To get the rage about home decor trends...

I've just moved house and have been looking online for style inspiration. But I'm just getting so tired of seeing the same thing everywhere. It's not that it doesn't look good, it's just that it's done to death.

Typically you will have a grey room, with throws artfully draped over the arm of the sofa. The furniture will be all white. There will be a floor lamp, probably tripod style. Candles will adorn the shelves, along with multiple house plants. On the pouffe, there will be a pretty tray, with two more of the following: a candle, a small vase, a book, some pretty cups. Hanging on the wall or on a shelf somewhere will be a framed print of some inspirational saying - possibly 'she said she could, so she did' or just a single word, like 'family' or 'love' or 'home'. Other artwork or mirrors will be placed on shelves and will lean against the wall, rather than being flat against them.

I'm not knocking any of this. I just yearn for something different.

I’m a big believer in if you buy things you love and find a place for them rather than by things to fit a trend or location then you end up with a space that’s perfect for you.

This is how I’ve always decorated - I post photos of my interiors on Instagram and have quite a few followers so guess other people like that approach too.

BluebellsGreenbells · 22/08/2020 00:14

OP just buy stuff you like and love! It isn’t that hard

OP - why does every shop only sell the same stuff
PP - Just buy what you like

Seriously if you don’t like the gray trend there isn’t anything else - the whole point of the post

And to the PP I’ve seen those dark plum sofas, it’s not the right sort of purple. Far too dark.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 22/08/2020 01:42

These days you can get any colour sofa in any style you want, this isn’t the 1980’s! We literally have the world as a shop and are spoilt for choice compared to how it was years ago, all at the click of a button, it’s really not hard to find non grey items.

catpoooffender · 22/08/2020 08:44

To those saying 'just get what you like, why are you worried about trends?' Again, I'm not looking to follow trends, I was just looking for some inspiration. I'm not very experienced in home decor, and thus I don't really know what style I like, hence the research!

Having started looking at Instagram instead of Pinterest, and following some of the recommended accounts, I'm finding a much broader range of styles. 👍🏻👍🏻

@catpoooffender sorry I had wine last night and wasn’t really helpful. Try the likes of made.com for inspiration. Plus if you like certain artists art work, I tend to purchase the prints and then take them to a local framer to get them framed in certain styles to suit whatever room it’ll go in.

Zhampagne · 22/08/2020 09:24

If you are a member of your local library then there may be an app that you can use with your membership card to access digital magazines for free, in which case there are still plenty of interiors magazines around. I like Ideal Home (more realistic) and Elle Deco (more aspirational!).

bridgetreilly · 22/08/2020 09:25

Getting ‘the rage’ about how other people choose to decorate their houses? Yup, YABU.

attillathenun · 22/08/2020 09:36

I hear you OP, current trends are very drab! There’s a house for sale on our estate and it’s ALL grey, even the kitchen units are grey gloss. Just looks so zzzzz and cold. Any particular colours you like? We mostly have sandy colours, golds and greens in the living areas which is warm but calming. If you go for neutral colours as a base you can jazz it up with bright and bold coloured accessories

EvilPea · 22/08/2020 09:40

If anyone dares to tell me my houseplants are out of fashion I will poke them in the eye with an aloe Vera and tell them to get out.

80sMum · 22/08/2020 09:42

There is no grey in my house and never will be! I find it such an utterly grim and depressing colour. No matter how it's dressed up and accessorised, it's still grey and dull, like a disappointingly cloudy afternoon.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/08/2020 10:08

I actually find it quite hard to find things I like in the colours and styles I like :(

Gingerfish91 · 22/08/2020 10:13

I got her carpets years ago and the carpet fitter told me they hardly sell anymore then everyone got grey 😕.

I’m quite boring, all my walls are white but I can then add any colour I want in the rooms,

My pet hates are mirrored furniture, crushed velvet and one wall papered in hideous, flowery wallpaper.

Karcheer · 22/08/2020 11:23

I really don't get the trend for Plastic plants - im with you, all my plants are real and i love them.
Jux · 22/08/2020 13:30

I just want shelf after shelf of books. Everywhere. Every wall shelved.

Laiste · 22/08/2020 17:11

@SchnitzelVon Thank you for coming back on to do that link. That house is lovely. The kitchen and the bathroom particularly interest me as we're trying to place a roll top bath and our floor in the kitchen will be similar to that house and i'm all at sea with what worktops to go for.

Last night i nearly drove myself cross eyed googling pics of stair cases and spindle choices and stripped wood/painted wood/full carpet/part runner/stripes/plain or a combination of the whole bloody lot!

We've spent today pulling a wall down at the top of the stairs to let more light up/down. I've never been so filthy and knackered in my life. Right now i'm just grateful to be able to actually walk up the stairs without shoveling Grin

RowboatsinDisguise · 22/08/2020 17:14

I fucking hate grey and silver. Throw in a velvet sofa, a shaggy rug, and some jewel toned accents... Bleugh. Sorry, it’s all just so Mrs Hinch. It’s like no one has any imagination.

EvilPea · 22/08/2020 18:08

@karcheer
Yes! The plastic ones are Just dust collectors.
My real ones I get really attached to and talk to Blush

sst1234 · 22/08/2020 18:45

I always wonder why there are so many grey homes when not a single person has ever admitted to liking the grey trend. In fact everyone points out how much they hate it.

I also hate scandi trend. The bony pointy furniture in the same pale wood, everything looks cheap, the furniture looks very uncomfortable and it feels like you just stepped into a past decade. Yuck.

The shaker kitchen trend is nice with light coloured units preferably.

phlebasconsidered · 22/08/2020 18:55

I like grey. There are some lovely warm pale greys and I find it really calming with warm colours added to it. It's a much nicer neutral than magnolia. Most of our lower floor is a very pale yellow but upstairs my room is grey and yellow, my sons is grey and red / burgundy, my daughters is grey and green, the landing and study are grey and pearl and the bathroom is grey and blue. It's a lovely silk paint and it looks light and airy - not depressing.

WineIsMyMainVice · 22/08/2020 19:00

I agree, I absolutely hate those ‘family’ and ‘love’ signs!!! 🥴

StatisticallyChallenged · 22/08/2020 19:13

The virtual tour for the house we're buying (very useful when you're trying to remember details!) has wall word art in the master bedroom - "all you need is love"

Needless to say I will NOT be recreating that!

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 19:42

Magnolia is hideous in some lights.

Parker231 · 22/08/2020 20:02

Another pet hate of mine is mirrored wardrobes particularly when the bedroom is tiny.

PegasusReturns · 22/08/2020 20:05

@BluebellsGreenbells

I think it depends when you shop: cheaper shops like Next, The Range, DFS, anywhere on Facebook/eBay seems to be full of grey/crushed velvet/shaggy rugs.

There’s plenty of choice, still without breaking the bank: Made, Oka, Dwell, Nest etc where you don’t have to buy grey.

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 20:08

Mirrored wardrobe doors are fine if they don't dominate the room.
They can be creepy.
