To actually feel depressed with the hot weather?

Stackys · 24/08/2020 07:09

I’m really struggling this year. It’s been consistently hot a humid for months now. I don’t sleep when it’s hot so I’ve been getting up at 4am after lying for hours feeling sticky and horrible.

I can’t take my dog out in this weather either. I can’t do anything.

I’m at work today and I’ve been awake since 3am. I looked at the weather app just now and seen it’s going to be another hot day and I honestly thought I was going to start crying. I’m just so tired. Maybe it’s generalised depression being highlighted by the heat but I’m just really struggling with it now.

AIBU to look forward to winter??

Also, why can’t you walk you dog? I’m taking mine out now, but even if it was 18 degrees I would still walk them - that’s not so hot you shouldn’t walk them.

@Teddy1970

I find the humidity of the UK makes it feel so much hotter, for example I lived in the UAE for a short while it was well over 40c every single day, yes that's very hot but it was dry heat, and that's the difference, in the UK if it gets above 25c I struggle because it feels like I'm suffocating in a damp hot blanket, it's grim.
This year it was so humid my washing powder clumped up.
Ginfordinner · 24/08/2020 07:52

I'm in South Yorkshire, and we have had a few hot and humid days, but it hasn't been continuously hot and humid. East Yorkshire must have its own microclimate. I realise that East Yorkshire is at a lower altitude and much flatter than where I am, so it probably is a degree or two warmer.

In the grand scheme of things 18 degrees is warm not hot to most people.

Jojoanna · 24/08/2020 07:55

Humidity is 91% today where I am

Teddy1970 · 24/08/2020 07:58

InDeoEstMeaFiducia that doesn't surprise me.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 24/08/2020 08:00

18° is warm for night time and it has bee n humid at night for a while now. Seems to peak in the early hours at 90 odd. So I can see why you feel too warm in bed. But 18° really isn't bad during the day. Can you run a fan in the bedroom if you cant afford aircon atm? Also a mister to spray a little water on your face and neck can help.
I'm with you though, roll on winter

deplorabelle · 24/08/2020 08:04

I really struggle with the heat. In fact I think I get a but of seasonal affective disorder but in the summer. I feel awful every spring as the weather heats up and I know I've got a whole summer to get through. Very fair skinned so the constant suncream application gets me down too.

What has helped me is finding things to like about summer. I've always loved the long days and I now grow quite a lot of fruit and veg so appreciate the summer weather for them. I also have an Aircon unit in our home office so there is some escape from the overheated feeling.

I love it when the autumn chill comes back in the air though. Last night I went out in shorts and t-shirt to do something in the garden and came back in properly cold. (SE England) so relief is on the way

orangejuicer · 24/08/2020 08:05

I take it back, sorry gin.

So as above 18c isnt hot, it's about right I think. Just hang in there OP, the temps are dropping and autumn is almost here Grin

TwentyViginti · 24/08/2020 08:06

Agree it's the humidity in the UK that makes Summer so stifling.

ifitmakesyouhappy · 24/08/2020 08:23

I know what you mean OP. I hate hot weather, I love nothing more than the cold and rain! The past few days it's been 14 - 16 Celsius here and like you, it's not the heat per se but the humidity. I get out of a shower to get ready and am immediately sticky again. I feel your pain.

Only thing that's helped me is sitting in front of a fan.

Ginfordinner · 24/08/2020 14:30

It's currently a very breezy 18 degrees, cloudy with sunny intervals and 47% humidity.

I'm wearing a cardigan.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 24/08/2020 14:36

Confused I really hate the heat. I'm one of those moaning when it's 28 degrees here and we're all sweating our bits off.
18 is not hot. Its not even remotely close to hot. My large black lab has no problem walking in 18 degrees. I think this post is a little dramatic.

recklessruby · 24/08/2020 14:39

I m in SE England and it has been unbearable. 38c nearly killed me. I also have fair skin and overheat very easily and get migraines.
But 18c is nice, its that sort of temperature here and I m comfortable.
I will definitely buy those air con units for next summer though. Sleeping all sweaty and sticky is horrible and fans just seem to blow the hot air around.

AnotherDFSsale · 24/08/2020 14:40

In case anyone cares, if you have an iphone you can press and hold the zero button down and select the degree symbol. 20°c here in S Yorks!

Teddy1970 · 24/08/2020 22:23

Agreed recklessruby combined with the humidity at 38C it was really awful, the nights weren't any better, it was 24C at 11pm! I felt like I was in a jungle in Thailand, not rural West Sussex!

MissMaple82 · 24/08/2020 22:27

I think its still hot, ive been struggling too. Its not nice weather, its horrible. I feel your pain also, not everybody can handle heat. Damn climate change! Its only going to get worse!!

CatsEyeCaz · 24/08/2020 22:32

East Yorkshire here too. I think we've only had two days of summer.

DrCoconut · 24/08/2020 22:32

I'm just south of you and I can count the number of hot days we've had here on my fingers. There's been loads of wind and rain and mediocre temperatures. Same as last year. And now it looks as if autumn is setting in early. I'm really noticing the days shortening too. I'd love a proper summer where you can pack away the hoodies and jeans for a few months and know you'll be ok with your shorts and nice dresses.

Fishyfinger · 24/08/2020 22:35

I voted YABU

Yes, it was hot for a couple of weeks - but just pleasant after that. (also in Yorkshire)

I get hot and moan about it when it's over 28C but really I try to enjoy it before winter hits and we have months and months and months of wind, rain and greyness.

Make the most of summer while it is here.

FlowersAreBeautiful · 24/08/2020 22:39

It's 22 degrees today in the Midlands. It's been averaging 20 degrees or more (usually 23) since April, except for the odd few days of rain and colder weather. So 6 months of hot weather. The humidity is awful I'd like to get through a day not sweating. I'm originally from the north and on the coast so I struggle with the humidity in the Midlands. Just a few degrees hotter daily but I can feel the difference. Have actually considered moving back up north as the last few years have been so unbearably hot

ouch321 · 24/08/2020 22:39

In London.
The temp has dropped a bit but it still feels so heavy in the atmosphere and I swear it's contributing to my headaches.
What we need here is a proper thunderstorm overnight to clear it.

user1497787065 · 25/08/2020 06:34

Absolutely with you. I can't wait for the better weather to arrive! Hate the hot weather just makes me so grumpy. Broken sleep night after night. I can't wait for winter, hopefully a proper one with consistent cold weather not just a few frosty mornings. I felt a frisson of joy yesterday putting away some garden furniture and the barbecue.

Ginfordinner · 25/08/2020 07:35

This is the next week's weather where I live Sad

To actually feel depressed with the hot weather?
Passthecake30 · 25/08/2020 07:44

I voted YABU. Dreary cold dark days are depressing. When it’s warm and sunny, there’s so much more I can do, even just having the windows thrown up and back door open, letting in the fresh air and outside sounds (birds!) makes me happy.
Do you have health issues (Overweight, thyroid, menopause?) as 18c isn’t hot. I start to waiver in the early 30c’s. 26c and sunny is my ideal.

mogloveseggs · 25/08/2020 07:49

Yanbu.
Anything over 18 and I'm dreadful.
Yesterday was fresh and cool in the morning and I felt so invigorated. Here's hoping for a cool and bright autumn and no September heatwave
