Don't get me wrong I'm touched he's thinking about my birthday next month and I'm sure I will love whatever I end up with but this is not quite what I had in mind

Me what would you like to do tomorrow?
ds go with dad to buy your birthday present
me there's no need to worry about that love
ds but I saw an amazing powder for cleaning mugs on a youtube advert and I want to get you that.

How do I very gently lead my lovely boy to the idea mum prefers chocolate to mug cleaning powders? Smile

Obviously whatever gets me he will get a huge hug and big thanks and I will use it

If what you want is a cream bun, you can buy yourself one. Or as many as you want.

You will never have the chance to buy yourself the first present your child ever got you.

My (now ex) husband bought me a Karcher window vac for my birthday one year.... my son put lots more effort in and bought me "something thats in mummys car all the time" a packet of Wrigleys extra! I much preferred the chewys!!!

Theoldwrinkley · 17/08/2020 18:16

Although I think it might not be what I’d choose (cleaning not being my favourite past-time) I really like practical gifts. The lady who bought her Mum envelopes would be right up my street! And other posters have poo-pooed hoover and iron for gifts, I say bring it on! My hubby bought me towels for my 45th birthday. All his colleagues at work thought divorce was imminent. I was delighted.

MamaSharkDooDooDooDooDooDooo · 17/08/2020 18:23

My husband bought me a bin for my birthday the other year.
He has also "bought me" a washing machine, dishwasher and vacuum cleaner over the last few years.
I cannot say strongly enough that even if it is done in a jokey fashion, make sure it is known that household items are not presents..

My husband often mentions how nice he is to me for buying me this stuff as presents which keeps putting him one step closer to a divorce!!

Most DH once bought me Vim as a present. Not for my birthday though. He brought it home in the way most bring flowers! I think kids do like buying things they think will make you smile.

Aww I’d actually love that, I made my partner take my 2 year old in the £ shop just so he could get me things that he actually chose and wanted to get me I loved that fact he actually chose me presents and he was so excited to give me them. I think the fact he came across the video and thought mum would love that is so cute, I doubt a 8 year old would be searching for those kind of videos.

Get his dad to have a word with him man-2-man about it.

YWNBU to explain why this isn’t an appropriate birthday present.

When I was about 8 I bought a similar type of birthday gift for my mother, out of the honest misconception that as she did all the housework, she would like houseworky stuff. She let it be known she wasn’t very happy about it and I never made the same mistake again. Much better for everyone to do that than unknowingly spending £££ over the years on stuff that is hurtful/not wanted.

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/08/2020 20:32

Train him to buy two lovely gifts with every practical present.

My dad once bought my mum some size ten walking socks (she's a 5) wrapped in brown paper and stuck with duct tape. After that I took over.

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 17/08/2020 20:46

I'd be grateful he is even thinking about getting a present... I never wanted gifts ever, all I wanted was a handmade card which I could keep!

LovelyIssues · 17/08/2020 22:31

Bless your DS he sounds so thoughtful!!

This reminds me of the time my dgs (then aged 5) came to visit me on my birthday and almost shoved a gift at me with a frown on his face. I asked him what the matter was and he told me he had wanted to buy me a Batman Cave but 'he' (pointing to his dad) wouldn't let me. I said, but I would have LOVED that and he looked at his dad and said 'See! I told you she would!' Love that kid!

Happynow001 · 18/08/2020 13:40

@midnightstar66

Train him now do he doesn't buy his wife an iron or vacuum for her birthday in years to come lol

Yes - this! But gently.. 🌹

FelicisNox · 18/08/2020 21:03

Definitely a job for dad to handle... get DH to steer him towards the Hotel Chocolate shop.

BathshebaAndGabriel · 18/08/2020 22:18

My children bought me some Cillit Bang for my birthday one year.

Deidre21 · 19/08/2020 09:58

He is too sweet. My daughter makes me cards months in advance for my birthday
I think you should leave him to get this for you. It’s sweet and will be funny in years to come. He is also being practical. His dad could add something nice to it like the night with chocolates.

Deidre21 · 19/08/2020 10:00

Also the fact that he thinks ahead about your birthday shows what a lovely thoughtful boy he is.
