I've just moved house and have been looking online for style inspiration. But I'm just getting so tired of seeing the same thing everywhere. It's not that it doesn't look good, it's just that it's done to death.

Typically you will have a grey room, with throws artfully draped over the arm of the sofa. The furniture will be all white. There will be a floor lamp, probably tripod style. Candles will adorn the shelves, along with multiple house plants. On the pouffe, there will be a pretty tray, with two more of the following: a candle, a small vase, a book, some pretty cups. Hanging on the wall or on a shelf somewhere will be a framed print of some inspirational saying - possibly 'she said she could, so she did' or just a single word, like 'family' or 'love' or 'home'. Other artwork or mirrors will be placed on shelves and will lean against the wall, rather than being flat against them.

I'm not knocking any of this. I just yearn for something different.

@VeryLittleOwl thank you so much for sharing the pics, it looks great. I will definitely look into finding somewhere for the paint, good to know, thanks.

Sort of get this as I'm trying to decorate my house at the minute but I'm very uninspired. Wherever I look, the same ideas and trends come up and i don't want my home looking like The Range threw up it in.
But it's not new. I remember in the 90s when everyone had stencils, those king charles cavalier dog ornaments and dado rails.

@BluebellsGreenbells I have a purple sofa from Next! Bought it last year. Couldn't get it in the shop though, needed to have it custom made.

God some of you are snobs. This thread was about the frustration of what is available in high street shops - and some of you are just trashing people’s choices that aren’t to your tastes. Just worry about your own houses for goodness sake - does a vase of flowers in someone else’s kitchen actually impact you? No, so go spend your energy picking the perfect colourful paint for your own house instead. For what it’s worth, I like coloured walls and the odd accessory but I love neutrals and cannot abide stuff and clutter - some of you who are sounding like you’re trying painfully hard to be so clear you’re not trendy have described houses I would hate. We’re all different, life would be dull if we weren’t. Of course you can buy non grey things - you just need to look further afield than basic high street shops.

But that’s the issue. The high street only caters for one set of people. Everything just mustard, grey and now navy. The world has a wealth of colours and I’d love to buy some nice patterned cushions!

It’s not snobbery wanting something off trend, I mean it was great a few years ago when the colours I liked were in fashion!! Not now though.

Grey seems to be on the way out. Follow the Housetalk page/group on Facebook - lots of colour but still all the same look really.

Etsy is a great place to find cushions, lampshades, etc etc in every colour under the sun. Good to support small businesses and to have something different from the usual high street offering.

You're looking in the wrong places. Lots of terracotta and plants and natural fibre as are around. Plus the Telegraph interiors section often has lovely colourful homes

JammyHands · 26/08/2020 13:05

Any time I see a mirrored wardrobe I assume the people sleep in that room are into watching themselves coughing fit

catpoooffender · 26/08/2020 20:33

It's worth highlighting that I'm trying to do this on a very tight budget. It's all very well saying look further afield than the high street but that usually requires a decent amount of money.

That said the house we have is fine as it is for now. It's not a doer upper, it's just that in due course we'll need to put our stamp on it. And we need to decide what our stamp looks like.
