They need to sort it out before Thursday or allow centre assessed grades.

I work in children's mental health. Stop heaping unfairness on unfairness and uncertainty on uncertainty. Give them 2 weeks notice of where their life goes next fgs.

smile, that sounds promising!

Ds is very able in some subjects, although struggles more in the essay ones. He got a 9 in his maths and biology mocks even though he did zero revision. Revision caused countless meltdowns at home. We tried lots of study skills but he found even simple organisation difficult. I was trying to get the school to support him more when lockdown hit.

I am aware that A Levels are far more difficult and he won't really be able to 'wing' his way through them. The sixth form we have been looking at is smaller than his present school who have not really supported him adequately. I hope he feels able to give it a try.

Wheresthesanitygone · 17/08/2020 14:37

Wales are using teachers predicted grades, just been announced on BBC News website. I wonder if BBC is now downgraded to CCE?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 17/08/2020 14:46

Wales too. Regardless of opinion on whether CAGs will create an across the board over inflation of grades, surely the Government can realistically do nothing else now that every other Union country has accepted CAGs for their students?

Orchidsindoors · 17/08/2020 14:49

Wales has also confirmed those who got increased grades, will keep them.

cologne4711 · 17/08/2020 15:00

Given the fact that our teenagers been shafted by covid and will be shafted by Brexit, a bit of grade inflation doesn't matter. Once you've got your A levels GCSEs shouldn't matter (except for Maths and English) and once you have your degree, A levels shouldn't matter. Employers should only really need the grade for your most recent qualification unless an earlier one is more relevant.

Agreed, they can’t have a different system of grading than the rest of GB

Ahhh a mathsy boy. One of my students (bloody loved him but man he fought me every step of the way in English. Told me that the end of Macbeth was “an anticlimax” Got a 5 though!) got 8s/9s in maths, further maths and physics - he’s just got his Alevels and is off to Uni. He’s honestly like a different kid this year. He used to come and thrash me at UNO at breaktime 😂😂

I really hope things workout for your boy.

Punxsutawney · 17/08/2020 15:40

Thanks Smile. Yes is/was a maths boy! At primary his room used to be full of maths and physics quiz books, the more complex the maths, the more he liked it. He did used to moan about English. Trying to sit with him at home whilst he did a creative writing task was hard work!

He passed the 11+ plus without any formal tutoring and after a very difficult year 6, we were full of hope that he would thrive academically and socially at secondary. At the time he didn't have an autism diagnosis, so we had no idea how difficult things would become for him.

I'm really hoping that if he moves schools, there will be teachers that can see past his social awkwardness, anxiety and poor communication skills and realise that he's a young man with plenty of potential. He has lots offer and it seems such a shame that he is so isolated and spends most of his life alone in his bedroom with no aspirations for the future.

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2020 16:01

@Punxsutawney

Smile given the choice he would stay in his bedroom forever. He doesn't want to do anything, he thinks he has no future. He struggles hugely with social communication so it all seems overwhelming.

I'm trying to get him to move to a different school for sixth form as he has also been terribly bullied at his school. His autism means that he hates any change so he's very resistant. Covid meant that there were no induction days either.

He had decent mock results even though his anxiety was sky high so I was thinking that the results this week should be okay, but I'm not so sure now.

I still have no idea what he will be doing in September.

Hope everything goes ok for him.

My ds gets his too.

But you know I get this. Standing with you solidarity.

Using cags just shafts a different set, plus the year 12s who will be competing for fewer spaces next year as universities hold places for them. It also may lead to some of the smaller universities going bankrupt as they don't have enough students going in, shafting subsequent years again.
Nat6999 · 17/08/2020 16:03

Just been announced all results will be by teacher assessment, thank god for that!!!!

Yes, it’s still a shitshow, just a different kind of shitshow.

LimitIsUp · 17/08/2020 16:19

witchend Speculation!
Far better that this years A level & GCSE students should have just fallen on their swords Hmm

CAGs are the right approach

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/08/2020 16:23

It will be interesting to see what happens in terms of University places now - will they re-assess? Has clearing been completed, or even partially completed?

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/08/2020 16:25

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53810655

Orchidsindoors · 17/08/2020 16:32

Yes because those were downgraded have now already lost their place to someone else. So if the uni hasnt got enough places, they have to keep the one they got through clearing, or defer to next year.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/08/2020 16:40

If Unis could take more, but were just prevented by government cap, then this should be removed
and extra funds made available if need be

Students should not have to suffer any more, if it is at all preventable

SmileEachDay · 17/08/2020 16:50

It’s been announced that the government cap has been lifted. Doesn’t sort it out entirely, but it helps.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/08/2020 16:52

Good, finally a "can" instead of all these "can't"

Punxsutawney · 17/08/2020 16:53

it'sgetting thanks. I know that you understand. Hope all goes well for your Ds too.

I wonder what Thursday will bring now they have changed to CAGs.

No idea!

I have ds mocks. I have all his reports of prior exams over the years.

I'm sure school would have been fair and realistic. I'm sure grades will reflect what he could have achieved and will be on or around his mocks.

Thursday will tell!

orangejuicer · 17/08/2020 21:39

Just to say I don't agree GCSEs should be delayed, but given how fast policy is being written and then ripped up by this ridiculous govt, a delay - under this spotlight - might lead to a better outcome.

Oh and the cap still applies for unis in Wales, at the moment.

Devlesko · 17/08/2020 21:41

Bloody hell you couldn't make this up. Dd just got an email that igces bloody cambridge have changed their minds. She now has a 5/5, rather than the inflated 7/6.
At least it's a pass and still counts, Phew.

Devlesko · 17/08/2020 21:42

Sorry, forgot to say, it's the messing about that's annoying not the down grading which is completely fair.
