TDGH1234ANON · 23/08/2020 15:24

There's enough debate how about a vote?
No = YABU
Yes = YANBU

If numbers are increasing in area if school yes

If not no

RedCatBlueCat · 23/08/2020 15:39

If students or staff want masks/visors etc, they should be able to wear them. But I dont think they should be compulsory.

Lockheart · 23/08/2020 16:00

This is not what the AIBU voting system is for.

cologne4711 · 23/08/2020 16:07

Not in lessons (unless they want to) but around school/college, yes. And on school buses, they may not technically be "public" but they are definitely collective transport and should be covered. And of course wearing them properly, not messing about with them on their chins.

Teachers and other school staff should be able to opt for visor or mask if they want to.

Mistressiggi · 23/08/2020 16:08

The problem with it being allowed, but not mandatory, is that it doesn't really offer protection if two people out of 30 are doing it.

millymollymoomoo · 23/08/2020 16:42

I think masks in schools will spread things more easily. Constant on/off and touching of them. I do not want my kids wearing them at school and won’t accept this ‘normal’
so for that YABU ( If it’s YABU that they should be worn)

TDGH1234ANON · 23/08/2020 16:45

@millymollymoomoo fair enough everyone's entitled to their opinion. This is safe place for just voting, giving your reasons but no one trying to win you over (hopefully). I'm on the other side of the fence but not going to convince you etc.

OP posts:
Idontbelieveit12 · 23/08/2020 16:45

Definitely not, for the same reasons as millymollymoomoo

millymollymoomoo · 23/08/2020 16:48

Not trying to win anyone over
I voted and gave explanation as to that vote

willotree · 23/08/2020 16:51

Maybe in corridors and moving through the school where it can get crowded

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 23/08/2020 16:52

Definitely yes.
Do what it takes.
I'm in Italy, we're used to them and are kind of presuming they'll need to be worn at least in the corridors etc at school in September. All of the kids I teach are just glad we'll all (hopefully) be in class rather than online.

EmilyDickinson · 23/08/2020 16:53

The WHO recommends that age 12 and over wear masks in the same way that adults do to reduce transmission. I remember what happened the last time the U.K. ignored WHO advice. The evidence seems to be that masks reduce transmission so wearing them is in the interests of pupils (keeps schools open, teachers at work and education uninterrupted) and staff (reduces the chance of serious illness).

hennybeans · 23/08/2020 17:43

I would have said yes they should wear masks up until a few days ago. Now I'm not sure.

We went to a shopping centre yesterday for about two hours. That's the longest I've had a mask on and actually it was quite uncomfortable and hot. The shopping centre was a bit noisy and my DC could only hear and understand me if I came right up to their face to speak ( ok with my own DC, but not what you want to happen in school). We ended up just getting what we needed, school shoes and a few bits of clothing, and left early.

I know we all know masks are hot and uncomfortable, but now that I've tried wearing them for more than ten minutes, I am just not sure teenagers will wear them successfully. I'm not sure what the answer is.

My DC will be taking the school bus and I would love to see them mandatory in the school bus however. I think that's short amount of time is reasonable.

TDGH1234ANON · 25/08/2020 08:57

Anymore want to vote?

No because what's going to happen to the children with sensory issues? Will they be exempt? If they aren't it's discrimination. If they are exempt then it's pointless as surely it's only going to work if most children comply.

Laaalaaaa · 25/08/2020 10:32

Mandatory in Scotland from next week - why can’t she just implement immediately. Well done nippy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

CanIBeGingerSpice · 25/08/2020 10:36

I take it you are watching This Morning!

CantThinkOfAName92 · 25/08/2020 10:37

Re children with sensory issues.... Surely the same way herd immunity helps those who cannot be vaccinated. Surely if enough people wear masks then the DC who can't wear them will be a bit protected.

I'd be happy for my DC to wear masks, they don't seem to mind whenever we wear them shopping or whatever. I've just asked 12 yr old and he says he'd wear one.

ShawshanksRedemption · 25/08/2020 11:00

In lessons, no. My kids school, and my own school, have planned that no other class or year group are in the same corridor at the same time so no masks needed there either. However if the layout of the school means that pupils will be in any shared space at the same time, then yes.

user1471517900 · 25/08/2020 11:43

Weird stick to bash Sturgeon with.... "this is a good idea but she hasn't implemented it immediately with no warning!"

Considering it's yet another change of a fast moving, changing environment for kids and teachers to get to grips with, a week seems reasonable.

IwishIwasyoda · 25/08/2020 11:46

Nicola Sturgeon does not wear glasses. She has no idea of the misery of wearing glasses and face masks and the fact you cannot fucking see for half the time. Visors should be an acceptable alternative

IwishIwasyoda · 25/08/2020 11:47

And don't give me that shite about issues, nose wires, tape - none of it actually works.

IfNotNow123 · 25/08/2020 11:50

I voted No. My kids school has also planned staggered starts, different entrances/ times for year groups for breaks etc, no assembly no lockers, younger groups on one room all day. It seems very orderly.
I don't think breathing into a bit of cotton all day and touching it all the time is going to help anything, and yes you do need to get closer to people to hear with a mask on.

Laaalaaaa · 25/08/2020 11:50

She’s quick enough to implement immediately on other things though. So yeah, I will ‘bash’ her. It’s hardly something with no warning, it’s been mooted since before schools went back. The woman is a joke.
IfNotNow123 · 25/08/2020 11:51

Almost all kids here walk, cycle or get driven to school, there's no decent public transport and no school bus do the transport not an issue.
