7?

TheQueef · 10/08/2020 20:00

23

Well I'm 87 and I still do it, (since my teeth fell out)

BagOfNerves2020 · 10/08/2020 20:04

Mine is 5, and I'm still doing it.

I read that 7 is the age to stop, as that's when their wind pipe is developed enough to minimise the risk of choking on a grape.

I'm not sure though... I'll probably do it for longer knowing me!

Dorobie · 10/08/2020 20:07

I still do it for my 10yr & 7yrs olds when I’m packing their lunches for school.

But if they’re with me and we just have a packet in the house or out and about then they just have them whole....

... This says more about my confidence in the school mid day staff than the grapes though 🙈

Shinygreenelephant · 10/08/2020 20:13

I went from quarters to halves at about 5, think I stopped cutting them at all around 7 but they still have to sit still when eating them

Pinkflipflop85 · 10/08/2020 20:24

On our school first aid training we were advised to cut them until at least 7 years old.

Wankpuffin · 10/08/2020 20:25

Eldest is nearly 18. I still do it Out of habit (In my defence, youngest is 6).

milkjetmum · 10/08/2020 20:26

Over 5 but as pp said have always insisted they sit down and bite straight away not just hold them in their mouths. But I only remind my 6 yr old if this now, not my 9 yr old.

Bbub · 10/08/2020 20:34

A few years ago I read a boy died after choking on a grape aged 6 so in my head this was always the minimum age before stopping cutting. I have a 6 yr old now, don't know how I will feel when he's 7 Confused

Redraptor · 10/08/2020 20:37

These horror stories I hear of children choking on grapes usually feature 7/8yos. My elder dd is 5 and I cant imagine stopping for a long time, shes very petite. I honestly dont see the harm in cutting them up though, I dont see it as a faff

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 10/08/2020 20:38

I still cut up 10 + 12year olds but I cut mine too. 26 yr old dd objects but I still do it when I can, I'm normally very laid back about stuff but grapes make me uneasy.

Jayaywhynot · 10/08/2020 20:38

54, I still cut up grapes, nearly choked to death on a whole grape when someone made me laugh at work

RIPworkingmums · 10/08/2020 20:39

My oldest is 7 and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Not worth the risk in my opinion - how would you feel if you didn’t cut it and they choked? It’s such a known high risk food item that I wouldn’t take the chance.

ChikiTIKI · 10/08/2020 20:39

My friend knew someone who died eating an orange segment aged 24...

Depends if you can trust them to concentrate when eating I suppose.

bananacone · 10/08/2020 20:39

I still do it for my nearly 9yo. Just habit I guess although he probably just enjoys eating them this way now

IpanemaSunshine · 10/08/2020 20:41

I still cut up my young teens grapes and for me, partly habit but also that ‘what if’ scenario.

bigTillyMint · 10/08/2020 20:41

I never did it Shock

I once had to fish almost a whole tiny box of raisins out of DSs mouth - he was about 3 months old and DD (aged nearly 2) had pushed them in ShockGrin

princesspeppax · 10/08/2020 20:43

My eldest is 5 and I still do it, no plans to stop anytime soon not worth the risk in my opinion considering how long it takes to actually cut them up

VaTeLaverLesMains · 10/08/2020 20:43

I haven't ever cut grapes. When did it become recommended?

mswales · 10/08/2020 20:46

I stopped when my son had all his teeth, maybe about 1 and a half? He was always really good at chewing. I had no idea about this 7 years old thing. Do people do this with any other foods, eg cherry tomatoes?

ImFree2doasiwant · 10/08/2020 20:48

My eldest is 5 and I still do it. He took a whole one today while i was cutting some, popped it in his mouth then wandered off. He ran back in a minute later with it still whole and in his mouth.

Pinkflipflop85 · 10/08/2020 20:50

Having teeth is pretty irrelevant when it comes to grapes and risk.

They are the third most common cause of choking deaths in children.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/08/2020 20:52

At 9 yo DD will carry away a plate of grapes, roll her eyes at me and say, 'I know mum, sit down and bite them properly eurgh'.

Cheeky mare.

nanbread · 10/08/2020 20:53

I don't buy grapes any more. A faff to cut and as far as fruit goes they're pretty high in sugar and not so great on the nutrients compared to berries.
