Stop calling it 'The Mask'

It is not a movie, or a culture, or a religious garment.

"People who do not wear the mask"

It sounds ridiculous.

A mask. Masks. Face coverings. Not "The Mask".

Pah.

Um, "The Mask" is a film!

MoonBaby1 · 20/08/2020 09:06

I’ve heard the muzzle on some conspiracy sites Grin

DanielRicciardosSmile · 20/08/2020 09:08

@W00t

Um, "The Mask" is a film!
But unless you're using the DVD cover as a shield, that's not really relevant to the point OP is making.

@W00t

I came to say the same thing, I was actually confused for a moment. Bad night sleep Grin.

Well any face covering is fine, @DanielRicciardosSmile, so it would be permissible if one wished.

Sh05 · 20/08/2020 09:37

Whatever lightens the mood I say. My friend suffers mild asthma, mask wearing is more stifling for her than the rest of her family. I know her older DC have started calling it 'the mask'!
Don't forget 'the mask' mum! has become a slight joke in her household.

mylittleyumyum · 20/08/2020 09:40

Why is it being afforded the 'The'

That's what I'm getting it. (and the wearing of a face-covering is not a movie - we are talking about 'A' Mask NOT 'The' Mask)

Do you wear the jacket?

Lighthearted, but I'm noticing it more and more and I'm wondering why the "the" is being adopted.

I get it being used in a tongue in cheek way. That doesn't bother me.

It's "The Human Cone of Shame" in our house 🤷🏼‍♀️.

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/08/2020 09:43

It's like some people talk about going to The Asda.

wtf

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/08/2020 09:44

I think it depends on context.

"I need to nip back to the car, I've forgotten the mask". Fine.

"I am wearing the mask". Sounds odd.

I'm thinking about thsi too much now! :)

WorkinWomansBlues · 20/08/2020 09:47

Who is saying this? Not heard it once... what a strange affectation...

Starbuggy · 20/08/2020 09:47

I’ve not heard anyone refer to it as “the mask” Confused

WidowTwonky · 20/08/2020 09:49

I’ve never heard this

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 20/08/2020 09:53

(Some) Muslim women wear “the veil” so it’s a similar usage - I’m not sure what the implications are of that. But it’s not a usage I’ve seen myself.

SerenaSandwich · 20/08/2020 09:54

I've never heard this but I agree it sounds weird!

Sunflowerlover20 · 20/08/2020 09:55

I haven’t heard one person say they mask’Hmm

On the other hand I did expect a thread about the film as it’s just been added to Netflix Grin

Sunflowerlover20 · 20/08/2020 09:55

*’the mask’ mine should read

mylittleyumyum · 20/08/2020 09:58

I've seen it on here (don't know why i subject myself to mask threads) and it is becoming more prolific.

Yes - similar usage to the veil, but less deserving.

Burnthurst187 · 20/08/2020 09:58

Nearly as annoying as somebody starting a thread with the word So

NannyR · 20/08/2020 10:02

The other phrase that annoys me is people talking about "masking up" - "I masked up before I went into tescos", why not just say I put my mask on? You don't hear people saying I coated up or I'm hatting up.

Dahlietta · 20/08/2020 10:02

Oh, I quite like that. “The mask” 😷. But then I do refer to it as “The plague” too. I am all for the dramatic.

Doesn't bother me at all. It's obvious what they are referring to so it makes no difference to me.

I have also heard 'the muzzle' and that doesn't bother me either. Somebody giving it silly name doesn't automatically make them an anti mask conspiracy theorist. Some people just want to make jokes about stuff to lighten their day whilst living in a pandemic. Give them a break.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 20/08/2020 10:18

I think it's a term of ownership and specificity, like taking the dog for a walk rather than a dog for a walk. It should probably be read to signify 'my' mask, rather than any old mask.
