Is new tenant being a CF over free bed?

Carrotcakefiend · 14/08/2020 12:54

So I am pretty sure I ANBU but asking just in case I've had a brain fart here...

I moved out of rented last month, and a new girl (NG) took over the lease. It's unfurnished but I didn't need the old bed, so offered to leave it... And she was keen at the time. I moved out 1st aug, leaving the bed frame (we cleared everything else and left it spotless).

Now NG has bought a mattress that doesn't fit the frame we left, and wants me to come back, dismantle (!) and remove the bedframe we left. For context, we gave it to her for free, and I said at the time that it was perfectly useable but not new... and she saw this bed during the viewing.

AIBU to tell her to FO? How politely do I tell her to FO?

Message her back and tell her she owes you £80 for the bed frame. If she says "I thought you gave it to me" say, oh yeah I did - it's yours now then.

pictish · 14/08/2020 14:22

“I won’t be coming back to get rid of the bed frame for you, no. Think the council do kerbside pick ups if you no longer want it.”

chargeorge · 14/08/2020 14:23

I think you can be as polite as you can with the exact words "FO"

cocavino · 14/08/2020 14:30

Perhaps you could respond that you thought that you were giving her the bed at the time, but that if she was under the impression it was still yours and you are still responsible for it then she should be paying back-rent to you for loan of the bed.

This.

bigdecisionstomake · 14/08/2020 14:33

You are absolutely not being unreasonable to tell her it's her problem to sort at this point. Just a thought though - you have had your deposit back from the landlord? If you haven't, and the new tenant approaches the landlord to remove it they may charge you if they still have your deposit and aren't aware of the arrangement.

damnthatanxiety · 14/08/2020 14:33

'Oh what a shame you bought a mattress that doesn't fit your bed frame...I'm sure you can freecycle it.....' and block.

That. I know that bed frames can be odd sizes. That's why you get a tape measure out and check what you're ordering. Her bed frame, her responsibility.
minnieok · 14/08/2020 14:49

Tell her to put it on Facebook marketplace, I sold mine for £40, old pine people will buy anything (yes they came and checked it first)

jessstan2 · 14/08/2020 14:51

@Aquamarine1029

It's her bed frame now, therefore her problem. Tell her so and then block her.
That.

She was an idiot buying the wrong sized mattress but if she hasn't unwrapped it, surely it can be exchanged. Not your problem though.

simitra · 14/08/2020 14:53

Why even respond? Just block.

ErinBrockovich · 14/08/2020 15:05

Reply ‘Who this?’

viques · 14/08/2020 15:06

play dumb.

Thanks for offering me the bed frame back, but as I explained when I gave it to you , I have no use for it . I am sure you will be able to find a new home for it on free cycle or Facebook.

oakleaffy · 14/08/2020 15:12

NG accepted it, so it is hers.
Someone will take it off her hands. For free.

oakleaffy · 14/08/2020 15:15

How can she have bought “ The wrong sized mattress😂
There is Single, Double and King Size.
She may have wanted a different size, but hard to buy the Wrong Size.
My. Bed frame is 1880 but takes John Lewis standard double mattress👍

mrsBtheparker · 14/08/2020 15:19

Why is she coming to you rather than the LL?

Not even the landlord's responsibility if the flat is let unfurnished.

Mountainpika · 14/08/2020 15:25

Who on earth buys a mattress without measuring the bed first?

FlamingoAndJohn · 14/08/2020 15:28

It’s not as easy as that. As said above Ikea beds are a different size. Also even in UK sizes there are other sizes, like Queen.

It was her responsibility to check the size, not just guess.

NoSquirrels · 14/08/2020 15:44

Yep, just say " Sorry to hear the mattress you bought doesn't fit. Feel free to get rid of the frame if you no longer need it. Maybe pay the favour forward and pass it on via Freecycle or charity? Thanks."

And enter into no more on the subject. She'll figure it out!

Hayyancairo2 · 14/08/2020 16:00

So if she thinks the frame is still yours, it wouldn't be a problem had the mattress she brought actually fitted it. So had it fitted, she would be ok with you knocking on the door saying, I've come for my frame. Would she not say, but you gave it to me!

Skyliner001 · 14/08/2020 16:01

I don't think you even need to bother replying. She accepted it, she bought a mattress it doesn't fit, she needs to get rid of it.

Cheeseandwin5 · 14/08/2020 16:09

If you have it writing that she agreed for you to leave the bed frame than I think you are fine.

The problem I guess is if there has been a misunderstanding or she thinks she never agreed. If she felt like that she would naturally aggrieved that you left stuff that you didn't want to dispose off

TenShortStories · 14/08/2020 16:29

"You bought a mattress that doesn't fit your bed frame? That does sound annoying, and I can see that you need a new bed now. What I can't see is how it is anything to do with me? If for some strange reason you're suggesting that the bed is still mine, then I will be collecting a backdated £20 per week rental when I come to dismantle it. That sounds unfair does it? Do you know many people that loan large items of furniture to strangers for free? Me neither. Good luck sorting your bed situation."

IntermittentParps · 14/08/2020 16:34

I don't get why you're in touch with her at all about this. Where's the landlord?

Block her.

sunglassesonthetable · 14/08/2020 17:44

I was wondering this @Carrotcakefiend* was it an IKEA bed and, if so, did you tell her this?

I do think it's her own fault and she's BU however there could be a grey area if she thought it was a single/double but it was an IKEA size then I can understand the message, although I feel you would have disclosed this and she would have mentioned to you in the message.*

Grey Area????

TAPEMEASURE🙄
