winter then. I would say that the vast majority of the population would consider 6 or 8 degrees to be cold. To me that is winter coat weather.

Cold can always throw on more layers.

It doesn't work like that. If the ambient temperature is so cold that I need to wear several layers, adding another one doesn't make any difference. If my extremities are cold I am utterly miserable and just can't function.

One of the joys of working from home is that I have been able to work in my south facing office at home and not be subject to the arctic air conditioning we had at work. Every summer before now I have had to wear a cardigan in the office because it was too cold.

LizzyMac40 · 25/08/2020 23:27

What hit weather? It’s freezing in the Borders and pouring with rain thanks to storm Francis!

LizzyMac40 · 25/08/2020 23:28

Hot not hit.

Passthecake30 · 26/08/2020 07:29

“What temperature do you consider to be cold? (In the UK)”

I consider 0c to be cold...generally when the car is iced up in the morning.
