DH asked me what do cows eat. AIBU to divorce him immediately?

We were watching a program about a fancy hotel where they have their own cows. There was a clip of the cows being hand fed apples.

DH exclaimed in surprise ‘I didn’t know cows eat apples!’ He then paused and said, ‘What DO cows eat?’ whilst looking genuinely puzzled.

I said to him what do you think they do all day in the fields? They eat grass/hay etc, how do you not know this? DH then shrugged and said he’d never really thought about it.

He is a well educated intelligent man in his 40s. We also grew up/live in a place where dairy production accounts for a large percent of the export, so it’s not like he’s never seen a cow in a field or on a farm before.

I am aghast. AIBU to divorce him immediately? I really can’t see any other option to be honest

This better explains it though it is a bit simplistic and not the whole story.

Afaik the dark side of the moon is unseen from earth because the moon revolves on it's axis at the same speed at which it rotates the earth, so that the same face always faces the earth.

Manolin · 19/08/2020 13:01

@ThickFast

But now I think that blackamericano ‘s dh is wrong. Sun must shine on the back otherwise what would a solar eclipse be?
OK, but the moon does not emit light it reflects it. There is no moonlight only sunlight.
JammyHands · 19/08/2020 13:01

@flamingo What Orchid said. She thought they were the same thing.

a lot of countries don't allow UK blood donors because of mad cow - Canada, US
You just have to have lived in the UK between 1980-mid1990s - not just born here. Quite frightening when you think about it."

Including the uk actually. If you've had a blood transfusion before a certain date (the period when we had mad cow disease), you cant give blood.

The Moon faces the same side to the Earth all the time because it rotates with the same period as it orbits, it's tidally locked. This is very common when a small object orbits close to a larger object, for instance Mercury has one side permanently facing the Sun, and I'm pretty sure that all of Jupiter's moons also have the same side facing Jupiter. All parts of the Moon get roughly the same amount of sunshine on average.

*Ex 2: How Do! babies hold on when they breast feed??

I don't think this is such a ridiculous question from a man (or even a woman who hasn't had children).

ThickFast · 19/08/2020 13:03

Manolin I know that, I was just thinking about how the moon goes between sun and earth in a solar eclipse. So the sun must shine on the dark side of the moon. Which I had never known until now.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 19/08/2020 13:03

DP thought Hitler started both world wars. Direct quote “I bet when WW2 kicked off everyone said oh no Hitler not again” Hmm.

He also thought Jesus wrote the Bible.

However I can’t sneer as I thought car horns had compressed air in them. You’d go and get your horn refilled with air at some point. No one ever put me right Blush.

MillicentMartha · 19/08/2020 13:04

The sun sees all of the moon! When it’s a new moon, the sun is shining on the ‘dark side.’ It virtually faces the Earth as it orbits us. There’s a bit of a wobble, so we can see a bit more than half during its cycle.

Orchidsindoors · 19/08/2020 13:04

"Afaik the dark side of the moon is unseen from earth because the moon revolves on it's axis at the same speed at which it rotates the earth, so that the same face always faces the earth."

But if you think about it, as it rotates on it's own axis, certain parts of the earth do see it. There is never a side that is never seen, surely?

MillicentMartha · 19/08/2020 13:05

No, orchid, there’s nearly half of it that you can only see from space.

derxa · 19/08/2020 13:06

ust as long as he doesn't think cows make milk as a result of eating grass
Of course they have to give birth first but how else would they produce milk if they were not fed and watered. They're mammals just like you.

Darkest Africa is a Victorian term and there is debate over its meaning.
In Paddington Bear, there's mention of darkest Peru, which would suggest a connection with limited sunlight in dense jungle.

The general consensus seems to be that terms like the Dark Continent referred to its unknown nature, I've always suspected an unpleasant racist undertone to it (cf. also Dark Africa...), related to the idea of ignorance/savagery, being "benighted", in more ways than one.

The OED says:
Sometimes two or more fig. senses are combined. as in the Dark Continent = Africa. Frequently in superlative as an epithet for Africa and hence applied (chiefly jocularly or ironically) to other places that are considered remote, uncivilized, etc.

Topseyt · 19/08/2020 13:06

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar

DH thought that the 'dark side of the moon' was so called because it didn't get any sunshine. I told him that it was 'dark' meaning 'unknown' and asked him what he thought the old phrase 'deepest, darkest Africa' means and said that it's where the trees are very close together. Grin
He is right about the dark side of the moon. It is the side furthest from the sun, so it is in darkness.
RiteAid · 19/08/2020 13:07

Could be worse - my BIL recently revealed that he thought cows just naturally produced milk all the time, regardless of whether they had calves. Baffling.

No. It is usually referred to as the 'far side of the moon' rather than dark these days but it was only seen for the first humans when it was photographed by a Soviet probe in the 50s. The first humans to see it in person were the crew of Apollo 8 in 1968.

The tidal forces of the earth have an effect on the Moon's rotation, meaning that the same side is always facing the earth. All explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_side_of_the_Moon

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 19/08/2020 13:08

You might want to Google that Topseyt.

MillicentMartha · 19/08/2020 13:09

Topseyt, it actually means the far side of the moon from the Earth. Which isn’t always dark. Or have I been listening to too much Pink Floyd?

Zhampagne · 19/08/2020 13:09

Oh dear.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 19/08/2020 13:10

Your answer wasn't actually that correct. The majority of a farm cows food will be soya. Cheap reliable protein.

PlumsInTheIcebox · 19/08/2020 13:11

'grass-fed' beef and dairy are premium products in the USA because it is usual for beef to be farmed intensively with little or no access to pasture.

Yes! I was really confused when I used some American recipes which wanged on at length of the importance of seeking out grass-fed beef and butter and paying the extra for them because they were so much more nutritious.

giantangryrooster · 19/08/2020 13:11

OP, you can tell your dh that some farmers feed the cows chocolate, that's how you get chocolate milk Wink.

Actually it is true about the feed, I have thought of applying for the job myself. Hard pressed I'll even say mooh to get free chocolate Grin.

Disclaimer: No it doesn't give chocolate milk, some have actually thought so.

"But now I think thatblackamericano‘s dh is wrong. Sun must shine on the back otherwise what would a solar eclipse be?"

No, he isnt, she thought dark side meant "not explored" as she also thought deepest darkest africa meant not explored, he was right because he was referring it to being dark, because it's dark, but there is an element of truth because the sun is actually shining on it from the other side at times, it's just we cant see it.

youkiddingme · 19/08/2020 13:13

If you face a person, and walk around them moving your body so that you are always facing them as you walk around them, that's roughly how it works. I think.
