To keep my 18 month old inside during this heat?

Swaddleblanket · 11/08/2020 18:08

I live near London and it’s in the 30s at the minute and has been since last Friday. It feels so hot outside so I take my toddler out in the morning and then for the rest of the day we are (bored) inside.

Even with sun cream it feels crazy hot and I feel like I should keep him out of it. So we have stayed indoors now Fromm 11ish since last Friday.

Should I be taking him out am I over reacting??

I don't think you are being unreasonable at all but having a 20 month old myself I can imagine it's getting a bit like cabin fever by tea time. Could you put his coolest clothes on, attempt a sunhat and lather him in suncream for a walk out for an ice cream? See how he copes and if it's unbearable for him I'm sure he will cope in the house for the next few days!

I have twin one year olds and we are staying in. We went out on Friday and they got wet through with sweat, even though they were well shaded in the Buggy. I won’t risk taking them out again until it is cooler. We are quite bored.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/08/2020 18:33

Mine are 7 & 9 and naturally stay in around the hottest times of the day and play in the garden more in the morning/ evening. Pretry sensible of them!

Getting out is important, but it doesn't have to be at the hottest times, plus young children are more vulneranle to the heat, dehydration and sunburn.

Minai · 11/08/2020 18:34

Yanbu. It has been 34-36 where I am for the last few day and my children (20 months & 3) can’t handle being outside in this heat. I take them out first thing in the morning before it heats up or just before bed for a quick play in the garden or in the woods at the back of the house. They have slight cabin fever but it’s just too hot for them outside. Hoping for a big thunderstorm soon!

Kitkat05 · 11/08/2020 18:40

I have a 10 month old and we are staying in..

Kitkat05 · 11/08/2020 18:41

@Minai thunderstorm next week (if you are in London too) I can't wait!

mynameiscalypso · 11/08/2020 18:42

Nope, I agree. We were on holiday last week and I kept DS in between 12 and 3 every day.

bakingdemon · 11/08/2020 18:45

If we do go outside in the afternoon it's just in the garden once it's covered by shade and we have a paddling pool.

Mommabear20 · 11/08/2020 18:47

Take my daughter out with me to walk the dogs in the morning then it's inside for all of us for the rest of the day. The dogs are going mad inside but it's too hot for them too so sucking it up and going mad together 😁

Shayisgreat · 11/08/2020 19:00

I've been going out with my 22 month old until 10.30am at the very latest and then stay in for the rest of the day. I can't cope with the heat and he gets really cranky. Inside is only slightly cooler but the sun is far to strong for him.

TeddyIsaHe · 11/08/2020 19:02

Dd is 3.5 and we’re in for the hottest part of the day. We’ve become quite adept at eating ice creams in our pants with the fan on us!

moonlight1705 · 11/08/2020 19:09

Just picked my 18 month old up from nursery where they were inside most of the day doing water play.

We've just filled the paddling pool quickly and dunked her in it to cool down this evening as there is a lovely shady bit. It has kept her feeling better and not too grouchy before bed.

doadeer · 11/08/2020 19:12

We do the same with 18m old. Out in morning from 8.30am to 11am for some good exercise at the park them home for a sleep. He slept for so so long today! I think it makes them extra tired

Deelish75 · 11/08/2020 19:24

Yanbu. We're all fair skinned in our house so I've always been one for staying in during 11-3pm.
My youngest is now 5. We've stayed home this week. I couldn't imagine going on a day out in this heat. We play out in the garden in the morning then come back in until 3. She seems happy with that although she was asking to go to the park earlier, we've told her the weekend as it's supposed to be cooler. We're in Kent and it's been 32 degrees here, but it's supposed to break tomorrow evening - hoping for a cracking thunderstorm!!

GirlCalledJames · 11/08/2020 19:50

Do what they do in hot countries. Out first thing in the morning and again after dinner before bath.

BertieBotts · 11/08/2020 19:50

Go out in the mornings when it's cooler. That's what we do and we live in a country that tends to be 30s all through the summer.

I try to get home by 12 because it gets hottest in the afternoons here.

OverTheRainbow88 · 11/08/2020 19:53

We’ve been going to a local woods so it’s all shaded and conveniently has a stream running through it Which my boys play in, and a very clever ice cream van man!

OhToBeASeahorse · 11/08/2020 19:53

We are going out but only.really before 10 and after 4. Its mentally hot.

Squaretoe · 11/08/2020 19:54

YANBU. I took my 5 and 3 year olds out this morning 9:30-11:30, then they stayed indoors (apart from a couple of quick dunks in the paddling pool) until 5:30 when we went back out for a final run around to burn off some energy. A few days indoors won’t do any harm at all and is sensible in this heat.

BertieBotts · 11/08/2020 19:55

Also, avoid places with lots of pavement/concrete because this soaks up heat and then radiates it back to you. You need to be in the shade of trees, at a higher altitude, or near water.

user1493413286 · 11/08/2020 19:55

We’ve been doing the same; going out early morning and then in the evening we might go into the garden before bed but it’s too hot to enjoy being outside in the middle of the day

zigaziga · 11/08/2020 19:57

Quite normal I think.

I have two young kids and we’ve barely been out since it got so hot last week. We aren’t even really using the garden, it’s just too hot.

Where are these bloody thunderstorms we’ve been promised?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 11/08/2020 20:00

I’d go out morning and evening but avoid 11am to 3pm.

Lelophants · 11/08/2020 20:01

No way am I going out with my baby. It's dangerous (35 near me today). Heatwaves suck.

UnfinishedSymphon · 11/08/2020 20:02

I don't blame you at all, it's not just the heat it's awfully muggy. We had massive thunderstorms last night and the early hours, thought I'd wake up to a lovely fresh morning but it's been even worse today
