AIBU to dislike eating birthday cake?

Something about birthday cake particularly vanilla sponge and buttercream monstrosities really makes me feel unwell. If I do ever eat it I feel queasy for a while afterwards.. I don't know if it's just me.
We went to in-laws the other day for a meal, and they offered leftover birthday cake for dessert as one of them had just celebrated their 60th. I refused politely, they asked why, I said although I didn't mind it for some reason it always makes my stomach turn. Cue shock horror from M-I-L! AIBU or do other people have the same reaction to it too?

I'm with you there. My children and I dislike birthday cake because it makes us feel sick! My eldest birthday is coming up and shes asked for ben and Jerry's ice cream instead of cake.

I’m in Canada and I’d bloody kill for a slice of British birthday cake, store bought or otherwise Cake

Queenoftheashes · 20/08/2020 08:54

Mmm cake. If I’ve made it myself with Clarence court eggs it’s irresistible and particularly if I’ve added a layer of dark ganache.
Costco cake and similar not so much. I don’t get why people go on about it... plastic cake.

HeronLanyon · 20/08/2020 09:00

I don’t have a sweet tooth and a whole piece of cake with icing can (not always) Male my stomach turn too.

That cake /salt thread tickled my fancy though. I’ve been thinking of cake with Generous scattering of roasted salted pumpkin seeds or similar. Grin

wigglerose · 21/08/2020 11:04

It's ok not to like things, I hate baked beans. But you could have declined in a politer way.

SenorFrog · 21/08/2020 11:20

Totally with you, I hate cake. I always get shocked expressions from other people too.

Bloomburger · 21/08/2020 11:21

🤢 hate it. Especially when 11 little darlings blow the candles out and their spit lands all over it!!

boltzmannbrains · 21/08/2020 11:41

It’s disgusting.

Chocolate cake, carrot cake, my favourite fresh strawberry cake, or a proper home made Victoria sponge with just a bit of jam, are all lovely. Commercial white sponge with icing is vile!

Ooh!!

I like experimenting with baking. My dad asked me to make a fruit cake (ugh) every year, and in order to make one that’s palatable for people who didn’t grow up under rationing I ended up creating a recipe that used fresh crushed pineapple, macadamia nuts, and was shot through with mulled wine-infused caramel.

Thecobwebsarewinning · 21/08/2020 12:00

I love a slice of shop birthday cake with buttercream icing. It’s got to be an all butter one though, I can’t be doing with hydrogenated fats or palm oil. I also can’t be doing with eating it at a birthday party. It’s best the morning after with some nice hot coffee.

Beebopbad · 21/08/2020 12:03

I got norovirus after eating 2 Krispy Kreme donuts. I'm with you. Dough plus sugar plus cream.

GreyishDays · 21/08/2020 12:06

I don’t think stomach turning means what you think it does.

I think you meant it upsets your stomach. I think most people use stomach turning to mean you find the idea of it disgusting.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 21/08/2020 12:09

if lots of icing, i sometimes put that to one side
then pick at eating bits of it slowly Hmm

and avoid bits that anyone's spat on in the candle blowing out ceremony

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 21/08/2020 12:14

I also like savoury muffins. I was very disappointed to order a spinach muffin in a cafe last week - and be served with one of those toastable muffins with spinach in.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/08/2020 12:58

Eww, what in the name of fucking pine nuts is that?
Savoury muffins are flat, should be cut in half, toasted, and served with lots of butter and cheese.

Itsatoughgig · 21/08/2020 13:12

@Lilybet1980

Try putting some salt on it?
Well played
Poppyismyfavourite · 21/08/2020 13:47

I had no idea that "birthday cake" was a specific kind of cake?? Is this right? Surely it's just a normal cake (which come in a range of flavours) with candles on?

The last "birthday cake" I ate was DHs - it was a lemon drizzle cake.
And shop-bought cakes are mostly bad in general...

Miranda15110 · 21/08/2020 13:51

I hate it too! I like a nice Victoria sponge with a jam and cream filling but butter cream and that yuk they cover cupcakes in is sickly and totally disgusting!

IamMaz · 21/08/2020 14:02

I wouldn't want to eat left over birthday cake - or ANY birthday cake [unless I had made it!!!].
I'm with you OP.

HeronLanyon · 21/08/2020 15:07

poppy I agree. Birthday cake is any cake surely (maybe not fruit cake) with some candles. I guess usually anplainish sponge with icing. I have never heard of ‘birthday cake’ as a Specific type of cake such that you could say ‘bc is my favourite’ or ‘I don’t like bc’

Poppyismyfavourite · 21/08/2020 16:13

@HeronLanyon glad it's not just me. Even as a child I had "flavoured" cakes (which my mum made). I think I usually chose chocolate Grin
Are people thinking of that American kind of cake with just plain sponge and plain buttercream-type icing?

roxfox · 21/08/2020 20:40

Yabvvvvvvvvvvu

Birthday cake is the best cake.

MissMuscle · 21/08/2020 20:49

Birthday cakes are the worst in this country. I cant stand fondant icing.

Home baked sponge cake with fresh whipped cream and strawberries... mmm!

chillandrelax · 21/08/2020 22:13

I don't really like cake (except for lemon drizzle and carrot cake) not a fan of icing either.
