For thinking the Dyson Hot and Cool might actually cool

Feeling completely conned. Bought the unit directly from Dyson in March this year. It obviously only needed to test out the cooling function when it got warmer. It does nothing. Forget about cooling - it doesn't even move air about well and it is EXTREMELY noisy so I couldn't even sleep with it on.

So I complained to customer services, saying I thought a product called Hot and Cool would actually cool.

Their response.

Good afternoon,

Thanks for your email.

Dyson fans and purifiers have no energy-hungry cooling elements like air conditioning units, they aren't designed to lower the room temperature. Our products cool you, not the room.

They work by circulating the ambient air in the room. The cooling effect comes when the air, dispelled from the amplifier at velocity, passes over the users skin. The higher the fan speed, the cooler the air will feel.

We can only offer to refund your product if it has been purchased directly with Dyson within the last 35 days as per our money back guarantee.

I mean Wtaf does that mean. It neither cools air nor person. I can vouch for that.

AIBU for wanting to get them to take back this £549 lump of uselessness?!!

Please help me by convincing them they need to take this pile of rubbish back and return my money. 😭

A review on the front page of the Dyson website from 2019. Did you do any research?

Hi there, it's Sophie from Dyson.

While on cool mode, the machine will circulate the air in the room and won't actively cool the air as an air conditioner will.

Dyson machines don't reduce the room temperature, rather provide personal cooling through the wind chill effect of air passing over your skin.

Apologies for any disappointment.

msatlantis · 15/08/2020 06:31

We made the same mistake. A lot of money for a fan. Though as a heater it does work very well. Still a lot of money though.

goingtobeokay · 15/08/2020 06:31

Also considering the machine was that expensive why on earth didn't you try send test the cool function in March?

Oysterbabe · 15/08/2020 06:37

We bought one of those and sent it back because it was shit and loud. Bought a £30 fan instead which was better.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 15/08/2020 06:37

They are rubbish. I stayed in an air bnb once that had one and was excited to try it as I love a good gadget. It was hopeless, I have a $12 fan from Kmart that does a better job! I also agree that ceiling fans are fantastic, I only have aircon in the living rooms and kitchen but the ceiling fan in the bedroom does the job even on really hot nights. I also recommend getting a fan with a water tower, if you fill with iced water and set it to mist its lovely and cooling. Think I paid $50 for mine.

Russellbrandshair · 15/08/2020 06:40

Its a posh fan not an air con

I’ve got one. Even as a fan it’s shit. The air flow is pathetic and I’ve got cooler in this heat using a metal standing fan that cost £30 than the Dyson that cost £500. Don’t buy it - it’s rubbish even as a bog standard fan! 😡

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/08/2020 06:49

Is there one Dyson product that actually does what it promises? My experience of their hoovers are that they’re heavy, cumbersome things that don’t pick up dirt from the floor. Their hand dryers in public toilets blow other people’s festering germ-laden water droplets into your face. I wouldn’t trust them to make something that cooled a room anymore than I’d trust then to make a plane that wouldn’t fall out the sky.

cheekaa · 15/08/2020 06:50

I am so grateful to all of you to giving your feedback on Dyson.
After I mentioned to my brother few days ago that I am considering installing air conditioning in my lounge/kitchen and bedroom/ensuite , he kept telling me how expensive that would be to install and run and that I should buy a Dyson instead. Well reading your reviews , not bloody likely.
Bearing in mind with the threat of increase in temperatures over the coming years I am installing air con.
At least I will be able to get on with life rather than just sit in front of a fan.

Hopoindown31 · 15/08/2020 07:00

Like most Dyson products it is just a bog standard idea dressed up with a massive price-tag and their fans are the worst example of it.

HOkieCOkie · 15/08/2020 07:37

Can’t do that as I love mine, I use it to heat my flat in the winter. And in the summer it keeps me lovely and cool.

Coughsyrupsucks · 15/08/2020 07:40

My husband bought one a couple of years ago and it is shit, just a fancy fan.

Last year I bought a portable air con unit and it is fantastic. It’s loud but cools the room down in minutes and you can actually sleep. There isn’t a water tube, it’s a condenser and you shove the hose out of the window.

