Maggot horror - is it just me?

I went to take the kitchen bin out earlier and as I tried to double bag it before taking it out the bag broke and I saw a fly come out, then some maggots fell on the floor! shivers
I am so scared of maggots it was my worst nightmare, one even landed on my foot! I was sweating, shaking and hyperventilating, I am honestly traumatised!
I always stay on top of housework and never leave any food out, and this bin is brand new with a tightly shut lid, I just can't believe it!
I feel like I am a disgusting person with an unhygienic house :( has this happened to anyone before?

I had to empty my wheelie bin today and clean all of the maggots out with the hose.

I had to double bag the double bagged bags.

I am not terrified of them but I would freak the fuck out of one went on me.

I hate them too.

@Snog
Sorry only just realised that you have already posted about this!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 13/08/2020 20:17

My black wheelie bin is crawling, it’s the weather. I’ve never had them in the kitchen bin though.

Grumpymum789 · 13/08/2020 20:19

I’m not putting food waste in my kitchen bin at the moment due to flies. It’s so hot and as we’ve got windows open lots of flies are coming in and circling the bin.

CherryCocktails · 13/08/2020 20:21

@SerenityNowwwww 😳😯😯 That hover would be in the bin pronto! Maggots and all!

I had maggots in my outside bin a couple of weeks ago. Luckily it was bin day so it got emptied then I washed the bin out with boiling water and bleach. All the maggots went and I read the boiling water kills the eggs...

madcatladyforever · 13/08/2020 20:23

It happens most summers, I am now very careful what I put in the bin. Trouble is we only have 2 weekly collections here and the flies get to the bins wherever we put them.

Some advice, OP- never watch the Doctor Who DVD called "The Green Death". You won't like the giant, killer maggots!

The80sweregreat · 13/08/2020 20:30

We have a bin cleaning man who will clean our green bin each month ! His a god send , although I did have to clean it myself the other day as it was rank.
I hate maggots and could never be a fisherman. The look of them crawling around is horrible.

Rebelwithallthecause · 13/08/2020 20:31

I put bun buddy in the outside buns this time of year.
No flies or maggots now

Rebelwithallthecause · 13/08/2020 20:32

That should say Bin Buddy

Oh, and again this year, around the end of April I reported a house plant and put the old put out in the garden. I thought I could use it for something out there. A few days later, maggots in the bottom. There was nothing but I little bit of soil and maggots 🤢
What did you report it for, was it not observing social distancing?

I remember as a child coming back from our annual seaside holiday to a horrible smell in the kitchen. The remains of a roast chicken had accidentally been left in the oven and when my dad took it out it was seething with maggots.

Anydreamwilldo12 · 13/08/2020 20:33

Fly spray in the bin every couple of days will kill them. Its bloody horrible when you open the bin and its crawling.

Rebelwithallthecause · 13/08/2020 20:33

This stuff

Maggot horror - is it just me?
QuestionableMouse · 13/08/2020 20:34

@Babdoc

Aw, poor maggots, they don’t deserve such a bad press! Would you hate them less if you knew they were used in wound healing, to nibble off necrotic tissue? Think of them as little wriggling surgeons... Or perhaps I’m not helping. Grin
Not the ones that you'd find in a bin.

I've just had them in my wheely bin. Tipped them onto the grass and let the birds have a feast. I don't put much food waste in there but it only takes a tiny bit to get the buggers.

Supertree · 13/08/2020 20:36

Yep, they are gross. I had some in my food bin years ago because I had some meat in there. It tipped over and the all went spilling onto the floor. I was so disgusted.

I actually remember playing with maggots as a child. My dad also kept them in the fridge for fishing and I didn’t really understand what they were. I remember sort of raking my fingers through the tub and playing with them the way you might a tub of sand or rice 🤢 I also put them in my mouth because I’d seen my dad do it and I wanted to be like him. It was only when I was a teenager that I realised what I’d been doing!

Yes the maggots were scary but if you watch until the end however when they hatch into giant flies you will be falling about as they looked ridiculous.
Pesimistic · 13/08/2020 20:40

when me and my sister were kids we had a plastic toy kids kitchen and we played with it in the garden and one summer we had put a chicken carcass in the oven and forgot about it for a few days when we opened the door maggots cascaded down the front of this plastic kitchen. Every time someone brings up maggots I get that image in my head. I think my mum and dad threw the whole kitchen away after that.

Mammyloveswine · 13/08/2020 20:40

I have never had maggots in either my kitchen bin or wheelie bin but I am dreading it happening!!! 😭😭

Sailingblue · 13/08/2020 20:40

My food bin was crawling with them this week. I hosed out hundreds of the bastards every night. It was finally collected today and I hope there were no more left for the binmen to see. It must be horrid in this heat for them.

Sailingblue · 13/08/2020 20:41

Oh also I think the flies go for banana skins. I’ve now put ours inside mesh bag and we’ve had far fewer flies in this week despite all the windows being open.

SerenityNowwwww · 13/08/2020 20:42

I remember when my old boss went on holiday and there was a power cut early on. She had a chest freezer in the garden shed full of meat... it was summer, it was hot, the freezer almost walked out of the shed by itself!

SerenDippitty · 13/08/2020 20:46

Our food waste caddy lives in the cupboard under the sink so no flies can get in to lay eggs.

TurnUpTheHeat · 13/08/2020 20:47

Have none of your boys ever done maggot racing at beavers or cubs - or been fishingGrin

Double wrap, Keyes fluid, boiling water.

han01uk · 13/08/2020 20:48

Our black wheelie bin full of maggots. I have tried bleach and boiling water, which did nothing except made them all scurry to the top! They can't escape, and i have put a brick on top to be sure, but every time I open it I dread it, and just thinking about them all in there actually makes my skin crawl. Bin wont be emptied for another 5 days too... 🙈
