Just that really. He has just said that an announcement will be made within the next couple of hours. He didn't know how much notice will be given regarding travelling back to the UK but said that The Netherlands, France and Malta will be added to the list of countries which will require you to be quarantined for 14 days on rtn.

It's people entering other EU countries from the UK who should be quarantined surely? Seems a bit backwards quarantining people returning to the country with the highest rate of Corona deaths per head of population from countries with slightly lower rates...

MissCadoganTate · 13/08/2020 21:21

Apologies, I meant on your rtn to the UK.

Well all three are showing steep upwards trends in new cases. Malta has done well so far, with only 9 deaths, but their projections are not looking so great unfortunately.

lljkk · 13/08/2020 21:23

Netherlands is the half-Swedish model, I think -- has looser control attitudes, anyway. NE is normally grouped with Scandinavia in social/health care models, but has been conveniently left out by people who don't like the Swedish covid response strategy & want to compare with DK, FI, NO instead to make Sweden look especially bad.... I'm off to find the case or death counts for NE, FR & Malta.

lljkk · 13/08/2020 21:26

What perturbs me about these charts is that the y-axis varies; UK could be going up as much as Malta but you can't SEE it for UK since the scale is so different. Oh well. I know someone on hols in France right now, what a pain for them. :(

I didn't realise that the Netherlands used or half used the same model as Sweden.

Is the increase in cases in Malta due to tourists?

France, NE & UK last 2 weeks. NE & France are on linear+ increase trajectory, tbf.

Dutch response is between Sweden and most of Europe, is what many commentators say.

This should have been announced yesterday and certainly not an announcement late at night. Give people more chance to cancel.

If you'd plan to travel at the weekend even for over a week, you could probably not observe 14 days quarantine on return before schools go back.

MissCadoganTate · 13/08/2020 21:38

I agree re the timing of the announcement. It seems v unfair and unnecessary to do it so late in the evening.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 13/08/2020 21:39

Where did he say this?

AgentJohnson · 13/08/2020 21:50

I don’t think the Dutch are using a model, the Ditch government is using the ‘what can we get away with, that won’t cause a revolt’ approach. If the Dutch government said that people returning from France would have to quarantine, there would be a riot.

Dee1975 · 13/08/2020 21:57

Just been announced ...

MissCadoganTate · 13/08/2020 22:01

Yes, it's just been announced.

It comes into force at 4am on Sunday. God help those trying to get back.

I trusted Simon Calder to be accurate. Still 10pm on a Thursday evening is just bad timing.

Is it done now to reduce talk about exam results? Hate the female Home Secretary who will no doubt be blamed, instead of the male Education Secretary.

4am Saturday- even less time
Glittertwins · 13/08/2020 22:09

BBC says 4am Saturday whereas DM report on above link says Sunday
Says it all in getting an accurate report for those trying to get back.

God help those trying to get back.

Why? Genuine question. They can still come back. Just have to stay stuck in the house for 2 weeks.

lovestea · 13/08/2020 22:24

Because some of those returning need to go back to work?

It's a quarantine, they're not shutting the borders.
MissCadoganTate · 13/08/2020 22:38

Because they'll be a rush to change flights and ferries in order to get back before 4am. If you can't wfh then you're stuffed.

Reporting 4am Saturday on sky news too. Doesn't give people a lot of time to get back if they need to

Deaths have got nothing to do with it.

There is a higher percentage of the population in France infected at the moment and it's rising quickly.

Despite our previous mistakes it is not as prevalent in the UK this week. That may change and the French may enforce quarantine on us in the future but at this time it is not really justified given the level of infections here.
