AIBU to dislike eating birthday cake?

Something about birthday cake particularly vanilla sponge and buttercream monstrosities really makes me feel unwell. If I do ever eat it I feel queasy for a while afterwards.. I don't know if it's just me.
We went to in-laws the other day for a meal, and they offered leftover birthday cake for dessert as one of them had just celebrated their 60th. I refused politely, they asked why, I said although I didn't mind it for some reason it always makes my stomach turn. Cue shock horror from M-I-L! AIBU or do other people have the same reaction to it too?

You're not unreasonable to not like it, although I can't relate. It was a bit rude to say it makes your stomach turn, though. Saying that you were full would have been sufficient.

vanillandhoney · 19/08/2020 16:44

Why did you not just say you were full?

Telling someone their cake made you feel sick is a bit very rude Hmm

Freixene · 19/08/2020 16:45

YANBU at all, it‘s always too soggy or too dry with too much icing

The worst people are those who bring their homemade or supermarket cakes to restaurants and you’re forced to eat that instead of the dessert you saw on the menu two weeks ago

dwiz8 · 19/08/2020 16:45

Yanbu

But try putting some salt on it, heard it helps people cut the sweetness Grin

EatsShootsAndRuns · 19/08/2020 16:48

Birthday cake can be fruit cake too!

I usually don't like the ones you buy in the supermarket but I've always had a slice because invariably it's a child’s cake and I wouldn't want them disappointed.

Give me a lovely piece of moist fruit cake with marzipan and icing and I'll be queuing up for seconds!

HariboLectar · 19/08/2020 16:49

All the salt comments are too much

Homemade cake with butter cream - both made with actual butter is delicious.

But bought sickly sweet birthday cake with sickly sweet fondant icing is not. I think its the icing

carlablack · 19/08/2020 16:52

Nobody should be forced to eat (or like) sugar filled crap. Birthday cake or not. YANBU.

Though you could have worded it differently...

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/08/2020 16:53

Yanbu. Dh saved me a piece of his birthday cake which his Mum made him. I've just thrown it in the bin.

Mittens030869 · 19/08/2020 16:54

The problem is that you were rude about it, OP. Why didn't you just say, 'No thank you, MIL, I've had sufficient to eat.'

I don't much like it myself, so I'm with you there.

Ninkanink · 19/08/2020 16:56

Next time definitely try some salt on it. Sprinkle it quite furiously!

Elouera · 19/08/2020 16:58

The only cake I dont eat, or scrape the icing off, it one where the person or child has blown out candles with a stream of saliva or a spraying action in an attempt to blow them out!!!! Yuck!!!!

I agree, its very rude OP if you really did you use the terms 'makes your stomach turn!!!' Confused

hastingsmua1 · 19/08/2020 17:00

Depends where it’s from or who made it

Some people’s baking tastes vile

Some shop bought cake can be full of cardboard fondant or sickly buttercream etc

Holothane · 19/08/2020 17:09

No your not unreasonable I don’t like carnation cream, much milk on cereal, we all have our little likes and dislikes.

BlueJava · 19/08/2020 17:09

I have a sweet tooth, but for birthday cake it depends on where it's from. If it's sickly sweet I hate it! YANBU!

peoplearepeople · 19/08/2020 17:21

Supermarket cakes tend to be very synthetic tasting. I'm not a fan. Huge fan if I've made it myself though. Grin

To be honest though I generally tend to avoid other people's Birthday cakes if they've had candles on them to blow out. Now that really does turn my stomach. I'm always polite though and just claim to not be hungry.

CurtainWitcher · 19/08/2020 17:25

Ask for a slice.
Screw your face up at it.
Ask for salt.
Enthusiastically shake the salt all over it to add another layer to the cake.
Eat it.
Go on. Fucking eat it.
Grin

Sorry PPs I didn't really make it clear but I tried the I'm full and the I'm genuinely full etc etc... And she kept pushing ! I wasn't rude to her or about her cake and she certainly didn't take it like , she was just very surprised someone didn't like something she has always viewed as a treat! - i made it quite clear to her it wasn't her cake I didn't like but just birthday cake in general..I can eat about a mouthful and I don't mind the taste, but within about 5 minutes I'm feeling pretty queasy.. something about sweet cake plus sweet jam plus sweet buttercream plus sweet fondant icing just seems to upset my stomach. I'd like to be able to enjoy it! - maybe it is just me after all!

I'm with you OP, especially those giant celebration cakes they get for someone's work anniversary - everyone else seems to think it's a real treat.

A home made fruit cake is miles better than shop bought. If I'm making one for a special occasion I soak the fruit in amaretto overnight. Lovely.
GTFOOMW · 19/08/2020 17:31

Any type of cake? Yes! Icing? Hard pass. I pick it off. Even a mouthful makes me feel nauseous.

Laufeythejust · 19/08/2020 17:35

I agree, I love cake but shop bought birthday cake hurt my teeth, it’s just so sweet! I always offer to bake a cake for birthdays, people think I’m being generous when it’s really just because I don’t want to eat shop bought cake!

netflixismysidehustle · 19/08/2020 17:39

Are you the MIL who puts salt on Victoria Sponges as you find them too sweet? (Another thread)

V1ckyCh1ck · 19/08/2020 17:42

My OH doesn't like cake full stop. Oh well more for me Smile

babybunny123 · 19/08/2020 17:47
