Been diagnosed 12 months. Off the gluten since then.
I want a beer. Shall I risk it? What’s the worst that can happen? 😬

Are the Aldi gluten free beers their own brand? And are they just on the “normal beer” shelves?

Natsku · 15/08/2020 07:30

@Thisisnotataste

Don't. Especially for a Coors light Envy not envy Loads of decent gluten free beers. Yes they cost more but vs permanent damage to your gut.... worth it. *@MargotMoon* only chips, hash browns and some salads are GF at McD. Definitely not buns.
That's a pity about McD, in Finland they do GF buns if you ask (though I'm not keen on McDs anyway so I've only bothered when there's been no other option)

OP, stock up on GF beers for the future, some of them are very decent. Just be careful, some are GF and some are very very low gluten so that its classed as GF but if you have more than a few it adds up (though maybe they don't have that kind in the UK? They're popular here in Finland but maybe UK ones are the ones made without any barley malt)

Penguin007 · 15/08/2020 07:34

It's not just the ingredients, it's the risk of cross-contamination in places like Mc D's.

Gunpowder · 15/08/2020 07:40

Our local Chinese restaurant has some gluten free dishes now OP. Might be worth asking just in case!

Penguin007 · 15/08/2020 07:44

My local Thai restaurant makes me special dishes in clean pans, if I order ahead. Chinese is trickier, and I haven't had it for years from a restaurant, but I sometimes make my own version at home with GF soy.

Natsku · 15/08/2020 07:46

Yeah cross-contamination is always a risk, they put it on the receipt to remind you at one fast food place I like, but they should do their best to minimise it (separate kitchen area etc.)

Weebitawks · 15/08/2020 07:59

Peroni do a really nice gluten free beer

Also have loads of GF beers and ciders right now. Grin

Aldi even Blush

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 15/08/2020 09:56

It depends what your symptoms are but once you’ve come off gluten your first attack might be worse.

If I get even a crumb of gluten my intestines complaining viciously about an hour and a half later (and am stuck on loo for about an hour) then I have 2-3 days of joint pain and brain fog. It’s also a higher risk for cancers etc

So don’t. Go for gluten free versions if you have a coeliac diagnosis. If it’s gluten intolerance only then you can decide if it’s worth it

Charlotte2020 · 15/08/2020 10:00

@BitchTitties I'd recommend bath ales Wild Hare or gf cobra. They're the 2 best gf beers that aren't light or weird flavoured.
Being coeliac and pregnant is the worst. Really wanting a cold beer and cannot find 0% & GF 😭 first world probs but I want one!!!!

My GF dad drives from Edinburgh to Yorkshire when the urge for a hand pulled pint of ale gets the better of him. Yes, there's a lot of GF beer on the market. And it's better than nowt. But sometimes you need a freshly poured pint don't you.

Why? Confused Edinburgh has some of the best GF options in the country
TheFutureIs · 15/08/2020 10:47

Brew York have a fab gluten free beer called Cereal Killa.
Brewdog also do a good one, can't remember the name but friends who are coeliac say it's lovely
For your husband tell him to look out for unfined beers, it's all the chemicals put in that cause the headache. Staggeringly Good in Portsmouth do amazing beers that I've never had a hangover from

multivac · 15/08/2020 10:58

Sorry if it's already been said, but be somewhat cautious about 'gluten free' beer. Often it's not that it's been made with non-gluten-containing recipes, but that post-fermentation, it's been tested and found to contain less than 20 parts per million gluten (as is the law if something is labelled 'gluten free'). If you are highly sensitive, like our son, then you could still react. You're better off sticking to beer made from gluten-free grains, like sorghum, buckwheat, millet etc. - but the fact that beers don't have to list their ingredients isn't terribly helpful!

PS - it's the barley you need to watch out for :)

BitchTitties · 15/08/2020 11:03

Thanks for the advice all! ...I’m quite embarrassed this morning, can’t believe I even considered it. I’d had some wine and ran out... Blush so started eyeing up the beer 🙈
Had a glass of water and went to bed instead! Very glad I did, I’d be kicking myself this morning otherwise!

@Charlotte2020 a company called Big Drop do a gluten free and alcohol free lager which I really like.

Rose789 · 15/08/2020 19:50

Google gf Chinese restaurants in your area. My best friend is gf and we go to a Chinese beside us at least once a month. A lot of dishes they will make gf and they are happy to modify recipes for her e.g duck in lettuce parcels rather then pancakes, rice noodles in chow mein.
There are lots of gf beers available, they cost more then regular beer but better to spend a few pound more then risking your health

Hopeisnotastrategy · 16/08/2020 20:18

No, no, no. Coeliac here.

Daura is your friend.

bridgetreilly · 16/08/2020 20:39

Well, it’ll make you feel ill now and do permanent damage to your stomach. Do you really want the beer enough for that?

SamK93 · 16/08/2020 20:43

I have coeliac disease, diagnosed three years ago trust me it's not worth it. I know it's hard, I'm currently pregnant and craving everything with gluten but I know what's gonna happen after will NOT be worth it, never mind long term damage.
