Maggot horror - is it just me?

I went to take the kitchen bin out earlier and as I tried to double bag it before taking it out the bag broke and I saw a fly come out, then some maggots fell on the floor! shivers
I am so scared of maggots it was my worst nightmare, one even landed on my foot! I was sweating, shaking and hyperventilating, I am honestly traumatised!
I always stay on top of housework and never leave any food out, and this bin is brand new with a tightly shut lid, I just can't believe it!
I feel like I am a disgusting person with an unhygienic house :( has this happened to anyone before?

FadedRed you're braver than me, best thing we ever got in our new kitchen.

dayswithaY · 13/08/2020 20:53

My outside food bin used to be crawling with maggots every week, no matter what I did. Then I moved it from one side of the driveway to the other and the flies completely leave it alone and no more maggots.

ComeOnGordon · 13/08/2020 20:53

Not in the UK - somewhere a bit hotter and we’re not allowed to put any plastic bags in our outside food bin - not even the compostable ones. So food goes into the outside bin in brown paper bags. You can imagine how many maggots are crawling in it. The neighbour told me to leave it open to let the birds feast on them which is great until it rained today while I was at work....it’s now maggot soup 🤮

59giggles · 13/08/2020 21:01

Oh my god thank you I feel less alone! I am glad it is not just me who feels this way, I know it's irrational as they are so small and harmless but just the way they move and the fact that when there is one there are probably hundreds, and that they look so dirty ewwww

Some of these stories made me laugh and some made my skin crawl! Why would anyone put maggots in their mouth!

Really worried about the PP who said they've kept coming back in the kitchen bin though. Are they going to come back?? How do I make sure they don't??

I feel like I got pretty lucky as we've always put food waste in the bin and have only ever had maggots once before, in the outside bin. But my DH had sorted it all out by the time I had got home. Quite proud of myself for dealing with it on my own today actually !

I hate maggots but if we do have any I am brave and take them outside for the chickens, who bloody love them!

Vivana · 13/08/2020 21:54

Cannot stand them. Had some today and soon cleared the bin n cleaned it. Will not help next summer when they will be doing 3 weekly collections it's ridiculous.

Thedogscollar · 13/08/2020 22:00

@59giggles OMG could have written your post. I am a woman of a certain age work in NHS seen some gory sights through the years however the sight of maggots tip me over into hysteria.
Had maggots other week in food bin well just couldn't deal with it husband had to sort them out with boiling water.
Maggots and bloody flies with bloody Covid to top it all off. What a shit year.

dentydown · 13/08/2020 22:07

Maggots don’t worry me. We have ants that take them away!

GrolliffetheDragon · 14/08/2020 00:02

We have cats so we get to see quite a few, it's disturbing how quickly you can go from no maggots in a bowl of cat food to it being a disgusting, wriggling mass.

And the used litter in the bin outside attracts the flies as well.

I tip the maggots out for the birds usually.

Interesting idea about freezing the food waste though, but DH would never agree unless we bought a separate freezer just for that.

hilariousnamehere · 14/08/2020 00:10

@GrolliffetheDragon ick! My two are such piglets the flies don't stand a chance, they inhale their food 😂

I've found a good dose of fly spray every time I open my bin box does the job reasonably well - I'm not normally that squeamish but maggots make me feel sick!

Onesailwait · 14/08/2020 00:16

Yuk, we had them in the outside bin they were spilling out, luckily the crows swooped in &,ate them. When I pulled my bins out this morning there were 2 raccoons hiding behind it, prob trying to knock it over. Scared the crap out me. Dh can do it from now on.

Ericaequites · 14/08/2020 00:35

Put a handful of mothballs in the bottom of the bin. It kills the fly eggs. I am an American, and never knew there were professional bin cleaners.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 14/08/2020 00:39

I feel your pain. They are the apocalyptic spawn of satan straight from hell! I can deal with spiders and other bugs but not maggots or other swarmy things 🤢

Ex used to go fishing and forget about them in the shed ARGHHHHHHHHH

Riv12345 · 14/08/2020 09:18

Black wheely bin just been emptied

OMG maggots maggots
I have been spraying fly killer in the bin as well.

I've seen them before in there but today is horrendous 🤮
They are even at the sides

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 14/08/2020 09:30

Ah you lucky people - think of me. My wheelie bin gets emptied every 3 weeks, yes three!

It smelt lush this week.... Envy < not envy.

Felifox · 14/08/2020 10:33

I don't use a kitchen bin in hot weather but put food rubbish in nappy sacks and straight in the rubbish bin, outside kitchen, use bin powder*. Also wash recycling thoroughly and wash out cat food pouches. When I got up at 7am to put the weekly bin bag out I had a couple of maggots., literally a couple. So filled the bin with bleach water. (Next year we will have weekly food waste with two weekly collection of rubbish)

*Be careful that animals can't get at any rubbish if you use bin powder.

hoistbymyownzombiepetard · 14/08/2020 11:18

Maggots have been used throughout history for wound healing. They are very effective

...runs away.

Longdistance · 14/08/2020 11:22

My df was telling me she’d seen maggots and a few popped out when she removed the bag 🤮 couldn’t not share my experience of Oz in fly season and them crawling out my bin. Some made to to the under stair cupboard where they turned into flies 🤢

Elai1978 · 14/08/2020 11:23

Buy them by the pint and keep them in the fridge.

Em8725 · 14/08/2020 11:37

We had them in the kitchen bin this week. We don’t get wheely bins and just have to use black sacks. Grim. It made me feel a bit sick 🤢

Bloomburger · 14/08/2020 11:48

Get a waste disposal unit fitted under your sink if you can. We've never had a problem with flies or maggots because there's no food or residue in the bin as I'm pretty scrupulous about washing out all of the food containers before they go in the recycling too.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 14/08/2020 11:53

I just rinse the post bin day maggots onto my lawn and watch the birds feast.

More likely they weren’t maggot but solider fly who are attracted to food waste but who’s larve look like maggots.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 14/08/2020 11:59

They are still used now for wounds that won’t heal as it’s less invasive than manually debriding wounds.

Oldraver · 14/08/2020 11:59

I detest the horrible things with a passion, so try to keep then away as much as possible.

All waste food as in scraped off plates, bones etc go in a tupperware box in the freezer and are put in the outside food bin on bin day. I try and keep the caddy down to veg peelings/bread.

So the food bin should be as clean as it could be but I have still seen it flow blown before

My wheelie bin is also cleaned as we dont put any food in there and wash any food packagine...te fuckers have still laid eggs in the folds of the bin bag
