Lazy Stereotypical imagery used by National Allotment Society to promote National Allotment week

Apparently, it is National Allotments week this week and as an allotment holder I was disappointed by the lazy Stereotypical imagery that was used to represent Allotment users by the National Allotment Society.

Come on NAS!, It is 2020, there is no age or racial diversity in this picture, no children either!

At least there I suppose is a woman pictured on there and not just old white blokes with flat caps on argh!

I thought they were trying to make the pastime more inclusive and reflect general society. I feel like I have reverted to the 19th Century. AIBU? Sad

maybe their initiative is to change their current image and to become all inclusive Grin

SerenityNowwwww · 14/08/2020 10:04

Isn’t that Windy Miller pushing the barrow?

TheSpottedZebra · 14/08/2020 10:04

Of course the woman is in pink, OF COURSE!

KingOfDogShite · 14/08/2020 10:06

Tiresome isn’t it.

CheshireChat · 14/08/2020 10:08

That's very- "we know our target demographic and we'd like to keep it that way, thank you very much".

And also why do they all look like they're auditioning for the hunchback of Notre Dame?! Is it because gasp they're elderly

Finfintytint · 14/08/2020 10:09

Lazy and stereotypical imaging indeed. One of my local Facebook pages is pushing the council to provide allotments. From what I can see it’s people with young families who are asking for it which is brilliant- those least likely to have enough garden space to grow stuff.

GoshHashana · 14/08/2020 10:09

The person at the front identifies as non-binary, and your man in the blue coat is trans-racial, so...

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 14/08/2020 10:12

Of course the woman is in pink, OF COURSE!

How else are we supposed to know she's a woman?

Morfin · 14/08/2020 10:17

And of course the woman is holding a watering can, not the heavy manly tools, they are only for men.

Do people really get worked up about this, genuine question. Because I don’t 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just couldn’t care less. A colleague is more bothered about feminist issues than I am and he gets on my nerves. Often.

timesareachanging · 14/08/2020 10:55

Who cares...🤷🏻‍♀️

TheSpottedZebra · 14/08/2020 11:01

Well, I care, times (ironic username, no?) / Derek - because representation matters.

SerenityNowwwww · 14/08/2020 11:02

It’s a cute visual. It doesn’t bother me - but the age of the little people seems a bit old and why is the first one dressed like ye olde county bumpkin?

I get more irritated when they really break their necks trying to include one black person, one Asian person, one ME person, one white person, one in a wheelchair, one with one leg, one with a guide dog, one ‘gender bin conforming’, one gay person, one..... etc etc etc.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 14/08/2020 11:03

I walked though my local allotments once to be invited into a shed by an man old enough to be my grandfather who said he'd "change my life" Envy

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 14/08/2020 11:05

God, people get so worked up about very insignificant issues.

Finfintytint · 14/08/2020 11:06

Flavia, if enough people ask for allotments then the council should provide them. It’s not always a case of waiting for one.

Lasttraintolondon · 14/08/2020 11:13

OP thank God we've got you on hand to vet whether bland and non-offensive leaflets and posters are appropriate. Maybe you should start your own allotment splinter group. That would show them.

Meanwhile my local village is having a cake sale, it's time for you to spring into action and save us all again!

Oh I see, Thankyou. Nope still not bothered.
PaulaTrilloe · 14/08/2020 11:42

Laughing at the Dead mans shoes comment! Just need to wait another 20 years for an allotment plot then it's like getting a school place at Eton.
Agree imagery is retro or is that dated?

thepeopleversuswork · 14/08/2020 11:47

I wouldn't man the barricades over it (and presumably its being done on a shoestring). It is mildly annoying but I've seen more egregious stereotypes being perpetrated in my time.

mrsBtheparker · 14/08/2020 12:20

I do envy those of you who have so much time on your hands that you can get worked up about every tiny thing and find 'offence' so easily! How many people would the poster need to accommodated all the variations of diversity?

OneForMeToo · 14/08/2020 12:35

Our allotments have spaces coming up this this Christmas Grin and it’s full off young families 🤫

Yeah this.

Ugh, yes. It's a very obvious "diversity for show" which makes my skin crawl. Not with cartoon drawings necessarily, but in print ads, school/company websites etc.
