Don't get me wrong I'm touched he's thinking about my birthday next month and I'm sure I will love whatever I end up with but this is not quite what I had in mind

Me what would you like to do tomorrow?
ds go with dad to buy your birthday present
me there's no need to worry about that love
ds but I saw an amazing powder for cleaning mugs on a youtube advert and I want to get you that.

How do I very gently lead my lovely boy to the idea mum prefers chocolate to mug cleaning powders? Smile

Obviously whatever gets me he will get a huge hug and big thanks and I will use it

My DS is 8 and within reason, he and his sister are allowed to buy/make whatever they want for us. I love the fact that they have made a free choice. Of course, this means that last year DS bought a Care Bear for my birthday and a rainbow fleece blanket for Christmas. The year before, he helped make an apron for me because "dinnerladies is your favourite programme".

maggiecate · 16/08/2020 21:51

My brother got my mum the Bullseye quiz book one year. She did like Bullseye but still. Her face was a picture, we laughed about it for years.

YankeeDad · 16/08/2020 22:01

Your DP needs to explain to him that in order for it to be a proper gift, in addition to buying the washing powder, your DS needs to offer to use it and clean up the mugs with it every time you reach for that particular washing powder.

That way either you'll get a genuinely nice gift in the form of mug-cleaning services, or he'll decide to get you chocolate instead Grin

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 16/08/2020 22:05

@DocOfTheBay

I think it’s hilarious. Sweet, sweet boy. Something about the advert obviously caught his enthusiasm.

Please tell me, OP and PP, that you weren’t serious about all this po faced miserable ‘parenting’ advice?

It’s a little boy who thinks he had hit upon a product with near magical powers that makes adults very happy.

He won’t be buying the same thing at 21.

Agreed. I think it's very cute. He's seen something he thinks is amazing and wants to share it with you.
Witchend · 16/08/2020 22:07

I think if you tell him not to and get you chocolate, then he'll be deflated and be one of those males that ends up just buying chocolate because he "doesn't know what they'd like."

My ds has bought me some very imaginative presents, loads of thought and sometimes it is a major hit and other times not. I always thank him and say how nice and try and use it.
I remember one year he wanted to get dh a new razor because he'd seen an advert about one that he thought was better. It was totally out of his price range, but he was thinking with love.

But we're not a family that's upset at practical gifts. I often do get cooking/cleaning stuff-and so would dh, and so would dd1 now she's moved out to self-catered uni. And the dc often get things they would like for school.

Poshjock · 16/08/2020 22:08

My DN was allowed free choice of present picking for me when she was about 5. My first present was an egg timer from the pound shop - the kind you put in the pan with the eggs. She liked the shape and colour of it. I still use it today. The following year I got a magnetic Key Pete novelty thing from the pound shop. He’s still on my noticeboard looking after my keys. These were not my only presents I should add but they ended up being much used and useful despite neither being picked for that purpose!

NoMoreFlowers · 16/08/2020 22:09

I clean my mugs with bleach. I need this powder 😂

Namaste6 · 16/08/2020 22:16

Take the powder gracefully OP. A gift is only a genuine gift when given without interference - especially from an 8 year old. However his little head has resonated this, he clearly thinks this is a wonderful gift for his mum. Don't burst his bubble. Bless him.

When he turns 18 he'll think it's hilarious.

oakleaffy · 16/08/2020 22:18

@listsandbudgets
Are your mugs tea stained? {she asks gingerly}
I only ask as a non tea drinker, I am often surprised at the brown tannin stains in mugs when I do make tea for tea drinkers
I made the mistake of mentioning a specific cleaner for tannins at a family member's house was shot down in flames... 😝
DS drinks tea, and says the tannin in the tea- mug adds to the flavour 😂

Crabeyes · 16/08/2020 22:19

Sadly, as it turns out, as much as I loveherto try new vegetables, swedes taste like shit. But it was definitely the thought that counted!!

Mashed with carrots, butter salt and pepper is the best!

quizqueen · 16/08/2020 22:19

I put diluted Milton in my mugs and then they go in the dishwasher - no scrubbing to do.

I think it is a really sweet idea, too. Dear little Lad :)
Namaste6 · 16/08/2020 22:20

@oakleaffy 🙏

bleach tablets {just a quarter of a tablet} work really well -a tip was on you tube- not sure what is in them...probably a mild bleach like Milton? Domestos is probably just as good...if rather fierce!?
LittlePaintBox · 16/08/2020 22:24

@sixlemons

Bless him, he's found something he thinks he is amazing and he wants to get it for you.

Who cares what it is?

Yes, exactly.

Plenty of time ahead to educate him about 'how to be a good husband'. Hmm

A friend's son, at a similar age, gave her a pack of sanitary towels. He thought it was a real bargain to get 12 towels for such a low price! Grin

listsandbudgets · 16/08/2020 22:27

You know what I've read replies and thought about it.. Im going to say not another word to anyone. Hes a very sweet and kind lad and if he thinks mug cleaner will make me happy..it will because it will be his thought and he will take joy in giving it to me... I will enjoy my sparkling mugs with good grace and he can help me clean them.

Anyway I'm far too fat for chocolate Sad

Feeling mean spirited for my negative attitude

Oh no! I think if my DS had bought Sanitary towels I'd have died laughing...Kudos for him for not being embarrassed to buy them.

That is so good to hear 🥰
oakleaffy · 16/08/2020 22:31

@listsandbudgets
But he might get a box of Chocolates as well :)

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 16/08/2020 22:34

He's going to be looking forward to seeing how happy you are with your sparkling mugs!

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 16/08/2020 22:36

Oh, another miracle product like Vanish Gold.

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 16/08/2020 22:39

OP, I guess in reality he wants it for himself. Is there anything wrong with your mugs that a miracle powder could sort it out? Grin
No offence, some mugs get scratched inside.

Namaste6 · 16/08/2020 22:42

@listsandbudgets Enjoy your birthday and savour the look on his delighted little face! 🙏

sideorderofchips · 16/08/2020 22:44

My. 9 year old wants to get me a new iron and ironing board for mine. Says its a reward for taking care of them all

We need to have a conversation

TokyoSushi · 16/08/2020 22:46

Oh bless him, let him buy it! But also have your DH buy you an extra good present to make up for it!
