Metal water bottles - worth it?

I’m looking on amazon and like the fact they keep cold drinks cold. However they seem to be about £20-£25 for the original ones which gets expensive when buying 3!! I’ve seen some for £10 ish too which is still a bit expensive for a water bottle but wondering if it would be as good as the more expensive ones? Can anyone recommend one to me? Are the cheaper ones just as good? Can you get them for less than £10 a bottle?

I use them all the time. Keeps drinks cold and no yucky plasticky taste.

I also have a S’well 500ml bottle, I got the lid with a loop.

It was expensive but it’s brilliant. As everyone says, it keeps water cold and free of any taint all day and I now live in a hot climate. My lid has a couple of small dints after dropping or knocking it many times, but the bottle remains immaculate.
It has had a massive impact on both my water consumption and my plastic waste. I am bereft if I fly Ryanair microbag only and have to leave it behind.

I got DH one a few months after I got mine and he would say the same. It is by my side now and his is on the coffee table in front of him Smile

I bought a cheap one from poundland and hated it, my water tasted of metal and it put me off the (not as) cheap ones from Wilko etc.

I have an expensive one from Canada now and I absolutely love it. I totally recommend getting a decent one.

I've got a couple of chillys ones and some non branded. They all work but the chillys feel much better quality and they're much sturdier

KilljoysDutch · 13/08/2020 22:34

I have a cheap amazon one and it's been amazing through the heatwave, my drinks stay really cold and I've dropped it a million times but it only has a small dent in the lid. Pretty sure I got a code from Vipon too making it about £5 or so.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 13/08/2020 22:34

I’ve just looked on the Tesco website and couldn’t see any. Thanks I will look for a cheaper one I think.

I got one of the Tesco ones when they were on offer and love it. My bf bought one off amazon and it isn’t as good but was about the same price

KilljoysDutch · 13/08/2020 22:36

Just checked and I did indeed use a vipon code.

put XKPT-8HDRMX-3DHZBW in the code box at checkout and it'll take the bottle down to £6.30 for you.

HollyHocks13 · 13/08/2020 22:36

They are amazing. We were in inland southern Spain in a heatwave a few years ago and even at 45 degrees or more heat, my water stayed completely ice cold. I have a cheaper brand from Amazon - it's called Moon I think..?

menofharlech · 13/08/2020 22:37

I have a Tesco one which I got for £5 on offer. I have a chillys one for work which I got in tk maxx for about a tenner I think.

TK Maxx are a great bet if you have one near you. They always have loads. I got one with monkeys on it which makes me happy.

LivePositively · 13/08/2020 22:38

I've got a Built New York one, I love it. Keeps water cold for ages and there's no condensation on the outside so you can throw it in your bag without making things wet and it's vacuumed sealed so no leaks. It holds a pint so I can keep track of how much I'm drinking. Doesn't make the water taste funny either.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 13/08/2020 22:40

I loved my original whales chillys which I left in the boot of a taxi in New York 😪😪😪😪 My replacement is a rose gold one and functionally is still great but has got scratched & bashed and it shows.
Dd1 has a £5 Wilkos one which works fine.

KatherineJaneway · 13/08/2020 22:41

Personally, my answer is yes. I really dislike tepid water and want my water fridge cold. I purchased a S'well bottle from John Lewis and haven't regretted it yet. Yes it can be a cost but it isn’t a product that quickly wears out.

crazytapirlady · 13/08/2020 22:42

Mine cost £4 from Primark and is as good as the fancy ones I’ve tried! Lots of fun patterns too, I have a funky tropical one with a gold top.

OhKnackers · 13/08/2020 22:43

I got mine from wilkos for £5 :)

Lockdownlumpy · 13/08/2020 22:44

I've had a wilko cheapy one for a couple of years. Was about £4. Doesn't leak.
Went to beach abroad last week with it, after all day in sun (37 deg) water was still lovely and cold. Not sure I'd spend more on a chillys or other branded one.

ChangeOfNameNeeded07 · 13/08/2020 22:46

Wilko has them for £5. Water stays cool for ages. In funky colours, too!

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 13/08/2020 22:50

I have a big metal cup, (not to be confused with full metal jacket arf arf). I prefer it to the bottles, as I can put ice in it, (ice cubes won't fit through the bottle neck). It keeps drinks cold or hot and the ice cubes often don't even melt when I put cold drinks in it. The only thing is, obviously you can't put it in your handbag or it leaks.

motherstongue · 13/08/2020 22:50

I bought a personalised Chilly’s one for my DS for taking to Uni. As you can mix and match the lids etc I got it made in the colours of his football team which he thought was very cool (I don’t achieve that status very often 😁). He fills it with hot chocolate in the winter and it keeps it lovely and warm with no milky skin forming.
DD got one too for school and used it constantly, really handy being personalised when lots of friends have similar bottles. She loves it

SpringSunshineandTulips · 13/08/2020 22:51

@KilljoysDutch. Thank you. That is so kind. I will look at that in the morning.

We have a selection:

Me - an Amazon job (£10) selected as it has a screw top and a straw top - have it with me now will post a pic in a min. And a chilly.
DH - has a 750ml super sparrow, also amazon
DD - Tesco £6 (she liked the pattern)
DS - wilko £5

They all perform the same although I do like mine with the straw. Wide neck means I can put ice in and even with the straw top it still stays cold for hours and hours...

Metal water bottles - worth it?
rosiejaune · 13/08/2020 22:54

@dootball

They are also pretty much indestructible (depending on the lid type)

The were pretty cheap in Millets the other day (and some other camping shops too)

One thing to note though - it takes a lot longer to call the water down in the fridge!

Why not just keep a jug of water in the fridge and fill your bottle from it?
Beautiful3 · 13/08/2020 22:54

Mines a sho bottle. Ive had it for years, it keeps water cold and coffee hot for hours. Bought smaller versions for the kids. We love them!

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 13/08/2020 22:56

I've got a Built one and its great, keeps it really cold and actually helps me remember to drink water! You can use it for hot drinks too apparently but I haven't tried that yet.
