I have wrecked my gas hob! Help

Posting here for traffic - very unreasonable I know

I have been really stoopid and have used oven cleaner on my gas hob collars. This took the silver coloured coating off. Can I use specialist high temperature paint (for bbqs and wood burners) to paint/spray them to look nicer?

I don’t think you will notice that in a few days. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think those bits are aluminium and you've oxidised them with the oven cleaner. The same thing happens if you put aluminium in the dishwasher.

I would take a scouring pad to it to remove the oxidation and they will come up shinier (but not perfect like before). Check they are aluminium with a magnet - it shouldn't stick.

RunningFromInsanity · 20/08/2020 19:52

I did the same with oven pride and took off all the silver paint including the temperature numbers and diagrams which show which knob is for which hob.

It’s a 1/6 chance you turn on the right gas ring now and a complete guess as to what temperature the oven is.

don't think I'd want to mess around with spray paint on a gas hob.
Damage doesn't look that bad - compared to a potentially burned down house Hmm

A thought - since they look awful already, try a Brillo pad. It might improve & I doubt it will look worse

Namechange2020onceagain · 20/08/2020 20:30

The paint said up to 600 degrees so should be okay. It does say that the heat cures it and it will off-gas for around an hour, so you would need really good ventilation while it's doing that.

I think I would just buy a new hob or like pp suggested, brillo pad it.

Do those bits come off the hob?

Yarboosucks · 20/08/2020 20:52

Right! I have a hot date with a brillo pad tomorrow. I will not paint them. A friend is going to see if they can be chrome plated (dull not shiny!) by his dad.

I thought this was going to be part two of the spatula and the lube thread 🤣

🤣 That was my first thought on reading the title. This is clearly a job for fish slice and sex lube!

@Hydrobatespelagicus - Thank you so much! It was indeed oxidisation and they have polished up as good as new. Thank you again!
