To get the rage about home decor trends...

I've just moved house and have been looking online for style inspiration. But I'm just getting so tired of seeing the same thing everywhere. It's not that it doesn't look good, it's just that it's done to death.

Typically you will have a grey room, with throws artfully draped over the arm of the sofa. The furniture will be all white. There will be a floor lamp, probably tripod style. Candles will adorn the shelves, along with multiple house plants. On the pouffe, there will be a pretty tray, with two more of the following: a candle, a small vase, a book, some pretty cups. Hanging on the wall or on a shelf somewhere will be a framed print of some inspirational saying - possibly 'she said she could, so she did' or just a single word, like 'family' or 'love' or 'home'. Other artwork or mirrors will be placed on shelves and will lean against the wall, rather than being flat against them.

I'm not knocking any of this. I just yearn for something different.

I really don't understand the all grey look at all, also crushed velvet and white everywhere. It's all so drab.

VettiyaIruken · 21/08/2020 12:05

I never take any notice of trends . I just get what I like.
It's really the best way. Start with choosing a colour you love and take it from there.

BadDucks · 21/08/2020 12:05

Well if you look for “trends” you will by its definition find stuff that looks the same. This is why I like minimalism decorating requires less shopping around! Actually that’s not true it’s hard to do minimalist without looking sparse and depressing.

Karcheer · 21/08/2020 12:07

We are about to decorate a house we've recently bought. Im using different shades of blue. I think grey is over done and when there is too much it looks very bland.

teacake89 · 21/08/2020 12:08

Try having a look through some home decor magazines. I signed up to readly (first month is free) and I have been looking through decor magazines there. So many to choose from, and lots of different countries issues. All the back issues are included too.
I moved into my new house last year and am in the process of doing it up, so I feel your pain.
I'm not sure what your personal taste is, but there are American farmhouse magazines, country cottages, Victorian decor and scandi, to name a few.

jay55 · 21/08/2020 12:13

I panic when I see all light greys and whites and imagine the stains and grubbiness and think I'd turn into one of those old ladies with a plastic wrapped sofa.

minipie · 21/08/2020 12:14

There’s loads of non grey around. Have a look at madaboutthehouse blog (she goes for moody subtle colours but not grey). Or google “maximalism” or “colourful decor” for a riot of colour. If you’re signed up to Pinterest try similar search terms and you will find a whole different vein of stuff. Of course these are trends too Grin

thepeopleversuswork · 21/08/2020 12:15

Meh. If you follow "trends" in the first place you deserve what you get. Can't understand why this would give anyone the rage. Seems a very petty thing to get upset about.

applepineapple · 21/08/2020 12:15

All grey and mirrored furniture is grim, it just makes me think of Hinchers! Love more mid century modern/ Scandi/ boho myself Grin

missdunkindohnut · 21/08/2020 12:18

I think there’s a right mishmash of trends at the moment. There’s all the grey and white but also lots of yellow and mustard, navy blues, blush pinks and really strong colours like deep greens. I’m also noticing a lot of neutrals and beiges creeping back in too.

DappledThings · 21/08/2020 12:19

Absolutely. All the rooms in our house are different colours, just what we liked and thought suited each room. Picked up knick-knacks along the way

We've not planned rooms, just picked stuff we liked when we saw it. I have no idea if anyone would think my curtains go with my sofa or with the shelves or if they are different or similar styles.

BluebellsGreenbells · 21/08/2020 12:19

The problem is these trends are overloaded in the shops, so you can only buy grey or mustard whatever, I’ve just been to buy Capet and every shade of gray is cater for. I don’t want grey!!

Same for wallpaper I want purples and greens and not grey or silver.

It’s hard to find off trend basic items.

minipie · 21/08/2020 12:20

I would say the two main trends I’ve seen in magazines at the moment are 1) maximalism (lots of clashing prints and colours, eclectic accessories everywhere) and 2) natural (white, wood, leather, baskets, loads of plants).

Then in high street shops there’s still a lot of grey but also jewel tones with brass, and the two looks mentioned above are creeping in too (especially baskets)

DappledThings · 21/08/2020 12:21

Nonsense. I've been in a carpet shop today and Homebase. Carpets of every conceivable colour, plain, patterned and stripy. Wallpaper in Homebase alone of all types. I've picked a roll of bright green leaves and tropical birds for one wall on the landing.
BluebellsGreenbells · 21/08/2020 12:23

You see the tropical birds is also a trend.

The carpet issue is a stock one, anything else has to be ordered in and is more expensive to do so. Stock carpets are cheaper.

BluebellsGreenbells · 21/08/2020 12:23

And we don’t have a home base and they don’t deliver.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 21/08/2020 12:24

Loads of different decor and things around right now? I don’t think you’re looking hard enough if you can only find white furniture and grey decor Confused

Kamma89 · 21/08/2020 12:25

Just go with what you like decor wise, it's more cringe worthy that you're bothered by the choices of others. The all white/grey look is a total travesty in my eyes but I'm sure they'd hate my favoured scandi/kooky look...which is also hugely overdone by millennials world over! You can't move for a houseplant in my house, not because they look nice trailing down a shelf but because I love to care for them & the colour/texture they add. Makes my space a cliche but makes me happy. All good.

DappledThings · 21/08/2020 12:25

Is it? Oooh, I'm trendy for probably the first time ever. How exciting!

BlueSlice · 21/08/2020 12:25

Where are you looking?

I follow a lot of home Instagram accounts and don’t see any of this!

What kind of style are you after?

Meruem · 21/08/2020 12:25

I would find a grey and white house so depressing. Even with the "pops of colour". I don't care about trends. My house is my home, not a fashion accessory. You need to shop around, scour the internet for the more unusual stuff, it is out there. If you want to makeover a room, my tip is to find one thing you love, be that a paint colour, a pair of curtains or even a decorative item, then build the room around that. It gives you a starting point.

ballsdeep · 21/08/2020 12:26

There's a house for sale near me. Every room is grey and white. It looks so sterile and clean I don't like it, it's put me off and o can't see past it! I like a lived in feel house

Toilenstripes · 21/08/2020 12:31

Apartment Therapy is a great resource.

minipie · 21/08/2020 12:32

I agree things like wallpaper will be trend driven but there are usually about 5 different trends going on in parallel. So some companies may do all grey and white but others will do loads of tropical and other maximalist patterns. If you want something outside those 5 trends it will be harder (eg at the moment pale yellow is not in fashion so hard to find)

Carpet is a long term investment for most people so neutrals will always be offered. Grey yes but also beige, greige and creams. If you want purple carpet you may find it harder Grin

nokidshere · 21/08/2020 12:34

I've lived in my house for over 20yrs now. It's been all colours of the rainbow in that time. I've had curtains, and blinds, and nothing at the windows, cushions no cushions, throws, plants, bright colours, dark colours...

Now it's a haven of calm and peace. Pale, minimalist, clean lines, muted colour and yes, shock horror, even some grey and mustard.

The secret is just to ignore what everyone 'thinks' it should be and create something that you want right now. I can't understand not being able to not look past the decor, or buying something because it's trendy. Find something you love as a starting point and go from there.