I still can’t believe we wasted £500 on a fancy Dyson fan when our £12 Argos fan was much better!

lidoshuffle · 15/08/2020 07:46

Another vote for a much cheaper and silent Meaco fan. I bought it on recommendations from MN when I was thinking of a Dyson; so glad I did, it's great.

EnoughAlready2020 · 15/08/2020 09:23

Yes I did do research and the reviews predominantly were great. A few people complaining (like on any product) but no product will ever get 100% great reviews.

For those saying it's like a fan - actually I'd be okay with that but it is the SHITTIEST fan. I've given the Dyson to my teenager and I've taken his £16 Argos one which is much much better. I also found the Dyson do be extremely noisy.

Granted I should have tested the cooling function (sorry the FAN function) back in March, but I genuinely didn't think that brands were allowed to sell products that didn't do what was advertised.

I still maintain a product called "Hot and Cool" should actually "Heat and Cool".

Glad someone posted this as I was researching about the dyson hot and cool.
I had it at the hospital when and after I gave birth. I loved it. It was so good, blew cold air on me, unlike fans that don't necessarily feel cold, less noisy that traditional fans. Which is why I was thinking of getting one, but I'd like the hot and cold air, so I can use all year round for that price tag

GenderApostate19 · 15/08/2020 09:28

Anyone looking for a really decent fan - I have a ‘fochea’ one from Amazon, it’s really quiet and very good for under £50.
It was 28 degrees in our living room on Weds night, I put a large icepack behind the fan, tilted it up towards the ceiling and it brought down the temp by 3 degrees in half an hour.

Russellbrandshair · 15/08/2020 09:29

Is there one Dyson product that actually does what it promises

I’m beginning to wonder! The Dyson hairdryer fried my hair. I sent it back. I’m now lusting after the Tineco hairdryer which apparently blows Dyson out of the water and is half the price

ZaraW · 15/08/2020 09:50

I'm currently using mine as I've just cleaned my ac filters. I agree the price is too expensive but it does a good job. It cools my room well. Level 10 is loud but go below five and it's fine. John Lewis reviews are mostly positive, so surprised most people on here say they hate it.

WindyRose · 15/08/2020 10:15

OP I purchased one of these a year or so ago and found it totally useless. I listed it on Gumtree with lots of calls, the first of those had to drive an hour and was thrilled with his purchase.

Went back to using the cheap pedestal fan which works so much better for cooling.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 15/08/2020 10:25

I mean they offer a 35 day money back returns policy its not their fault you didnt check it in that time frame, i thought everyone checked products straight away for that very reason.

Malin52 · 15/08/2020 10:35

Ha. The cooling is fucking awful. Can't feel a thing if you are over a foot away. The heating on the other hand is amazing. Heats up my study in about 10 minutes from 14c to 24c. Ceiling fans are the only way to go imo. Silent and massively effective.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/08/2020 10:51

Bought one knowing it was just a fan, no blades around with a small child around - it's a rubbish fan! Hoping the heating facility maybe more useful in the winter. Would never buy another!

cautionhot · 15/08/2020 11:17

I really like mine. Granted I'm in Australia so have air con and not relying on it solely, but I find it effective as a fan. The heat function is brilliant.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/08/2020 11:51

Fans are not air con.
This seems to surprise people every year.

EnoughAlready2020 · 15/08/2020 13:21

@FlamingoAndJohn fair enough but then why not call it the Hot and FAN! It's bloody misleading and it's a shit fan anyway.

As mentioned I'm now using a £17 Argos fan and it's bliss. Would have been happy if the Dyson performed at least to that level!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 15/08/2020 13:44

DH got me one a few years ago for hot flushes. I love it. Have it next to me on a table and just switch it on when a flush hits. But my god it is loud! I have to pause the tv or put subtitles on.

Upstairs I have a mini air con unit that I got from amazon. Freeze the filter and fill it with ice cubes and water. Keep it on low at night and it is lovely one you get used to the noise. Ds moans because it makes the hallway cold as well. It's bliss when I'm on nights as I can't open the windows due to twat neighbours.
