DH asked me what do cows eat. AIBU to divorce him immediately?

We were watching a program about a fancy hotel where they have their own cows. There was a clip of the cows being hand fed apples.

DH exclaimed in surprise ‘I didn’t know cows eat apples!’ He then paused and said, ‘What DO cows eat?’ whilst looking genuinely puzzled.

I said to him what do you think they do all day in the fields? They eat grass/hay etc, how do you not know this? DH then shrugged and said he’d never really thought about it.

He is a well educated intelligent man in his 40s. We also grew up/live in a place where dairy production accounts for a large percent of the export, so it’s not like he’s never seen a cow in a field or on a farm before.

I am aghast. AIBU to divorce him immediately? I really can’t see any other option to be honest

@Orchidsindoorsthe vast majority of cattle in the world aren't in the UK and even in the UK grass-fed is not guaranteed. Most cows in the world live on intensive factory farms where they don't see the outside world let alone grass. A lovely practice we are increasingly adopting. Farming is a very nasty business globally."

If course all the cows in the world arent in the uk, what a ridiculous thing to say. I live in Wales and drive all over Wales quite regularly, and yes, in the UK, the majority are out in the fields, you know, eating grass. That's what they do. I also go to regular country shows, and they are all there, grass fed. I'm not talking about cows in America, where I'm sure there are shortages of grass, but here in the UK, theres bl*dy tons of it. Towards the end of summer you see massive plastic balls if wrapped hay in the fields, that's hay that they are storing for Winter, when the cows cant get to the grass so much because of snow and because it doesnt grow so fast in the winter. So yes, cows eat grass in the uk, all f*king day. There arent big enough farm buildings for them to be indoors all day, like in America, so unless the farmers have them in underground bunkers, they are in the fields.

Sorry, orchid you’ve confused me with this. No, he isnt, she thought dark side meant "not explored" as she also thought deepest darkest africa meant not explored, he was right because he was referring it to being dark, because it's dark, but there is an element of truth because the sun is actually shining on it from the other side at times, it's just we cant see it. It’s all good though, I’ve been educated as to what dark side of the moon means

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/08/2020 13:48

so unless the farmers have them in underground bunkers, they are in the fields.

Barns perhaps?

youkiddingme · 19/08/2020 13:49

Except the ones you don't see which are raised in industrial scale beef farms What do you actually know about this? Do you farm?

Badly worded by me. I didn't intend to imply that all cows which are not outdoor reared are raised in industrial scale beef farms, but rather that those are one exception to the concept that all cows spend all day eating grass in fields.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 19/08/2020 13:49

I keep chickens...it is very common for people to ask me what I do with all the chicks. I explain that we don't get chicks because we don't keep a Cockerel. This blows their minds.

I understand that some people don't realise that chickens lay regardless of whether the eggs are fertilised or not but you would think I wouldn't need to go into the details with adults...

"You think the nice farmer lets the cute cows have a lovely life standing eating grass all day. Erm...no."

Yep, they do. Or do you think the ones we see all the time, you know, in fields, are on holiday or been chucked out for being naughty or something. I drive down a lane near my house, every day, same cows, there all day, eating grass.

Trashtara · 19/08/2020 13:49

Orchidsindoors

Unfortunately there has been a massive increase in intensively farmed beef in the UK, a herd of cows needs about 1/8th indoor space that they need outside. It is terrible and needs to be stopped. For this reason I only eat outdoor reared beef and pork (chicken I don't really care about and lamb almost exclusively outdoor reared, experiments in intensive farming lamb fail)

derxa · 19/08/2020 13:50

You think the nice farmer lets the cute cows have a lovely life standing eating grass all day. Erm...no. Here in Scotland they mainly do in the summer. In winter they're inside just like you. They eat silage and haylage.

Imworthit · 19/08/2020 13:52

@Zhampagne Your much more forgiving than me! 😂 I know what he was going for but the imagery of spider baby just cracked me up.

Orchidsindoors · 19/08/2020 13:53

"Barns perhaps?"

Have you ever been to the countryside? Yes there are barns, but the majority are quite small, not industrial size ones that you'd expect if all cows were in them never seeing the light of day. Most of the barns are milking sheds, where the cows go in, get milked, then back to the field. I dont doubt there are some industrial scale ones, but not many in the UK. The only industrial one I can think of near me, is full of chickens.

Right. So all this is being based on the one set of cows that you see?

Even on countryfile it shows f**ucking cows in fields. Why are people not believing cows are in fields eating grass? Just crazy. Do they nit see them when they drive in the country? Theres fields full of them by me.

My grandad was a dairy farmer. My other grandad was a pig farmer. I grew up in a farm house opposite a dairy farm. So yes. I’ve been to the countryside thank.
Herdwick · 19/08/2020 13:57

@NoMoreMrNiceGaius

Where I work we keep sheep of 2 different breeds and neither have long tails or have their tails docked. They're not super short but not dog/cat long like you see in those pictures.
What breeds are they?
Orchidsindoors · 19/08/2020 13:58

"Right. So all this is being based on the one set of cows that you see?"

No flamingos. I live in the countryside in Wales. The fields are full of them. Where are you? Do you ever get out to the countryside? I've also been on working holidays in farms, know lots of farmers, go all the country shows. Trust me, cows are mainly in fields.

Dahlietta · 19/08/2020 13:58

While I don’t doubt that there are cows living much shittier lives than this, I am confident that OrchidsIndoors does not live near the only field of cows in the country.

Like I just said both of my grandfathers were farmers and I grew up opposite a dairy farm in a farm house. You driving past some cows isn’t exclusive knowledge you know.
Orchidsindoors · 19/08/2020 13:59

And flamingos...if you ever see a tourist brochure of Wales, you can almost guarantee there will be a picture of a cow, IN A FIELD!!!! Same for most of the UK

Some really unpleasant attitudes on here actually.

Heaven forbid people think things that turn out to be incorrect Hmm

Yes. But a picture of a cow in a field does not mean that, as you have asserted, that cows in the U.K. only ever eat grass. They do not. There are actual farmers on this thread who are stating that at some point in the year their cows are in barns eating other food sources. This doesn’t mean that cows are in barns all year long but at certain parts of the year they are. You said ‘In the uk they are in fields all day, constantly eating grass.‘ This is not true for all cows.

My cousin's DH, a science teacher who delivered high school sex education, believed women's breasts grew when men felt them.

So the bigger the breasts, the more attention they'd had, possibly from a number of different men.
A right-handed man must be careful to also use his other hand so his wife's breasts wouldn't grow unevenly.

When he casually mentioned this after several years' marriage, Wifey was hysteria with laughter for about a week. It's possibly her happiest memory of that relationship.
