AIBU to think DH's dream home location doesn't exist?

DH has long wanted to live by the sea/water. He grew up near the sea and is desperate for DS to have the same activities available to him (paddle boarding, surfing, beach walks etc)

We were all set to do it this year but seeing the crowds packed into beaches has really put me off. Don't get me wrong, I know tourist spots are obviously busy but the behaviour of people just seems to have gone into overdrive.

DH is convinced we can find somewhere on the coast around the south/south east that won't be rammed like Brighton or Bournemouth in summer and where we can find a four bedroom for around 400k.

I think he's living in a Dreamworld. We aren't tied to anywhere for work as we both work remotely and will continue to be working remotely. obviously want a good school for DS when he's old enough but don't mind somewhere quiet with not much going on in terms of shops, pubs - just one or two of each for convenience would be fine.

I just can't see there being a coastline which doesn't have loads of visitors as soon as the weather is nice, where we can actually afford.

We've had a look on Rightmove but because we can pretty much go anywhere, it's a broad spectrum to search and I think we need to narrow it down a bit.

DH is just desperate to move I think (another issue is I don't think our house will sell, it needs a lot of work but he wants to try and take advantage of the stamp duty holiday)

Am I being a grump? Or realistic?! I feel like if it existed we would have been able to find some houses by now

There are certainly places in Devon that would fit your criteria.

ZaraW · 23/08/2020 17:37

Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are beautiful. Busy in summer but quieter than Scarborough.

Putmynewshoeson · 23/08/2020 17:38

Do you have any suggestions? I'll have a look

I think the problem is DH doesn't seem keen on an up and coming area, but I've tried to explain if he wants established seaside it's probably going to be busy and expensive!

You can get a small 3/4 bed in Brighton for £400k but in not particularly nice areas - look at Woodingdean (safe but boring, short drive to the sea, but sea views from most of it) or Whitehawk (closer to the sea but a bit dodgy.

Cross post thank you

Broadstairs?

toastmeahotcrossbun · 23/08/2020 17:41

I was going to say Broadstairs too!

Probably not for everyone but it shows it is possible. FYI Woolacoombe is considered to be one of the best beaches in the UK. It would be heaving in Summer but the beaches around there are huge.

Bookofdead · 23/08/2020 17:41

Norfolk? You can get a nice 3/4 bed house in a small, unspoilt seaside village for £400k. You’re also not far from the Norfolk broads either a lot of the time. Places like Happisburgh, Sea Palling, Wells next the sea, Holkham etc

BeBesideTheSea · 23/08/2020 17:43

Even on the Bank Holiday when Bournemouth was rammed, beaches only a mile away had only a handful of people on them

user32723 · 23/08/2020 17:43

Why South, if you can relocate anywhere then there are loads of northern beach towns where you could get significantly more for your money and excellent schools? Or what about South Wales, the Gower peninsula has amazing beaches.

SarahBellam · 23/08/2020 17:43

There are plenty of places in the New Forest that have what you’d like, but you’d be looking at double your budget.

travailtotravel · 23/08/2020 17:44

It might be helpful to consider area first. The coast is huge. What are the key criteria. Will you have to consider family visiting and distance? Occasional visits to a work base of some kind? Potential alternative options for work?

Gancanny · 23/08/2020 17:45

Would you consider moving North for the right house/area? Northumberland has miles of beautiful coastline, both built-up and rural, and your budget would go pretty far.

Thunderbolted · 23/08/2020 17:45

Robin Hood's Bay is currently absolutely packed. Not very relaxing. Also not on the south coast!

Ishihtzuknot · 23/08/2020 17:49

Margate or Herne bay

MrsWooster · 23/08/2020 17:50

You could live in a stunning beachside place mortgage free if you were prepared to leave the south...

BlueJava · 23/08/2020 17:51

So if he's sure his dream home exists why not ask him to find a few places and then have a weekend away to see them? I am a little confused why you'd fuss after him trying to find suitable locations if you think they don't exist - but he does.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 23/08/2020 17:53

Bognor Regis.

Gancanny · 23/08/2020 17:54

Whitley Bay/Cullercoats/Tynemouth are very sought after in North Tyneside, you could live right on the seafront for £400,000

Putmynewshoeson · 23/08/2020 17:54

I'm not trying to fuss I think I'm trying to prove I'm right 😆

We want to stay south because we have family and friends here.

He's found some places but theyre over our budget and I don't want to borrow the max amount we can.

Folkestone

Didthatreallyhappen2 · 23/08/2020 17:57

Northumberland is breathtaking with miles of golden sands. A lot is an AONB. I know it's not where you were thinking of, but if you work remotely does it really matter?

Lalotai47 · 23/08/2020 17:57

South Hams. Try Wembury. Or just over the border into Cornwall. Looe? Or maybe Brixham.
