Firstly I know I am being unreasonable posting here but I’m too tired to work out where would be better.
4 yr old had headache on Sunday. Reluctant to eat yesterday and temperature shot up to 39.1. Took him for a COVID test. He was v distressed by it and if I’m honest I am doubting my ability to have got a reasonable sample from him (I had to do the test myself in the back of the car). Calpol worked its magic perked him right up afterwards but he just appeared in my bed with temp back up at 39.1 again. Coughed a handful of times in the night (new but not persistent). We are already quarantined as we returned from a country where we needed to 10 days ago. Whilst we were ‘happy‘ to quarantine we had been in an area with v low cases and v much kept ourselves to ourselves like we had been doing here. None of my children have even been in a supermarket since March. So I’m surprised he has been able to pick up anything.
Have you had a test for your young child and if yes and it was positive how did it start? Thank you. I was sooo looking forward to going away with friends this weekend but I fear it’s looking unlikely 😬

Sorry for typos esp in title (tested). Back to ‘very tired’ disclaimer Blush

Oh and how long did the result take to come through from a drive through testing centre?

It was early (late March) and so we had no test - but we are certain she had it. With dd It started with headache, Extreme tiredness & a rollercoaster of 40 degree fever spikes which lasted 7 full days. A tiny cough near the end but no breathing problems ever. Times when she seemed absolutely fine by lunchtime on Calpol only to peak again in the afternoon into evening. It was tough. Hope your son feels better soon.

My 4 year old DS hasn’t had it but we all went for tests last weekend because he came down with a cough. The test results came back very quickly, test at 11am, results came through 3am the next morning. It was hard to swab a 4 year old properly but I was told the test would come back “inconclusive” if there wasn’t enough sample so the fact that it came back negative meant we did it ok.

2littleboyzmum · 18/08/2020 06:43

Not had a child tested but my partner had his done the same way and they said it can take up to 3 days at most but should be sooner than then. By the way it's not just supermarkets you can catch it from, I work in one and for months we've not had masks until recently and we haven't had Covid. The virus lives on surfaces a while longer so if you touch a surface with it on and then eat with bare hands without washing them then there's potential to get sick. Have you looked at other things it could be? Tonsillitis or strep throat or flu or any other childhood infection?

peanutbutterandfluff · 18/08/2020 06:46

Did a test 10:30am on a Saturday and results 2am that night (negative). Fingers crossed for you.

Browntile · 18/08/2020 06:47

Thanks all. @DinoGreen did you throat swab or just nose? They told me not to even attempt throat as he was so upset but to do both nostrils. I did but def not 10/15 seconds each Confused

slipperywhensparticus · 18/08/2020 06:47

you have left the country? And you cant work out where you caught it from? This is why they have a long self isolation rule isn't it? Because it takes 2 weeks to develop i thought?

Browntile · 18/08/2020 06:52

Thank you @2littleboyzmum. I have considered other illnesses. The problem with COVID is it presents like so many others it’s impossible to know (obviously why I took him to be tested). I do realise you can catch it from anywhere but my point was really he hasn’t been anywhere and not inside at all (wasn’t trying to pick on supermarkets) so I was surprised he’d managed to pick up anything.

ittakes2 · 18/08/2020 06:53

I have been tested twice and had the results within 12-15 hrs.

Browntile · 18/08/2020 06:58

@slipperywhensparticus absolutely and why we have taken it seriously and quarantined as per the rules. However we took maximum precautions. Ie drove in our own car, used channel tunnel so we didn’t mix with others, stayed in a family property that had been empty since February, v low cases in area we went to, wore masks when out and didn’t go out much (only I went to supermarket for example and hand washed like a demon) so surprised one of us may have potentially have caught it.

Not my child but my friends 2 year old had a positive test a few weeks ago. Absolutely no idea where he got it from as he had been with them
The whole time, hadn’t been near any other people and both his parents tested negative Confused. He was fine, just high temp and sleepy. He recovered quickly

timesareachanging · 18/08/2020 07:03

Is it not more likely to be a cold?

Browntile · 18/08/2020 07:08

@ZeldaSmelda wow that’s crazy and what could potentially be happening here! Fingers crossed not though bits going to be a long day with Peppa pig for me I feel!

Good to hear how fast tests have come back though. Thanks all x

OP posts:
Browntile · 18/08/2020 07:13

@timesareachanging I’d like to hope so but a quick google tells me incubation for a cold is only a few days. We haven’t left the house for 10 so not sure how he’s have caught one Confused.
Any other time I would have just thought that and any other time but 2020, as long as he was feeling better I’d have taken him away at the weekend without a second thought but feel I can’t assume anything is a cold this year. Fingers crossed it is somehow though!

I had my 2 year old tested Sunday around 9am and the result (neg) came back yesterday morning before 7am. Also didnt think we got a great sample but I assume if I didnt it would have needed to be done again. Fingers crossed for you x

Browntile · 18/08/2020 07:29

@Iwantafuckingbreak that is exactly the response I was after and I will base all my hopes on your response now Grin.

@Browntile I did swab my DS’s throat but only for about 2/3 seconds as he wouldn’t tolerate it! Nostrils we managed a bit longer by promising DS an ice cream when we got home! I think they say 10 seconds to be safe but you can probably get a decent swab with a lot shorter time.

Monkeynuts18 · 18/08/2020 07:36

Tested 1 year old DS a couple of weeks ago. Test at 11.30, negative result by 5am the next morning.

We only did nostrils - they told us not to bother with his throat.

Kezziethecat · 18/08/2020 08:24

Tested my 2 year old last week as she had a cold and high temperature. We also haven't been out much so shows how easily viruses are caught. To be honest she quite enjoyed the test, she kept opening her mouth and said it tickled when I did it but I know that's not usual! We had it done on Friday and only got the result yesterday - negative.

Zippy1510 · 18/08/2020 08:28

I’ve tested mine but it failed the initial extractions step as I didn’t do it well enough. Both myself and husband tested negative and husband was the only one with any symptoms and since DS hadn’t been anywhere without us then we assumed he was negative too. If you’ve gone through an airport then that’s going to be much worse than a supermarket so they could have easily picked something up there. I always get sick after flying.

Zippy1510 · 18/08/2020 08:29

We also got notified within around 4 hours that his had failed!

MakeItRain · 18/08/2020 08:46

We never tested but I'm pretty sure my son had it in March. He had a slight cough and temp initially. The temp kept spiking to nearly 40 over about 5 days and the cough got worse too. He was wheezy and achy. But looking back he "peaked" in illness on day 3 (with the coughing prolonged and distressing on that day) and from day 4, although still very poorly was showing signs of feeling slightly better. He was unwell with it for about two weeks altogether. I was unwell too, but not as bad as he was.
To be honest I think the tests are unreliable and even if it came back negative, I would not be going away with friends this weekend, and as your friend I wouldn't want to go away with you if your son has a cough and a fever. (I don't mean that in a horrible way! I'm just a worrier.)

Browntile · 18/08/2020 09:08

@Zippy1510 I should have made it clear that I didn’t fly (Eurotunnel, contactless pay at pump and took all food for journey and are in car). Wasn’t at all meant to imply that supermarkets are dreadful and the only place you can catch it, more just to imply how far I’ve gone in keeping ourselves isolated this year. Great that yours were negative and that you were notified quickly that it had failed - patience is not a virtue of mine!

@MakeItRain totally get what you’re saying. I promise I will make a sensible decision (just not ready mentally this morning yet to say goodbye to another plan😫).
