MiL a-salted a birthday cake

CurtainWitcher · 18/08/2020 15:58

DD's birthday get-together for a few family members in the garden.

I made a lovely (if I do say so myself) big, decorated Victoria sponge, which is DD's favourite.

DH handed a slice to MiL, who immediately asked for salt. She then shook salt ALL over it, before eating it.

It's not the first time she's salted sweet food. She says it's the only way she can "bear it".

Aibu to suggest she doesn't ask for cake, if she's going to cover it in salt?

With the update, YADBU.

She has form for this and other tastes with food yet you’ve come here to ask others if you should tell a grown woman how she can eat something?

Also, what is wrong with adding butter to tomato sauce? Have you ever tried it before snubbing you’re nose at it? People also add cream to tomato sauce. I’ve added butter and cream on separate occasions for for my husband because even though he likes tomatoes, his stomach doesn’t )think it is the acidity when cooked) so it makes him able to eat it without being sick.

Why do you care so much about her eating habits, especially if it is the norm for her?

At home they're very meat and two veg, with the odd spag bol. Not very adventurous and, I feel, looks down on more "exotic" foods.

Maybe you should spend less time thinking about what and how your MiL eats?

lowlandLucky · 18/08/2020 17:59

when her kidney's pack up you can send her flowers

CurtainWitcher · 18/08/2020 18:00

Thinking it all through, I do think she plays up if there's an audience. There's definitely an element of her putting her mark on other people's food, especially (e.g. Italian restaurant) the food is reputed to be of a high standard.

We once went to a highly thought of gastro pub together and she frowned everything in salt, pepper and brown sauce before trying any of it, with a sorry of "That's better" approach.

Sort of, not sorry of

Hilarious Grin

My DH had a relative that used to put sugar in her sherry at Christmas. They used to leave the sugar bowl out for her in the end.

One year they were really naughty and gave her dry sherry and hid the sugar bowl so she had to ask for it. Hmm

@CustardySergeant

I have a medical condition which requires us to drink or eat salt water. It’s well known. Others eat the gravy cube. Some drink soy sauce.

However our medical condition is incredibly rare. I think there’s only 8000 or so of us.

We lose the sodium from our blood quickly and we can die from it. So not only are we taught it from the specialists. But we crave it too. Crazily crave it though. I’ve put salt on cakes and sweets before.

Hoggleludo · 18/08/2020 18:06

Though the salt water you’ve got to be careful. It can make you sick. But my biggest guess is that because we need it to such an extent. Our bodies don’t reject it or make us sick.

@cdtaylornats

I have a cousin who butters Madeira cake.
That sounds delicious to be fair.
malificent7 · 18/08/2020 18:09

I cannot believe all the people saying yabu. Salt on a birthday cake is weird. Even salted caramel is disgusting!

Sexnotgender · 18/08/2020 18:09

Even salted caramel is disgusting!

In your opinion...

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 18/08/2020 18:13

Sucks vinegar from packets in cafes. 🤣🤣🤣

I’d treat her as the bonus entertainment at all family gatherings. Enjoy her whilst secretly thinking ‘what a twat’. 🤣

ZZGirl · 18/08/2020 18:15

I really don't get why you care so much lol

FortniteBoysMum · 18/08/2020 18:17

The answer is hide the salt pot next time she's round. She either eats it as it is or leaves it. Surely she is aware that level of salt is not good for her.

I have to avoid excess sodium, it’s something you get used to and I dislike the taste of salty food. It would freak me out.

user1498572889 · 18/08/2020 18:30

It does sound strange but then I dip cake in vinegar. Only in private though.

Lozz22 · 18/08/2020 18:32

@CustardySergeant

"I’ve put teaspoons of salt into water and drunk it before"

I thought that acted as an emetic. Don't you feel sick afterwards?

Not if you only use a small amount it doesn't. My neurologist recommended it to me, to raise my blood pressure back up
TooLittleTooLate80 · 18/08/2020 18:35

Embarrassing non-issue. Especially when you read some of the jaw dropping MiL stuff on here.

YABU massively. I hate salt but its definitely been creeping into puddings in the last couple of years.

ClementineWoolysocks · 18/08/2020 18:43

She has every right to ask for cake and eat it however she enjoys it. It's not going in your mouth so what's the big deal?

Porcupineinwaiting · 18/08/2020 18:46

And if it's a question of rude, then its rude to dictate to your guests how or if they should eat the food you sere.

chardonm · 18/08/2020 18:47

How bizarre to give this any headspace at all. Live and let live!
