AIBU to chuck it in the bin?

Got it together enough today to prep veg and chicken and make a bake ahead of dinner as DS is teething and we've had a few late dinners. Asked DH to take it out of oven in 10 as I was taking DH to the park.

Came back and it was in the top cold oven - great. Got it out and took some for DS dinner. I noticed there were a couole of flies around so put it back in cold oven and killed flies. They always seem to be one or two at the moment.

I mentioned the annoying flies to DH later. He said 'yes I noticed them earlier they were on the food when I came down'. Turns out he had taken the bake out and left it on the side, came down for a drink and noticed flies on it so put it back in top oven. This was about 20mins he reckons. I think we now need to chuck this as it had flies crawling on it for 20mins. Annoyed at lack of common sense and that he didn't tell me and then I fed it to my DS. He thinks food is still OK I think but agreeing with me so I don't argue with him.

AIBU - the food is fine tuck in
YANBU - gross chuck it

I'd chuck it if I knew it had been flied for so long.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/08/2020 20:07

It won't do any of you any harm to eat it, but the thought of it would put me right off. I wouldn't be able to eat it after that I don't think.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 20/08/2020 20:08

I'd eat it.
Has DS keeled over yet?

ContessaferJones · 20/08/2020 20:09

That is a bit gross, but your DS will probably be fine. I'd suggest you guys invest in some tinfoil though!

MrsCremuel · 20/08/2020 20:11

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay haha no. It's the thought of them padding about with their shitty little feet vomming on my food that puts me off. I did wonder if it would be ok if I nuked it in the microwave.

MrsCremuel · 20/08/2020 20:12

@ContessaferJones we have ample foil to cover it....he just didn't. I didn't think I needed to say.

honeygirlz · 20/08/2020 20:15

I'm so confused.

Why is the top of your oven cold.

Why would you put food in the top cold oven to kill flies.

ContessaferJones · 20/08/2020 20:16

Ah, I see. It's amazing how many minor yet pivotal actions seem to need spelling out to spouses, in my experience. I sympathise, it's incredibly boring and frustrating to live with.

honeygirlz · 20/08/2020 20:18

But yes, your DH was being stupid.

Mine accused me of bringing in flies with my fruit bowl (nectarines, bananas etc) but doesn't think the fact that he leaves food like out has anything to do with it Hmm

MrsCremuel · 20/08/2020 20:19

@honeygirlz it was cooked in the bottom oven so he put it in the top oven, which was not used so was not hot, out of the way of offending flies. Not to kill them. I don't know why he didn't use foil in the first place. He was busy with work apparently.

I really hate food waste.

TinySleepThief · 20/08/2020 20:21

I'm not squeamish but in this heat with flies on it for 20 minutes I would also chuck it.

Why is the top of your oven cold.

I'm picturing it similar to mine which has a grill part at the top which I often store food in as it doesn't turn on with the main part of the oven.

UnfinishedSymphon · 20/08/2020 20:22

Nah I wouldn't eat that, flies disgust me

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/08/2020 20:41

I know that people on MN like to pretend they are this super hygienic people, but come on. Food waste is a horrible thing.

You obviously heated it up properly through again so no need to throw it. I wouldn't throw it even if eaten cold. I swallowed more bugs in a garden last week than you had in your kitchen. I talk a lot...😂

BillysMyBunny · 20/08/2020 20:44

Well I doubt the flies were literally crawling all over it for 20 minutes. It was out for 20 minutes but I’d have thought the flies only landed on it briefly a couple of times. I wouldn’t worry about it but if feeling especially squeamish I would just microwave it to piping hot first. If really really squeamish I guess you could remove the top layer, but definitely no need to chuck the whole lot!

pussycatinboots · 20/08/2020 20:48

Serve it to him and make yourself some toast.
If he survives, he can finish it tomorrow = no waste Halo

Namechange2020onceagain · 20/08/2020 20:52

Bin it. The flies will have laid eggs, probably after crawling all over something disgusting and smelly outside.

It's not about MN hygiene, it's that it is just rank. Envy < not envy

Strawberrypip · 20/08/2020 20:52

yuck, I don't eat anything flies have landed on, cant help it. think it's because my mum used to always be like "did a fly just land on my plate!?" and if it had would throw said item away (chip, piece of lettuce - not the whole meal) and I havent been able to shake the habit. in this situation because I wouldnt know exactly where the fly had landed the whole lot would have to go. makes me feel sick even thinking about it

vanillandhoney · 20/08/2020 21:05

Wouldn't bother me. You've reheated it, surely?

I assume all these people who don't eat food that flies have landed on never go to picnics, BBQ's, bake sales or markets?

Namechange2020onceagain · 20/08/2020 21:11

You are correct. Grin Still I wouldn't want to eat fly caviar.
MrsCremuel · 20/08/2020 21:40

@Namechange2020onceagain fly caviar 😂. It's still festering in the top oven. We had a takeaway...

Have you ever heard of anyone in our climate dying because a fly landed on their food?

BlazeMonsterMachine · 21/08/2020 04:53

I'd let him eat it 😁

I must admit I did something similar recently.... Made a roast chicken, carved it and served and we all sat down for dinner, forgetting to cover the chicken. Came back about 30 mins later and I saw a fly on it.

They don't normally bother me that much, so I did a thorough inspection for eggs (nil) and zapped it in the microwave for 5 mins just in case.

Then into the fridge and made into coronation chicken the following day.

Which I fed to my husband as I couldn't bring myself to eat 🤦‍♀️

I felt like such a hypocrite. I hate waste though and he was oblivious to the whole thing. I do feel a little guilty though.....

I can't help but think of a Three Men in a Boat quote: "What the mind doesn't know, the stomach can't get upset about."

Gobbycop · 21/08/2020 06:20

It would be fine I know but I'd bin it and be fucked off too.

I hate flies, they crawl around on dogshit then walk over your food.

DerbyshireGirly · 21/08/2020 06:28

I am not "super hygienic" by any means but I couldn't eat food that a fly has been on. I wouldn't even just throw away the bit I'd seen them land on, it'd be the whole plate just in case. I know it's wasteful but they're horrible sicky pooey ugly blehhhh horrible things.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/08/2020 08:30

Hope none of you eats out. Ever😂

I am now more concerned that it's still in the oven, not fridge. Seriously though. Some people in here should grow up and stop wasting perfectly good food 🙄 Shameful
