Reversing out of drive

Neighbour complains whenever anyone reverses out of drive. Apparently when house built planning permission stipulated no reversing. Any know what rights are around this? She sends footage to landlord of people reversing out. Police were previously contacted as she was abusive over it. They said it's fine as it's residential road that we're reversing on to

I was with you until the ‘Karen’ comment.

Anyway it’s usually safer to reverse in to a drive, I do it up a steep hill as it terrifies me that a child or animal will run past the back of my car and I won’t see it.

KingOfDogShite · 14/08/2020 20:46

I’d enjoy winding her up to be honest.

DistinguishedCarrot · 14/08/2020 21:13

@chunkyrun

What's a covenant? Nothing was mentioned, found out when landlord received emails with pictures on
Same here.

She'd be getting regular Subject Access Requests from me too requesting copies of any video containing my image...! 😂

DistinguishedCarrot · 14/08/2020 21:14

Oops - wrong quote - meant the original one aimed at me.

Sorry. 3 glasses of wine in on a Friday evening... cheers!

GetUpAgain · 14/08/2020 22:08

I drive in and reverse out, usually there is a lot of traffic on my road so it would hold them up if I reverse in. I just wait however long for a decent gap in traffic to reverse out. So I don't inconvenience anyone.

TwigTheWonderKid · 14/08/2020 22:45

"Well, there's an entire thread full of reasons why people dont do it. Had you bothered to read the thread before posting you'd know why it's not always the safest option 🤦🏻‍♀️"

@AmelieTaylor, an enire thread? That's not strictly (or even slightly) true is it?

maddening · 14/08/2020 23:00

What sort of road is it? If a main road it is safer to pull over and reverse in when there is a gap in traffic so you can drive out rather than reverse across a pavement in to a busy road.

Their claims however of Covenants sounds odd and I would ask for proof, however I would (and do) reverse on to my drive.

SisterAgatha · 14/08/2020 23:02

I’ve never heard this. I only reverse off. Everyone on my road does.

DotBall · 14/08/2020 23:46

Bizarre covenants is a whole new thread...but we’re not allowed to have a cinema situated in any of our (1970s) houses. Or run a business. Or have brick walls between the properties out the back.

maddening · 14/08/2020 23:48

Sister, the highway code says that you should reverse in and drive out if you can, so guidance not a. "you must" etc but it is definitely the safest approach for the majority of drives, with obvious exceptions for some drives.

Osirus · 15/08/2020 01:13

Clutching at straws, perhaps there’s something on the original plot transfers for the estate (covenants)? Do you have a copy of your deeds to check? It will be a TP1.

NewPapaGuinea · 15/08/2020 07:47

Ask her to provide evidence of this stipulation.

chunkyrun · 15/08/2020 08:25

Most bizarre thing, her and her entire family reverse out. She's not fussed about rest of neighbours

A restrictive covenant is put on properties by the builder or owner of the land the property was built on e.g. church, major landowner like Duchy of Cornwall. It states you can't do stuff like keep a beehive or grow grapes to protect the landowner's commercial interests. More modern restrictive covenants include things like not hanging washing up in particular places such as your front garden and not parking commercial vehicles on your drive. Most landowners do not enforce restrictive covenants as the original landowner doesn't exist who put them in the contract, and if the original landowner does exist they tend not to do things accept in extreme cases.

In your case I suggest you first phone the Information Commissioners helpline on Monday during office hours on 0303 123 1113 and get them to clarify the law on her recording you on your drive and on the public road, storing the images and then sharing them with your landlord.

If she then continues with any batshit e.g. makes another complaint to your landlord, get a copy of her written complaint to your landlord with images and contact your local police to report her for harrassment. Say you want them to go around and tell her to leave you alone which includes her stop recording you when you are in your own drive and on the street. Mention what the Information Commissioner told you if relevant.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 16/08/2020 01:37

DM and her neighbour opposite both reversed off their drives, into each other!! It's a quiet street, both must've been checking the road at the same time and moved off at the same time, it was day time so no lights on etc.
We also live on a quiet street, I mainly reverse on, drive off but if there is a car behind me I just pull on forwards so I don't hold them up, and then reverse off next time I go out.

Your neighbour sounds challenging.

Gingerfish91 · 16/08/2020 03:09

I reverse on mostly because I live by a school and so many kids run across driveways without checking. I know a child who was killed on his bike by someone reversing out of a driveway so since then I’ve always reversed on.

Penners99 · 16/08/2020 06:22

OP,if Karen says anything to you then the correct response is "ODFOD"!

JuniperFather · 16/08/2020 06:35

@AmelieTaylor

People might have stated "reasons", but that's just their perception.

I know in one scenario described earlier, I would HATE to be reversing off a steep driveway into a road - lack of visibility could be dangerous. I'd much rather reverse up the slope. I wonder whether people are more anxious about slipping and losing control on the accelerator and hitting their precious house, than reversing with poor visibility and hitting a person.

What is it with reversing in this country anyway? There's usually two or three stories a year in the press of dash cam videos where someone arrives on a narrow road/bridge with lots of traffic behind them, the opposite side has someone blocking the road and it's their role to reverse... but they won't do it! Categorically refuse, mad stand off happens, all because of a fear of reverse gear and a complete unawareness of their car's dimensions and how to use mirrors.

I really respect this. That has been my approach too always. It's the safest way by far.
TitsOutForHarambe · 16/08/2020 06:53

Sounds like she has a lot of problems. I would just continue to leave your property in any reasonable way you see fit and smile and nod along to her rants, and try and avoid her as much as possible.

nancybotwinbloom · 16/08/2020 07:03

So she reverses out herself but has a problem with your household only when you reverse out of your drive? And she films you out of her bedroom window?

Tell her to get fucked. Silly bitch.

What did the landlord say to you?

I would be in and out all day if that was me. Blasting "you see me rolling" and waving.

Trashtara · 16/08/2020 07:13

It's safer to reverse in and forward out but our driveway and the road we live on make it really hard, our driveway entrance is at a slight angle to the road, so when you pull out it's more than a 90 degree turn. Reversing out is much easier and doesn't require a 3 point turn as I do it. I could pull out the 'easy' way but our road is long and very narrow with no turning space so I'd have to go around the block to get on my way to work, around the block is about a mile and 3 sets of traffic lights!

OnTheWheelOfLife · 16/08/2020 07:13

I would get together with everyone else and agree to only reverse out. Gives her something to do, plus she can’t constantly target all of you.

Seriously though do whatever is safest and most comfortable for you. We don’t have a drive at hone but my parents do and they, and us when we go to stay, all drive into it and reverse out of it. It’s a quiet road, it’s an easy manoeuvre, it’s no one else’s business. Ignore her and any abuse she gives you, just smile at her. unless your landlord contacts you to say differently.

JuniperFather · 16/08/2020 07:36

So it's safer to drive off the driveway the Highway Code way, but it means you'd have to do a bit of a turn to be orientated the right direction in the road...

I get it. Convenience always trumps safety where safety can be superceded by reasons of convenience

Yes, it is 'true'

There are plenty, but do your own reading. I'm not going through highlighting them all for you.
