To keep my 18 month old inside during this heat?

Swaddleblanket · 11/08/2020 18:08

I live near London and it’s in the 30s at the minute and has been since last Friday. It feels so hot outside so I take my toddler out in the morning and then for the rest of the day we are (bored) inside.

Even with sun cream it feels crazy hot and I feel like I should keep him out of it. So we have stayed indoors now Fromm 11ish since last Friday.

Should I be taking him out am I over reacting??

YANBU at all!

We also live near London and it got up to 34 here today. DD is almost 3 and much to her frustration we've been sticking to staying indoors. We've only got pavement in our garden and it's absolutely roasting out there. We just stick to letting her go to the swings in the morning and maybe a run around outside just before bed. We're both getting cabin fever though, this heatwave can fuck right off

OverTheRainbow88 · 11/08/2020 20:26

It’s not even crossed my mind to not go out because of the heat... just had a think about where’s best to go! I think I’ve developed a fear of staying home since lockdown and need to be out all the time!!

VinoOlive · 11/08/2020 20:29

I've only been taking my 4 year old out until about 11am, park for example then staying in. It's too hot for me too.

bloodywhitecat · 11/08/2020 20:31

I have a 9 month old and a 16 week old and I am keeping them indoors between the start of their morning naps at around 10am and the end of their afternoon naps, 4.30pm for the 9 month old. At 4.30 me and the 9 month old are going out in the shade of the trees, we have mature trees which give us shade, and playing in some water. We the eat dinner in the shade of the trees too.

RedWine123 · 11/08/2020 21:00

In the same boat as you, OP. We’ve been going to the park early doors. Still suncream and hat. Stay in 11-5. Then we might take a longer walk to the shop in the evening or something similar.

It can be quite boring. During that time he has his nap and a meal so around those we mainly watch TV, read, use the bath as a paddling pool, play with toys, stuff like that. Fingers crossed will start to cool down from Thurs.

copperoliver · 11/08/2020 21:49

I kept mine in and put the pool out in the shade. X

Writerandreader · 11/08/2020 22:02

It's dangerously hot but if u could drive to trees and shade it cld pass the time

needaliferaft · 11/08/2020 22:05

Have a 3 month old and def keeping her in. We are popping out in the buggy now and then very quickly for something to do.

Counting down to the supposed reprieve!

recklessgran · 11/08/2020 22:07

YA definitely NBU . I'm 64 and I'm staying in OP!

needaliferaft · 11/08/2020 22:09

@bloodywhitecat how do you have a 9 month old and a 16 wk old? Is it just me or does that math not work?

Poppyismyfavourite · 11/08/2020 22:29

In a lot of hot places people avoid the sun between 11 &. 3.
Personally (based on taking groups of kids on scout camps!) I'd do something active in the morning to burn off some energy, then quieter indoor activities in the middle of the day (baking, crafts, films, reading etc) then more active stuff again later.

Sailingblue · 11/08/2020 22:30

I’ve kept my 16m old in during the hottest bits of the day and today she was in most of the day really. Yesterday we went out first thing and we did the paddling pool at 4 which worked pretty well. The poor love is covered in heat rash and is a sweaty mess. Her bedroom is currently at 31 degrees with the windows open etc. She is definitely not able to cope well in this weather.

My 4yo on the other hand has needed a forced pause to chill out during the midday sun and relax inside. The heat doesn’t bother her as much (mainly because she could live in the paddling pool if given the chance) and still seems to zoom around when everyone around her is melting and feeling rubbish.

GisAFag · 11/08/2020 22:54

Go out early on the morning for a while even it's just for a little while. Her a bit of fresh air before it gets too hot. The hot weather is meant to end later this week and it be back to 13 degrees or so

MolyHolyGuacamole · 11/08/2020 23:21

I'm 36 and have been sTaying in. YANBU.

She's a Foster carer IIRC

Itisbetter · 11/08/2020 23:35

Nobody goes out in the middle of the day in warmer countries. But go out morning and evening, and if you can shade in a garden will be cooler than inside.

likeafishneedsabike · 11/08/2020 23:40

We have been swimming every day since Friday and are booked to go again tomorrow. Very lucky that the local council pool is open. It’s the only outing I can contemplate, other than a walk in totally wooded areas.

needaliferaft · 12/08/2020 07:43

@BertieBotts cool and a very lovely thing to do 💓

Reluctantcavedweller · 12/08/2020 08:23

YANBU. Small children shouldn't be in the sun for long periods, and certainly not in this heat.

We've covered our garden as much as we can with a gazebo and some rigged up groundsheets so toddler is enjoying playing out there in the shade. Even so, it's too hot, so he spends a lot of time sitting in the paddling pool or on some wet towels I've put down on the patio. Our house is like a furnace inside though, so outside is better for us. If it was cooler inside, we'd be staying in.

Bring on the rain!

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 12/08/2020 08:26

We are also near London and it is hotter in my house by the afternoon than it is outside I think. Stupid house Hmm. It's a mid terrace with a conservatory, which we obviously didn't build and which I'm tempted to level to the ground with my bare hands at the moment Grin.

YANBU, assuming your home is cooler than ours.
