AIBU Bin rummaging 😡

Changing username for this as quite frankly it’s embarrassing!

I’m not stickler for food dates. Don’t mind if biscuits, bread etc are out. However, I do tend to stick to use by’s for meat, yogurts etc. I might give slight leeway, but definitely think use by dates are there for a reason!

On the flip side, H is terrible. Thinks you should eat anything, even it is furry, stinks and with a use by date of 5 years ago.

My absolute bugbear is that he bin rummages. He actually rakes through the bin bag demanding to know why it’s been thrown out and ranting about ‘There’s nothing wrong with it.’ Does all the time.

Anyhow, this morning I have thrown creamy coleslaw out that is four dates out of date. I have just caught him eating it with his lunch- he has plucked it out of the bin 😡🤢. It’s honestly made me feel quite stabby.

So AIBU to think he’s a dirty bin ratching bastard with a stomach of steel or should I just give up and embrace the salmonella!

Why don't you just leave stuff that you want to throw away out on the kitchen table and let him decide what he wants to eat or throwaway? Would sa

CeibaTree · 15/08/2020 16:19

Sorry should have said: would save him having to bin rummage and save you being disgusted by said bin rummaging!

Hangingover · 15/08/2020 16:21

If it ain't a Spoony Fucker it's a Bin Wanker

ClementineWoolysocks · 15/08/2020 16:24

That's gross. Would he drop a cheesecake and eat it off the floor?

TenShortStories · 15/08/2020 16:24

Actually getting things back out the bin is a bit much, but I'd get utterly fed up if someone I lived with was forever putting perfectly good food that I wanted to eat into the bin. It's so wasteful and expensive to be throwing away edible food.

Leflic · 15/08/2020 16:28

@Mintychoc1

You must throw away an awful lot of food for this to be an issue. I reckon I chuck out maybe 5 items a year that have gone past their date, and that’s usually because we tried it and no one liked it, so it got abandoned in the fridge. The thing to do is to keep an eye on the use by dates.
This.

The fact you throw enough away for this to cause you an issue is the real problem.

EatDessertFirst · 15/08/2020 16:29

Thats just fucking rank. I couldn't live with have sex with someone who ate food out of the bin. Couldn't even kiss him on his bin-juice-coleslaw mouth. Grim.

I agree judgement should be used when deciding what should be thrown away. Anything dairy, meat and rice especially should be treated skeptically. A lot of bacterial toxins release no smell so the sniff test isn't always reliable.

Chuck food straight in the outside bin. If he is skanky enough to go through that bin, I'd be seriously reconsidering your relationship with the dirty beggar.

Shizzlestix · 15/08/2020 16:29

@DDIJ what’s the purple bin for?

Our council gave us a food waste bin and is now charging for the green garden waste, which used to be both. I’m now totally conflicted where to put greasy cardboard (used to be green bin) and stuff like old envelopes with no plastic (also used to be green bin)

Your DH is rank, OP and this would give me the ick. Definitely tip it out of the container and mix with really horrible rubbish in the outside bin, nappy/dog poo bags on top!

I would😂 My floor though.
TheMumblesofMumbledom · 15/08/2020 16:32

Yeah I'd eat a cheesecake off the floor too. You just can't waste cheesecake 😂

We tend to eat things that might be up to a week out of date . Would eat cheesecake that's been dropped on the floor ( after picking off the dog hairs ) .
But once something is in the bin it stays there .
Can't remember the last time any of us were ill .

BackforGood · 15/08/2020 16:44

I agree with @Mintychoc1 and @Leflic

How much food are you throwing out on a regular basis that this is even an issue ? [cpnfused]

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/08/2020 16:44

I thought that purple bons are only a certain city speciality😂

  • I think if it looks, smells and tastes fine then YABU. You dont have to eat it but if he wants to then dont throw it out. Use by dates are not reliable.*

I’m not 100% but I thought Best Before was a guideline but Use By was a safety label?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/08/2020 16:58

Liverpool has proper in your face purple colour bins for general waste. Really cute actually

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/08/2020 17:00

I take them more as a guide and "you can't sue us after that".

We have 5 bins, too. One for paper & cardboard, one for mixed glass and plastics, one for general waste, one for garden waste and then the little one for food waste.

I'm quite easy going over dates on food, within reason! I actually prefer bread to be stale; doesn't fall apart when I'm dunking it in my soup and I hate all things soggy lol. Dairy and poultry I'm a bit more careful over.
