Colleagues who have come back after being furloughed doing as little as possible.

For clarification I was not furloughed and worked through having suspected coronovirus (my choice). It has taken me a long while to feel anything close to normal but wanted to do as much as I could to help my boss out during a difficult time. A lot of staff were furloughed and are only now starting to come back. The thing is, even though they don't do the same job as me they are doing the very bare minimum and it is so frustrating. They seem to be doing less than they were before and nothing is being said. They are meant to fill up the stationary so that it is available just to lift when needed - they are now just dumping it in a cupboard and you have to fight your way through a pile of boxes to find what you need and then open it and sort it out. I am getting really pissed off. Oh and they were chatting most of the day and they aren't even trying to hide it. Do some people have no work ethic at all? Really pissing me off.

I would assume OP worked from home, bloody hell peeps

OP, it's a known "thing" that when people have had a significant amount of time off, their productivity is lower when they return.

You would think the opposite - they must have been bored! They must be so eager to return! No - inertia has taken over and it will take some time to be back to full productivity.

This can even be seen in tiny examples like the computer system going down in a call centre, leaving every sales agent without work. If it goes on for longer than a half hour, it kills productivity for the rest of the day. (Which is why savvy team managers take their teams off the floor and play energiser games with them, but I digress.)

Anyway - have a whinge to your line manager and let them sort it. Especially the stationery - that's a trip hazard as well as just lazy.

Lilybet1980 · 11/08/2020 19:57

Where did OP say they went into work with suspected Covid? They said they continued to work. I would assume that was from home (which is exactly what quite a few of my colleagues did).

I hear you OP. Pretty annoying if those who’ve been furloughed continue to get paid for minimal effort. Maybe they are assuming their jobs will go at some point anyway?

jessstan2 · 11/08/2020 20:00

It will take people a little time to get back into the swim of things.

You were very wrong to go to work if you suspected you had coronavirus. However, you don't know that you had it (people I know who contracted the virus were in no doubt at all!), an antibody test would tell you if you did.

Pebblexox · 11/08/2020 20:01

The only thing I've taken from this is working with suspected covid. Was this in a work environment? Or from home?
You sound resentful that they were furloughed, whilst you still worked. Of course people going back are going to struggle to settle into a new routine. People have been out of work for months (not by their own choice) give them time.

JennaS85 · 11/08/2020 20:02

Hi, I have the same issue. I have worked all the way through and there are some that were on furlough for 4 months that are doing very little and others that are now back on part time furlough that store their work up and handover for the days they are off... I have a busy job and a home to run and I am sick of working all hours to cover for the lazy ones. I don't want to moan to my bosses, because the place is so clicky and everyone seems to love everyone.... what do I do!?

SoupDragon · 11/08/2020 20:04

worked through having suspected coronovirus (my choice)

🙄

TildaTurnip · 11/08/2020 20:07

I assumed OP meant at home.

I wonder if those furloughed have lost stamina. I think this may be a real thing with those who’ve not worked for a while.

Wherestheline · 11/08/2020 20:07

I’m sure going to work with suspected Covid is being treated with the same level of disciplinary as gross misconduct in most places of work.

Yes they should pull their weight more but give them time to get back into the swing of things.

MulticolourMophead · 11/08/2020 20:08

It's going to take me a few days to be back to full swing when I come off furlough.

I'll need to catch up with how the work has changed, get some new kit for wfh (have to have an appointment to see IT), check through emails, and so on. As you can still do training while furloughed, I'm trying to help myself by accessing our yearly mandatory refreshers on H&S, data protection, GDPR, etc, as I'll need to be up to date when I'm back working.

I'll be doing my best to be up to speed as soon as possible, but the rules implemented by my organisation mean I can't actually get the kit, check emails, etc before hand because it's deemed work, which I'm not to do. So I'm not going to be hitting the ground running.

TatianaBis · 11/08/2020 20:14

Working through Covid is not a wise choice. Cf Boris Johnson.

TatianaBis · 11/08/2020 20:15

I assumed OP meant from home. Working with the virus is a poor choice even from home due to the potential complications.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 11/08/2020 20:20

you are not a hero working through.
no one thanks you for working when ill

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 11/08/2020 20:21

did they come back yesterday?
i guess they have lots to catch up on

Northernsoullover · 11/08/2020 20:23

I cannot go beyond working with suspected covid. Please tell us that was wfh?

NiceGerbil · 11/08/2020 20:26

I think it will take people a while to get back into it.

It has been and continues to be a very weird situation.

I have been WFH ft and am really struggling to keep motivated tbh. Just as an aside. I expect my colleagues have noticed and that bothers me but I just can't get going properly.

1Morewineplease · 11/08/2020 20:26

You need to come back on here and tell us if you literally went to work with suspected Covid.
If that’s the case then you’re going to get a real drubbing on here.
Furlough wasn’t fun for so many people, particularly as it became very clear, quite early on that many jobs would disappear post lockdown.
I also feel that many people will have reconnected with their families and have decided that their previous work/life balance was skewed and that home life is far more important so that the trivia associated with many jobs which may have been done on a goodwill gesture , has fallen by the wayside.
So many, many people feel very differently about their jobs now.

Drip feed in 3....2......1

AskingforaBaskin · 11/08/2020 20:27

I can't believe you told on yourself like that 😂

ZoeTurtle · 11/08/2020 20:30

Maybe they're struggling with motivation after being told they aren't necessary to the business for the past five months?

Or maybe they realise, unlike you, that the company would drop any of you in a heartbeat if it wanted to. Your bosses don't think you're wonderful for working through illness, they think you're a mug.

PintOfGin · 11/08/2020 20:31

YABU- purely because you went to work with suspected covid! You sound like you want a medal for that, as if it's something to be proud of. Jesus wept!

SengaStrawberry · 11/08/2020 20:33

I hope if you worked it was from home. I’d also hazard it wasn’t worth it, you’re just a number to your boss and he would have replaced you in the blink of an eye if the worst had happened.

I didn’t get Covid but I was made redundant from a job I worked my arse off in and made myself ill over. When push came to shove they didn’t care about me. I won’t be made a mug of again. I’ll do my work and that’s it.

SengaStrawberry · 11/08/2020 20:33

WTF

If you thought you had Corona why on earth were you at work.

People have been off for months. Cut them some slack getting back into the rhythm.

You are so obsessed with work that you aren’t seeing things clearly.

Why was it so important that you go to work and put many people at risk.

Thewheelsfelloffthebus · 11/08/2020 20:36

I’m going to assume that you worked from home as if you didn’t you’re more of a liability than anyone else
I’ve worked my arse off during covid but it’s my own business. I would imagine that it’s taking people a while to get back into the swing of things. It’s been a tough year.

mellicauli · 11/08/2020 20:37

Maybe after a few months doing other things they've realised there's more to life than putting stationery in a cupboard?
