I have wrecked my gas hob! Help

Yarboosucks · 20/08/2020 12:44

Posting here for traffic - very unreasonable I know

I have been really stoopid and have used oven cleaner on my gas hob collars. This took the silver coloured coating off. Can I use specialist high temperature paint (for bbqs and wood burners) to paint/spray them to look nicer?

Pesky voting buttons! Please don't vote - why is the default to not have voting?

If they're really bad is look at getting some replacements. Most manufacturers do spares, look online.

LookBackInIngres · 20/08/2020 12:48

Check out a company called espares or e-spares online,
Might have replacements.

Yarboosucks · 20/08/2020 12:49

The replacements are £40 EACH! I would need 6 and so that is not an option at the moment.

Hence the reason I never clean my cooker. Better to be safe Grin

Flatpackback · 20/08/2020 12:53

£40! That's outrageous. Hope someone can help out with a safe paint.

It isn’t. The default is to have voting.

I’d also replace the gas job with an induction hob rather than paying for spares/repair. So much easier to clean and more controllable than gas.

Cadent · 20/08/2020 13:12

Sorry but what possessed you OP Shock

That stuff is toxic, people have burnt themselves on it.

Hope you get it fixed but it was indeed 'stoopid'.

Lockheart · 20/08/2020 13:13

You really should consult an expert. Gas is not something to fuck about with.

1forAll74 · 20/08/2020 13:15

You should be able to get some specialized paint somewhere, there seems to be products for anything these days. Look on google, and type in your specific problem.

bobbiester · 20/08/2020 13:17

Just leave them - you now have a "shabby chic" "distressed" look to your hob.

ItsIslandTime · 20/08/2020 13:21

Can you post a photo?

Hellbentwellwent · 20/08/2020 13:26

Oops... sorry but I think you’ll have to cough up for the spares. Are there any on eBay for cheaper?

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 20/08/2020 13:30

now search on e-bay.... My cooker hinges on e-spares were £28 each and ebay £11 each.
Stiltonlover · 20/08/2020 13:32

oh dear OP.
I think something similar happened to our range.
Rented our house out temporarily to a family of absolute bellends and seems their rather enthusiastic cleaner did something similar. Totally ruined, new ones needed. I'd always been pretty careful cleaning as the instruction manual was so clear about only soap and water but I'd frankly wondered if that was just risk aversion on the part of the manufacturer but it seems not!
You'll need to get new ones as the residue from the crumbling burners blocked the holes for the gas to come through and the gas wouldn't easily light or burn cleanly.
We did at least get some of their deposit to cover it.
Sorry OP.

jimmyhill · 20/08/2020 13:52

LOL you really do not need a Gas Safe engineer to fix the decorative collars on a hob

HolyForkinShirt · 20/08/2020 13:55

UKWHITEGOODS is a really good website for spares

HolyForkinShirt · 20/08/2020 13:56

Nikori · 20/08/2020 14:02

You definitely can repaint them. I’m not sure of the paint though but try googling.

Is this the stuff?

noiwillnotbequiet · 20/08/2020 16:14

Exactly the same thing happened to mine about 10 years ago and the cooker has looked shit ever since.

I got out the cooker instructions and under the bit about how to clean it, there were very clear warnings to not use cleaning products like that. Apparently if you spilt something while cooking you had to stop cooking, take all the bits off the cooker, wait for them to cool down and then wipe with a damp soft cloth. Who has time to do that?

I ask you. What kind of pillock designs oven hobs you can't clean with kitchen cleaning products?

My problem was recently solved by chucking the old cooker in a skip and buying a new one.

Yarboosucks · 20/08/2020 18:25

@Namechange - Yes that is the type of stuff I am going to use. It is below the area where the flames come out - as the picture should show

Coughsyrupsucks · 20/08/2020 18:30

I really wouldn’t spray paint that bit, it’s going to get super hot with the flames. I think replace them as and when you can.

WrongKindOfFace · 20/08/2020 18:35

Just let them get mucky again and you won’t see that bit.

Waveysnail · 20/08/2020 18:43

What hob is it?
